Pats claim linebacker AJ Edds

Because they are terrible at personnel decisions.

Don't forget, this is the team that decided to let a promising WR go to a division rival, only to watch him become the most prolific pass catcher in the NFL over that 4 year span. This also a team that "is comfortable" starting the season with Chad Henne as their starting QB. Using personnel effectively is not something they are particularly good at.

It might be a simple as that.

Exactly--there's a reason certain organizations consistently perform poorly.

I think this could actually turn out to be an excellent pick-up.

Funny, my first name is Brian, and people have reversed the vowels and misspelled it brain many times. But, I've never seen the mistake made the other way - until now.

Spell check error, or simple typo. I generally don't read back before hitting send. Bad habit I know..... Get used to it

This news can't make Gary Guyton very happy. If Edds can come close to Guyton's coverage skills, he has the reputation for better instincts and play-reading ability.

Guyton isn't that bad, just not very physical, although a certain jack bauer thinks he is.

I like AJ Edds, liked him coming out of Iowa....it would be funny if they cut Gronkowski and stop the cirlcle jerk over there cold. Ha ha.:rocker:

Re: Pats claim AJ Edds

Great link. Sounds like quite the guy - next Bruschi, probably. I wonder about his speed after an ACL. Reminds me of Brandon Tate.

There's a big difference between Bruschi and Brandon Tate. One became a cornerstone of our superbowl defenses. Another got cut after accomplishing nothing. Which one is it?

Edds is certainly an interesting pickup. The Pats could use a good coverage linebacker who can pickup the slot receiver/TE/RB. If he excels in special teams, that's even better because it helps justify the roster spot.

Guyton's main weakness is that he can look lost on open field tackles. He's not as reliable a stopper as you'd like in those situations. Guyton's speed is an asset, but I'd rather go with the guy who can make the reliable tackle in that situation to prevent the big gain and/or 3rd down conversion. Hopefully Edds can be that guy. Upside I think would be Roman Phifer whom we've never truly replaced.

FWIW this Miami sports columnist sounds like a PatsFans poster on this move:

Mike Berardino (@MikeBerardino) on Twitter
Watch the Patriots turn Edds into the next Vrabel. Really surprised Fins cut him.

Fan reaction in Miami seems to be universally pissed at losing Edds, none of the usual "Ha, they're picking up our table scraps!" talk.

Tarp to IR for Edds's place on the roster?

How many more moves do the Pats need to make before people realize Tarp isn't going to IR?

No..... Looks like Butler cut for Edds and Warren cut for Gronk 2.0. I have no earthly idea why they seem so resistant to moving Tarp (to IR or cut), while letting someone like Warren go.

I hope to get Warren back at some point.

Here's the 11 page thread on Finheaven about the Patriots signing Edds, for those interested: Edds is a Patriot

Thanks.

My guess (or hope) is that Tarp is keeping the seat warm for Cannon.

Why is everybody so desperate to cut him, anyway? Tarp is a guided missile on special teams, and a good blitzer with potential as a situational LB/S tweener.

I agree. I thought of Phifer when reading about this guy. Phifer was a terrifically versatile linebacker for the Patriots. Excellent coverage.

The Patriots coverage over the middle last year was horrible - and a big part of the last-in-third-down issue. On third down, they could not cover over the middle. Edds sounds like someone that can provide this.

Of course, it could require a lot of substitutions. Teams that run a no huddle can keep Haynesworth on the field too long, and prevent the Patriots from rotating guys like Guyton and Edds in.

Well, if Dolphin fans hate that we got him. Must be a good move.

How's this from finheaven:

You should see what they're saying in the comments section of the game preview on NFL.com. One guy predicted 400+ yards and 4 TD's from Chad Henne. A Pats fan then responded by asking him to stop playing Madden on Easy.

Bill Polian killed-off the Roman Phifer's of this world......never to return, sadly:bricks:

My favorite post on Finheaven was the one that said the Dolphins have the edge at RB because Bush > Woodhead and Thomas > BJGE.

Yeah, it's pretty funny looking at other teams' boards...when you see really aggressive homerism, makes you watch for it a little in your own posts.
