How well do the Chargers typically do with covering tight ends? I don't recall them being exceptionally good or bad at it, but if that's a weakness the Pat will exploit the hell out of it. The Chargers' CBs match up well against our WRs, though, so I'm definitely interested to see how this will go.

Defensively, I have no idea what we're going to do with Gates. The Pats get exploited by good tight ends, and Gates is more than just a good tight end. Also worried about Vincent Jackson, since Dowling matches up well with him physically (but is a rookie) and McCourty seems to struggle a bit with bigger WRs (who doesn't?)

We have a first-year starter (Donald Butler) at one ILB spot and Takeo Spikes at the other. Butler is unproven covering tight ends. He was a 3rd round pick in '10 but missed the season with a knee injury. He has talent and has looked good so far, but the Vikes didn't spread out our defense so it's impossible to say at this point. Historically I'd say we're above average but not great at handling good receiving tight ends. They don't generally dominate against us but they still make plays here and there.

Jackson may have a big game next week simply because he was so quiet last week, and Coryell offenses like to spread defenses with the deep ball. Rivers showed some uncharacteristic patience against the Vikings who were manning up and playing press on our wideouts, and then coming with heavy blitzes. The throws to the flats were there all game long, and that's what PR went to. That bodes well for our future games against teams like the Raiders, who have always given us problems with exactly that tactic.

If there's a weakness in your secondary I guarantee Rivers will attack it at some point, just like I'm sure Brady will test out our new ILB and make a few thrusts into our deep secondary to see how Bob Sanders has adapted to the 3-4.

I'm not confident our defense will be able to control your offense. I see some possibilities with the matchup of Garay vs. your backup center and Shaun Phillips vs. the rookie in pass protection. If they can collapse the pocket we may be able to give Brady more problems than he had last night and stop a couple more drives. But all-in-all, if we win I think it will be in similar fashion to how we beat the Colts with Manning... understand that he will get his yards, play a stingy bend-but-don't break and take advantage of every opportunity to get turnovers, and score a lot of points. All-in-all though, I think the key for both defenses will be pass pressure. (So watch the two teams combine for 450 rushing yards.)

I don't like this matchup for the Bolts at this time of the season, on the road. I know Belichik will have some **** up his sleeve for us. I just hope Norvell will be creative as well.

i always liked bodden

i am hoping sd tries to test the cbs deep early and often, just because the early run run is just played out, we need to put on a show and there's no way in hell the vikes were going to give us any time at all

anyway, i think this game is a lot more important for sd than NE, sd really needs to get over this slow start crap, i just hope they play like it's a very important game, i know NE will be.

Why would you have to hope for them to play like it's an important game? EVERY game in the NFL is important outside of preseason. You don't just turn it on and off like a switch.

The Chargers have always had talent, but they've never shown the mental toughness and discipline to become an elite team. How many wins have the Chargers turned into losses because of boneheaded plays or mental errors? SD might be able to get away with them against lesser teams, but you can't make mental errors and expect to get away with it against a team like New England. Do you agree with that last statement?

Also, give us your realistic prediction of the score for this game.

Hey, HEY, before some people get carried away.... I can't remember when the Dolts didn't give the Pats a tough game. In the end they LOSE, but they still play tough.

Well that's when they still had Peyton Manning. Without Manning, I'm afraid the Colts would get slaughtered by the Pats. I mean how did they fare against the Texans?

Thanks for sharing your insights. It's greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering why you'd think the edge is in rushing because your LB's are usually good in run stopping. We ran very poorly against you last year (2.4 YPC or something). Also I don't think the Chargers are going to repeat those silly mental errors (letting go of the ball without contact, lateral pass fumble, etc).

because my chargers, every year since i've been following them, often lack discipline and make some pretty ******ed mistakes

maybe it really is a san diego thing......

like it's in the water or something

they're just stupid as hell sometimes

i'm hoping sunday isn't one of those times

as for sd always playing NE tough, not always, i remember a week 2 2007 absolute ass kicking at the hands of NE in NE, after just having barely beat an nfc north team at home in week 1

hoping that history doesn't repeat itself, but if it does, at least we were able to get to the playoffs and afccg that season, so ....a repeat of 07's week 2 wouldn't be the be all end all of our season

and yes of course i agree you can't make mistakes vs a team like NE and hope to compete

that's basic common sense, BB is a god among coaches

my prediction for the score is sd 24, ne 20

but i won't be surprised if we lose, especially after what i saw in week 1 with us.

hopefully sanders is some kind of insightful difference maker for our pass defense (even though he's a run D guy) vs brady

at least he's got that kind of experience to tap into

wow i thought everyone universally liked sd's unis lol

I think Rivers may get hit quite frequently in the pocket this Sunday...just a hunch

that's probably the plan for sd's dline and lbs too, to hit brady early and often

Its Norv Turner that scares me :bricks:

he scares dungy, bb not so much

i love norv though

none of sd's losses under norv are any worse than anything i saw under coryell ross marty or any other chargers head coach in the sb era

matthews1733 is taking a time out on this thread. No sense responding to him because he won't be able to reply.

Maybe on another thread he will be more willing to stop with the name calling and acting like a troll. Or, it will be short week her on patsfans for him.

sigh......

There used to be a time on this board we were able to take these guys who walked on with a chip on their shoulder / coming from a JI type board mentatlity WHO WERENT TOO OVER THE TOP and postively reinforce them into quality interactive posters. Guys who brought info and counterpoints to the table.

Now this is what gets you in TIME OUT on the board?
Am I talking to a 5 years old.
A remarkable record of personal insult. ohhh he called me a 5 year old. :bricks:

Ok sure he is a troll who wants to throw out 'spy-gate' (aka Commish-Jets-gate').

BUT Unless there is a trail of posts that you already removed for content that I am not seeing - I DON"T GET WHY YOU SUSPENDED THIS IDIOT SO QUICK.

I don't think any of Norv's losses in SD have matched that playoff lost to the Pats where you guys were leading with a couple of minutes to go, and intercepted Brady basically ending the game, only to have the player try to return the ball, and then fumbled the ball, leading to a Patriots victory on your home turf, causing LaDamian to cry like a little girl and throwing a fit.

That HAD to be one of the worst losses in NFL history. The greatness of Troy Brown on full display.

The powder blues may be the best unis in American sports history.

Now there's an example of seeking out the positives amidst decades of disappointment... I'll take great guys to work for who never won one for $100 Alex...
