OK, who watched ?

He said that the NY people think Pioli is definitely going to interview (he said he's "continuing his job" not that he wasn't interested later) with the Giants and that Belichick is thought to be going a year behind him.

It makes some sense as the general feeling seems to be that Belichick is signed through 2007. It may be tricky keeping Coughlin for a year as a lame duck though.

Anyway, sorry to start an new thread on this but it was interesting and didn't sound totally far fetched.

Pioli just made an announcement to the contrary. Saban part deux?

BF i think Pioli just made an anoucement that he turned down the interview.

You mean he's going to interview in a year? Pioli wants to wait for Belichick so that they can go together?

I don't know...I mean, all these Pioli/BB stuff seems to be the NY media being hopeful and throwing names out there, and harping on Pioli and Belichick's pasts with the team. Yet we've seen nothing from either of them that indicate they want to leave, and Pioli doesn't even want to be interviewed.

I think the Giants media can't stand the thought of someone saying no to the Giants job, and they might have to settle for less. They think there must be some ulterior motive on the part of Pioli.

Check the wording. He said he's continuing his job. That doesn't mean forever, even past two weeks from now.

I personally think that Belichick, Pioli and Brady are going to stick it out in New England together.

I don't get all this speculation. I think it is possible that Pioli eventually goes his own way and leaves the nest, but I honestly don't know if that will really hurt Belichick's system as much as we think. Belichick will just have to keep scouting personally, and get another guy in to learn the ropes just like Pioli did.

Unless Kraft gets tired of Belichick's no nonsense style, or unless Belichick gets burnt out, I just don't see a shake-up in the immediate future.

"I am very honored to be granted the opportunity to discuss a potential position with the New York Giants. I have tremendous respect for the Kraft family, the Mara family, the Tisch family and the Giants organization. After careful consideration, and for personal reasons, I am continuing in my current role with the New England Patriots."

I agree. I don't think Pioli is going anywhere for at least another year. He's a guy you take it on a year-by-year basis with. I predict BB is here for 4 more years.

Yes I know. Check the bolded piece. How much wiggle room does that give him ? He could interview tomorrow and have been totally truthful as he's continued his current role already.

If he wanted to interview later, why would he release a statement saying he turned down a chance to interview? He wouldn't have said anything at all.

Wasn't meant to counter your opinion in anyway. Just wanted everyone to see the context. Perhaps he wasn't agreeable to some of the baggage, and wanted to leave the door open. After Saben's tom foolery, I can see your point.

To avoid the distraction. With a front office guy I don't think it would have been much of one but with a game coming up I could see it.

It was just Tanguay trying to stir a turd. And Perrillo, who is a light weight on these show, helped hold the spoon for him.

Nothing more than that.

Hmm, maybe. But this speculation with Pioli happens practically every year, and like you said, he's a FO guy and not the head coach, so I don't think it would be much of a distraction.

I could see Pioli leaving at some point in the future, but I think he's here for next year at least. I think media people are just puzzled as to why he didn't interview, and so are thinking up reasons why that could be, and reading things into his statement that aren't there.

Adam Shefter seems to think the Giants will hire a GM quickly so they can made a decision on Coughlin quickly. If so . . . whew.

Perhaps they feel that they have not accomplished all that they can accomplish. The team is set up for success for at least the next 4 or 5 years. If they think that they can win more championships in that time, and thats a definite possibility, then they can start looking at being the most successful franchise in football history.

When thats done, what kind of payday can he get somewhere?

Then what's with the "after careful considerationa and for personal reasons?" When I used to teach lit. my students would get all p!ssy about having to read on the inferential meaning level. What I asked them to do couldn't hold a candle to the over analysing I see on this board, or any other sports board for that matter.

New rumor I just started because, well, it seemed fitting to start some more baseless rumors: Scott Pioli is waiting for Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft to retire and relinquish his seat to President Jonathan Kraft. This will create an opening for the current Vice-President to move up ladder within a franchise believed to be worth over a billion dollars. Sources close to my cat believe Piol is watching this opportunity like it's a small rodent's front door in the baseboard. Neither Pioli or the Krafts could be reached for comment, but League sources confirmed Pioli is indeed Vice-President for Player Personnel and an up and coming executive within the NFL.
