Wednesday Afternoon Patriots Notes: Vollmer the Only Player Absent, Miami Worried About Loud Boston Fans, and More
By: Ian Logue

Here are some interesting news and notes for Wednesday afternoon....

Re: 9/7 practices: All but vollmer!

We have to deal with Cameron Wake. If Solder's in there, Dolphins would be smart to swing Wake where Solder is lined up on obvious passing downs. I think it be best that Vollmer was completely healthy for this game.

Even Vollmer had a little trouble with Wake last year (at least in the Monday night game). Heck, most teams had trouble with him. By one measure Wake was the top 3-4 OLB in the NFL last year:

NFL Forum :: - QB Disruptions from leading NFL Pass Rushers
Top 5 3-4 OLBs
1. Cameron Wake - 14.0 sacks, 15 QB hits, 38 QB hurries - 67 QB disruptions
2. Tamba Hali - 14.5 sacks, 12 QB hits, 37 QB hurries - 63.5 QB disruptions
3. DeMarcus Ware - 15.5 sacks, 8 QB hits, 39 QB hurries - 62.5 QB disruptions
4. Terrell Suggs - 11.0 sacks, 12 QB hits, 38 QB hurries - 61 QB Disruptions
5. James Harrison - 10.5 sacks, 16 QB hits, 31 QB hurries - 57.5 QB Disruptions

Re: 9/7 practices: All but vollmer!

he probably tweaked something or is sore.

I am not worried. The guy doesn't need work. He better effing play.

any news? I think it is a day off. Has he missed a bunch lately?

I would guess that if Solder ends up starting on Monday, he'll be getting help from one of the Gronks on most plays. At LEAST a chip by Rob on his way out to a route.

Obviously prefer Vollmer in there, but I feel we can absorb this hit should it come for a game.

Is Brady's shoulder okay?

It might take more than just a chip with Cameron Wake coming around the corner. (see above).

If I am not mistaken, Vollmer missed the last pre season game, and every practice this week. It would be unusual for him to go ahead and start on Monday given that. When the injury report comes out we should know more.

He's a talented player no doubt, but Brady doesn't hold onto the ball very long. If a chip gives him an extra half second that might be all he needs. And of course there will be plays where Gronk stays in to block the whole play... hence my use of the words "at least" a chip. Can't just keep Gronk in to block every play, you'd be unnecessarily removing a weapon from the offense.

It's true; the Pats rarely play a guy who doesn't practice the week before the game. However, they also never go into a game with only two tackles so you'd think that Vollmer can play, even if he can't play at 100%.

I hope Solder is as successful as Vollmer was as a rookie, or more so.

There have been some OT's cut that might be of interest, but it's hard to see us getting one - since they can't likely help this week, and we'll have to pay them for the year - and we'll have to cut an existing player to do it. The only exception is if Vollmer is hurt for some period of time - and still we'd go with Solder until the contract doesn't have to be guaranteed.

Anxious to see if Vollmer practices today. You'd think they were pretty confident Vollmer would be able to play, or they probably would have kept a 4th tackle on the roster. I can't imagine them going into the game without a backup tackle. If Vollmer can't play, my guess is they'd probably promote Thomas Welch from the PS because of his familiarity with the system having been with them last year in camp. Unless there is another Gronkowski out there. We are the NE Patriots - give us your tired and poor Gronkowskis yearning to be free.

Re: 9/7 practices: All but vollmer!

I know, doesn't "bunged up" mean constipated?

"Artificially constipated," would be more accurate, and while it is a common condition amongst players on the Jets this (if accurate) is the first report I have heard of it happening to a Patriot.

Vollmer is healthy, just given the day off to celebrate the anniversary of the invasion of Poland.

Oh wait, I can think of a couple reasons that is not going to go well...

I'd pay money to see you make that comment to the Gronkowski brothers.

Re: 9/7 practices: All but vollmer!

Yes, I'm part Polish and I'm offended.

Re: 9/7 practices: All but vollmer!

I'm pretty concerned. It's not just the drop-off from Vollmer to a rookie playing a different side like Solder would be, but also Waters playing his first game for us as well. That right side of the line is bound to have a few communication issues even with Vollmer, but with two new parts, yikes.
