Former Patriot Ellis Hobbs Pursuing Film Interests
By: Ian Logue

A lot of news on some older Patriots today as the team heads off to Detroit, and I came across another interesting article this afternoon in ESPN's Page 2 on former Patriots defensive back Ellis Hobbs, who has apparently taken on a new interest during his...

I'll always like Ellis Hobbs. Wasn't that talented but he tried his best.

Yet again Hobbs is too small for that career

He wore a Dixie cup.

Just play a loop of his coverage on the final TD of SB42 and he's suddenly created the ultimate horror masterpiece.

This is the sort of high-risk investment that runs through guys' funds.

I hope he beats the odds.

Or maybe a remake of Lost In Space?

Ellis is starring in a new theatrical version of The Good,The Bad and The Ugly

The Good - 2007 AFC Champions starting cornerback
The Bad - Cornerback who had pass sail over his head into the arms of Burress
&
The Ugly - 18-1

He's a fool if he didn't pay for an investment insurance policy. The premiums can be high, but if you lose your shirt and the venture fails, you are only out the policy costs. If the venture succeeds, it's a small price to pay compared to your returns.

I wish him the best regardless of the unkind words that will be spoken about him for years to come on this and other fora.

IIRC correctly, Hobbs was playing with a pulled hamstring and on that play the Patriots for some reason blitzed the safety leaving a hobbled hobbs one on one with Burress. I'd take a guy like Hobbs who always gave full effort over a gambling non tackling prima donna like Samuel any day.

Tangentially related story: back when I worked in private investment, a film funding startup approached my film looking for capital. Basically, instead of having a couple of uber-rich folks throw millions at the film, it would get a bunch of people to pool smaller amounts (five figures) together for a hopefully similar total. Fractional investment, etc. etc. By far, dentists were their biggest clients--read into that what you will--but they did mention that a lot of athletes showed interest as well, so I guess this sort of thing is fairly common. Anyways, I hope Hobbs gets out of the film industry before it bankrupts him; movies are absolutely terrible investments.

I don't think any serious Pats fans really blame Hobbs for that play. Dude did all he could but it was impossible to defend given the way the play broke down and the mismatch. **** happens, and **** REALLY happened right then and there. He did his best, what more can you say?

Movies are not "absolutely terrible investments."

Not doing your homework prior to investing is "absolutely terrible."

Huh???

In a venture where the most likely outcome is that you lose your money, such a policy would cost nearly as much as the original investment.

Emphasis mine ... yikes, the line breaks didn't hold up.

There's no business like show business Like no business I know Everything about it is appealing Everything the traffic will allow Nowhere could you get that happy feeling When you are stealing That extra bow There's no people like show people They smile when they are low Yesterday they told you you would not go far That night you open and there you are Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star Let's go on with the show The cowboys, the wrestlers, the tumblers, the clowns The roustabouts that move the show at dawn The music, the spotlight, the people, the towns Your baggage with the labels pasted on The sawdust and the horses and the smell The towel you've taken from the last hotel There's no business like show business Like no business I know You get word before the show has started That your favorite uncle died at dawn Top of that, your ma and pa have parted You're broken-hearted But you go on There's no people like show people They don't run out of dough Angels come from everywhere with lots of jack And when you lose it there's no attack Where could you get money that you don't give back? Let's go on with the show The costumes, the scenery, the make-up, the props The audience that lifts you when you're down The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops The sheriff who escorts you out of town The op'ning when your heart beats like a drum The closing when the customers won't come There's no business like show business Like no business I know Everything about it is appealing Everything the traffic will allow Nowhere could you get that happy feeling When you are stealing That extra bow There's no people like show people They smile when they are low Even with a turkey that you know will fold You may be stranded out in the cold Still you wouldn't 'change for a sack of gold Let's go on with the show Let's go on with the show

If you say so. Good luck investing in movies, then, you're certainly going to need it.

By all accounts that I know of, the psychic benefits of fractionally investing in movies (being part of 'the scene') are the driving force behind the investments. On a risk-reward basis, they don't make much sense.
