The defensive front 7 played reasonably well in the last half of 2010, among the leaders in points allowed.
===================
The 2011 version looking forward is better than 2010.
IN: Carter, Anderson, Ellis
OUT: Banta-Cain, Moore, Cohen
====================
I would also note that Love is playing very well indeed.
=====================
As of a few days ago, we were the favorite to win the division and the conference. The defensive front seven is NOT the issue. The primary issue is turnovers, by the offense and special teams.

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

right now, I'll take the 2010 version....why?

because they could at least line up in the 3-4

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

The front seven did pressure Manning 21 times on Sunday. They look to be turning the corner. Granted without Spikes for a bit, that might change. Hopefully Fletcher will be back soon.

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

Im not so in to Love to be honest. He gets zero push in pass rush and doesnt get enough run stoppage either. I was so into this 4-3 but now I just long for a return to 3-4 and start dreaming about a rush LB in the draft.

We all know that isnt happening. But Santa, cant we atleast get a 1st rounder ILB ?

you can get 'em in teh 2nd round

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

???
I'm fine with Mayo and Spikes, and Fletcher, and with Guyton as our #4.
============================================

You must mean a pass-rushing OLB younger than Carter who is obviously just fine.

except that carter is not an OLB......

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

Wilfork was much better when he was poking opponents in the eyes.

I tend to put pass rushing DE's and OLB's in the same category.

We do need an additional pass-rushing OLB, although if we stay in the 4-3, that player may be Mayo.

what if we bring back Willie McGinest?

except that they're different.......carter does not drop into coverage, and carter is a 3 down player

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

I agree.

BTW, do you agree that our current front seven is better than the 2010 front seven?

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

no.......mostly because if it was, they would be playing the 3-4

I have never seen such a mad scramble to try to mask weaknesses......I think the 2011 front 7 would have been better than the 2010 if they had kept the same guys and scheme......they were very young last year and blowing the whole thing up the way they did this year reeks of rick pitino impatience

also, our LB group is simply too slow to be effective in the 4-3......you now only have 3 guys who can cover, and they need to be able to cover more space.....I would start mark anderson since he has actually dropped into coverage fairly effectively, and have carter be more situational on obvious passing downs....he can do jarvis greens old job

I would force everything back to a 3-4.....we're not getting the pass rush we need anyway.....at least this way, we can have one more guy in coverage

So, we should have kept Banta-Cain, Cohen, and Moore instead of Carter, Ellis and Anderson?

BTW, some of the youngsters from 2010 were injured: Deaderick and Brace. They are now back.

I would have replaced banta cain with brooks reed instead of wasting a very good pick on dowling.......I would have also drafted muhammad wilkerson instead of trading the pick to NO.....

not sure how much better they defense would have been early because of even more youth, but I see a much better picture that way.....i would have then spent the ellis money on a secondary upgrade via FA

Where is the option "None of the above?"

Both groups are terrible

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

The issue in free agency was not money. If Belichick wanted to spend $6M a year, he had it available for an additional defensive back. Obviously, he should have brought in someone if he was so unhappy with Meriweather and Sanders (and Butler and Wilhite). In any case, the money was there.

Yes, Belichick overpaid for Ellis, but this is simply 100% hindsight. Belichick underpaid for Carter. Belichick focused on 2011. The money was there for Carter AND Ellis and even two more players at their salaries.

You wouldn't have drafted a corner. OK. I disagree. We needed a corner to replace Bodden in 2012. HOWEVER, I also liked Brooks Reed at the time.

And yes, Belichick each year has traded into the future. Each year, we still have plenty of picks. I think it reasonable to trade one forward. I, for one, was glad to see us drafting in the middle of the first round and choosing between a defensive player and an OT. Many would have chosen Wilkerson instead.

So, in the end, the draft is part of the offseason. Belichick chose to meet the defensive front seven needs in free agency. Let's focus on 2011. I's rather have Carter, Anderson and Ellis than Brooks and Wilkerson. And I still have the pick and the young corner for 2012.

teigh

Monumental blasphomy like turnover importance recognition will invite at minimum tar and feathers from this mob.

Best to tread softly.

Is your house protected?

Re: Defensive Front Seven Better Than 2011

Carter, Anderson and Ellis are terrible?

They are terrible additions to our 2010 defensive front seven of Deaderick, Wilfork, Warren, Love, Brace, Ninkovich and Cunningham??????

As I recall, last year bunch was 4th in points allowed for the last 3/4 of the year.

Your ability to overate the front seven is noted. Carry on....
