Specifically referring to the post-SB42 era, has there been too much personnel turnover on the defense?

I heard they cut him to open a spot up for Moss.

We needed more defensive turnover. The issue has been talent level.

Another freaking dumbazzed poll ...

I'm sure belichick will be checking it to see if he made the right move.

Well, there's too much turnover because the Pats can't sign/draft/acquire talented players, don't you think?

Who the hell gave this silly thread five stars?

A good example is safety. The issue is talent. Belichick thought that Barrett and Brown are better choices that Meriweather and Sanders. Belichick thought that he could bring a special teamer for the #4 safety spot (Ihedigbo was a success).

I believe that Belichick was wrong both is his talent assessment and his timing. Sanders should still be one of our five safeties while Belichick developed Barrett and Brown.

The issue isn't inherently turnover. It's that guys are being jettisoned without anyone who can replace them on the roster. Look at the safeties this year: I don't think anyone had a problem with cutting Sanders or Meriweather in of itself, but a lot of us had a problem with cutting both of them and replacing them with Barrett, Brown, and Ihedigbo.

I agree. I think Sanders should have stayed. Honestly, I would've been fine with either Sanders or Meriweather. To release them both was strange.

I'm pretty sure that BB knows he's made a lot of bad moves, and I'm sure that he's still fine with some of the crap moves he's made. The question I have is whether or not he knows WHY they were bad moves, and why people think that moves he'd still defend were garbage moves.

This! And that the people on the roster in the first place aren't that good.

Damn - I knew I shouldn't have invested in a few thousand Haynesworth jerseys

Well, hopefully my investment in pumpkin futures is doing ok. As of the end of October the stock was sky high - I figured I'd just let it ride another week and then sell.

Yup. Belichick seems to have no problem admitting in hindsight when he makes a mistake. Other coaches let pride and ego stop them from cutting a player.

My guess is his Belichickian response would be that he made his decisions based on the best information he had at the time - sometimes that information is incomplete or inaccurate.

Belichick can't second-guess himself and neither can we - though everything is always clearer in hindsight.

One also has to appreciate the nature of free agency in normal years - you don't always get the players that you want - even if you're name is Belichick.

This year in particular, with free agency and the draft upside down and backwards, and with so little time prior to the season, it's not a huge surprise to see a messy NFL season in every definition of the term.

This is where I'm hoping you're wrong. Belichick needs to do precisely what you're saying he can't. He needs to start second-guessing himself. Every personnel move on the defense needs to be second guessed and third guessed until he starts getting it right again.

Or, to put it another way, he needs to "self-scout" his GMing, because you, me, a drunken monkey and a dartboard could all do a better job of bringing in defensive personnel right now.

I'll address the bolded if I may. BB the coach seems to be doing an OK job, BB the GM does not seem to be doing an OK job right now. Unless there is a master plan at play, I really cannot see what's going on (or a logical thought process with the composition of the defense in particular).

When BB the GM started to rebuild the defense in 2008, did anyone here think by mid-season 2011, it would be comprised mostly of JAGs and projects, with starters getting tossed out the door on a regular basis?

I didn't.

I didn't necessarily expect a top-10 defense, but by 2011, I felt certain a solid core of about 50-75% of the defensive starters would be in place for a 3-5 year run. We're nowhere near that.

BB said he wishes he had fewer 'yes men', he wanted someone to constructively and intelligently question his decisions and at the same time present an alternative plan. He gave a good interview awhile ago, maybe around the time it had come out how tough it was for coaches and players to question his decisions, etc. I forget exactly how he worded it but BB hasn't gotten to where he is by not knowing how to do a self-assessment plus with him I'm sure it's also a matter of trusting the wisdom of the one who's questioning him. I wish he'd get another RAC.

Just you guys wait till it all comes together. This has been preordained from Heaven above, I says!
