Grid's 2011 Opening Day Lineup: Version 1.0!!

As a longtime Herd fan, it pains me to say it, but I don't think Lee Smith makes the 53 unless he can long snap.

Love it. Love that you kept O-lineman Austin.
BUT... I think we need to lose a LB or WR to make room for... LeVoir.
He's an animal, and needs to be here.

Someone forward this thread to Chris Berman. He may need some of these nick-names some day soon.

How often will versions appear? Or when should we expect 2.0? or even 1.71 :)

You mean Mark LeVoir who was only even activated for 7 games last year as injury insurance. Sorry his spot is going to Nate Solder.

I honestly think they only keep 3 OT this year on the opening 53. They only kept 3 in 2009 (Light, Kazcur, Vollmer). Last year they really only had 3 active OT's in Light, Vollmer and LeVoir. Steve Maneri was claimed off waivers and had to be on the roster a few weeks before going to the PS. Kazcur was kept despite his back injury in hopes of maybe playing LG in place of Mankins but he never saw the field and ended up on IR.

So my prediction is Light, Vollmer and Solder as the 3 OT with Maneri heading back to the PS as injury insurance and another year of seasoning until he can replace Light in 2012.

Solder King isn't gonna like it if his binky Lee Smith gets waived......

Light is old, and possibly injury prone. Solder is a rookie, and by some accounts, a semi-project. 3 tackles is NOT enough, especially when you look at our pass protection issues late in the year. LeVoir did an excellent job filling in last year. Given a choice between Levoir or fletcher or Tate, it's a no brainer for me. just my take.

The Following was Greatly Assisted by the Wise Words + Guidance of The Immortal Brother Mayo

Just one man's opinion ...

Orhnberger over Austin
Levoir is kept with Cannon to PUP, should Cannon practice before the season starts then LeVoir would get cut. Need Orhberger as backup OC
Yeatman and Smith have quite a battle thats going down to the wire ... I think the Pats waive both hoping to get one to the PS. Manieri and Solder can be the third TE since both have played TE already.
Add Morris as a FB/RB and ST performer
Trade Tate since KO returns are no longer as valuable under the new KO rule. Keep Edelman and Slater (ST) who led the ST in tackles, and can play S in a pinch
Keep White (ST) who had two tackles last week against JAX
Cut Wilhite
Keep Love over Weston
Not sure Meriweather is going to be on the final 53.

Would like to see Barrett on the field to evaluate. His size intrigues me.

You'd keep Levoir at the expense of Fletcher? Fletcher's not getting cut. I do agree with keeping 4 tackles but I'd keep Maneri as the 4th.

Interesting possibility!!! Has Smith done any Long Snapping in practice? Katula hasn't exactly covered himself in glory!

I have'nt seen enough of Maneri, but 4 tackles is the way to go.
I agree with mark regarding the TE's.

Another great effort OTG, but I think the the 1.0 designation is an indicator that you have a long way to go before this 53 is a finished product. One thing we can agree on is that there are going to be some good football players who AREN'T going to make this team. Here are a couple of comments and suggestions for when you give us 2.0 this weekend.

1. Giving Yeatman a roster spot. I know he's a binky. I first saw his name in your mock draft that netted us 20 players ;). BOTH he and Smith will NOT make this roster, its one or the other, with Yeatman the more likely candidate to make it to the PS. What you don't seem to get is that Gronk is a better blocker than BOTH these guys right now. He's also the best receiver. Don't forget that we lose a roster spot with the addition of the 3rd QB. With the major log jams on the DL, WR, and RB, we are NOT going to go into the year with 4 TEs. Its just too much of a luxury.

2. Edelman is NOT going to be cut, hard or not. Just for his punt return value alone, he's a lock to make the team. HE is also the future slot receiver when the Pats let Welker go the proverbial "year too early". Remember this will be Edelman's 3rd year at the position. It wasn['t until Welker's 4th season that he started to get on people's radar. And not until his 5th that he blossomed. Edelman is right on track.

3. I think its a very original concept you make by suggesting the Pats won't keep one or more special teams specialists, like White and Slater. I doubt it happens by I appreciate the "off the grid" thinking.

4, DL is where I have the most problems. Love, Weston, Pryor, and Richards have been reported to have ALL impressed at one time or another this camp. Brace and Deadrick have BOTH shown flashes in real games last season. Those are 6 young guys who ALL have shown promise. Several of them are NOT going to make this roster. I think Haynesworth has shown in his brief appearance that he IS the real deal. So assuming in whatever purgatory he's in right now, he is working diligently to get out, his spot is a lock. Anderson showed will last scrimmage. Most people think Carter will be impactful, and Ellis will be an excellent Rotational guy. And lets not forget the guy who had 5.5 sacks in 7 games from an interior DL position

How many are you going to keep and who?. Are you willing to jettison one of your young DLmen so Will Yeatman gets a roster spot? At this point I couldn't even VENTURE a guess. Especially without knowing the true status of Brace and Deadrick

5. I see Ras as a CB. I see Barret, if healthy making the roster. I think Sanders is at more of risk of losing his job than Merriweather. Though I expect both to be here. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilhite gone and some CB replace him off the waiver wire or FA.

Of course take this all with a grain of salt.....JMHO

Initial thoughts: We can't afford to keep 4 TEs, Edelman's PR ability is more valuable than Tate's KR ability with the new rules, Slater I think is too valuable to cut and Hoyer will be here for a year until we are comfortable with Mallet as a backup, THEN he'll be trade bait.

......or a grain of saltpeter,PFK......what my friend,OTG has done is produce a 1.0 ver of a 53 man roster....It does no good to dissect it,using a bunch of "if's" and "maybes"......get off the tentatives and get to the positives. That's how you debate OTG's projected roster, imho.

So...if edelperson stays....who goes?.....Is it yeatman, smith or does alge return?

Pick 7 DL.....with Brace on PUP.......don't just lump them together in a potential mass.

I think White is a lock and Slater stays......I'm putting Tate and Faulk on Pup.....see it's easy, try it.:rocker:

Ugh.

You're a very enjoyable writer most of the time, Brother Ken, but your repeated use of the Imperative ~ "X will NOT be cut" ~ is unworthy of you: It comes across as rude, arrogant, and ignorant. And unless you're secretly Coach Bill's BOSS, you're full of something brown and squishy.

And please do a little research before spouting rude and foolishly arrogant lines like "What you don't seem to get is that Gronk is a better blocker than BOTH these guys right now." Clearly, I do. But admiring Gronk's blocking hardly precludes my admiration of that of the other guys...or their potentially immense value to this team in multiple Tight End Sets.

Evidently the "JMHO" in your last line was the edit. ;)

Hah!! Thanks for asking, Bro. :D

I'm gonna try to crank out updates a few days after each of the 4 Prep Games.

Is it my turn to say that if a player has practiced he can't be put on PUP?

Very nice stuff. I'm all for strong opinions and you won't be surprised not everyone goes along with them. (Tate over Edelman? Not in my book. No ST-only guys. This is Bill Belichick, you know!)

I don't think that BB will cut bait on all of the young defensive linemen he brought in over the last couple of years but keeping Love, Pryor and Weston only is a bold, bold move. I'd like to know more of your thinking.

Lee Smith was the backup longsnapper at MU, for what that's worth. I have been told by a former college longsnapper that NFL teams want longsnappers who run under a 4.8 or under (if I remember correctly) for coverage purposes. Smith does not meet that criteria, so it might be a stretch to envision him in that role.
