Should the Patriots trade Welker?

I didnt answer the poll because it doesnt give a VALUE to him. He certainly has value, and value is certainly tradeable. Positives?? He has been so productive, he has proven to come back from injury and his value will never be as high as it is right now. He doesnt play the same position as Ocho, his name has no meaning in this thread. There are plenty of BB coaches out there that want to use the same system but dont have such a player so again...value to others. But the most important thing about trades is replacement value. IF, big IF, BB sees the needed improvement of other young WRs on the roster(multiple) it lessens Welker's value in the system. Next, we already have to come up with a roster spot for the 3rd QB so do you think we will keep MORE WRs than last season and find 2(!!)other spots to cut?? NOPE! If say our 6th best WR is Edleman, and say Tate or Price is "ready" to be a #2(Branch can play the slot).....you have to ask is Welker for 1 year(!!!) worth a 2nd,and a 3rd-4th(my value-more than a 2nd less than a first) AND Edleman(who will be cut)?? I'm certain if everyone read THIS as the trade the yahoos would be a bit more even handed.

His value might never be higher than it is now...that's true but look at our wide receivers ffs.

Edelman- inconsistent, shown a few flashes, can't get onto the field.
Tate - nothing impressive about him last year.
Branch- getting older and injury prone.
Ocho- getting older and hasn't proven anything in NE
Price- couldn't see the field.

I see an immediate drop in produciton from our WRs without Welker. And Welker is Tom Brady's safety blanket...i can't stress the importance of this enough. Plus he is a favourite of mine...i want to see him win a ring and end his career here.

Tom Brady needs a safety blanket now?

I don't think he should necessarily be traded, nor do I think he will. I don't want to see him resigned though, unless its cheap money and short years. He'll be 32 before he starts his next contract, and thats not an age you give big money to guys at.

You agree on value, thats easy. Did Tate/Edleman have sophomore slumps? Its totally possible that whats going on in camp and practice going back to last year simply didnt translate to statistics....adding to our #1 offense last year would have been difficult for any young reciever I think you will agree. More over, the TEs stepped in and up last year which could happen again....and they could suffer the same sophomore slump and regress. Time will tell. With the multitude of options eliminating 1 wont affect Brady. Lets not forget the goulish injuries, this position has been relatively healthy the last few years save Welker's injury. We have 6 WRs most would keep but if we HAVE to cut down to 5 doesnt it make sense to get VALUE in return(TRADE) rather than cutting a player that will be playing in the league for someone else this year??

<<<<<<<<< Still in shock this is going on

4. A sensible loyal fan, that sees the big picture and not just fantasy fooball stats for one player. They likely realize that having Chad Johnson, Branch and 2 stud TEs is going to take receptions away from Welker.

Its on Edelman. If he shows hes ready, I believe Welker will be dealt.

The same poll could have been made for Milloy and Maroney prior to their last seasons and the so called "Loyal fans" would have been telling everyone how wrong and stupid it is to even dicuss such **** - eyed idea.

Yea sorry, I didn't mean to dismiss your "in favor of" argument completely. I admit being biased because Wes was/is the ultimate underdog, plus I think he is a once in a lifetime-type player as a slot receiver.

Stats mean nothing to me. The main reasons I would say HELL NO are 1)the chemistry with Brady, and 2) the dropoff to Edelman would be too great IMO, and that Wes is a poster boy for the Patriot Way.

Much like Troy Brown and Kevin Faulk, his "intangibles" are off the charts. Unlike guys like Milloy, Branch, Moss, Seymour and a litany of others, Welker has no issues concerning attitude, contract demands, or buying into the system 100%.

When does the TRADE BELICHIK FOR A 3rd ROUNDER thread come?

When does the TRADE BELICHIK FOR A 3rd ROUNDER thread come?

Its right behind the "why bother even drafting/trading cuz we are in love with all our players from last year". Its called team building, and it comes in many different forms. We didnt win the SB did we? Its been a LONG time since we even won a playoff game! Looking back would you have liked trading Lawyer Milloy in camp?? Now we know he got cut(we got nothing for him) and we went on to win a couple more SBs. If the same happens to Welker so be it, for those who are sensitive about certain players....buy another jersey. This thread is topical. It was my thread TRADE MANKINS NOW! right before the draft that caused all kind of commotion. Looking back I think alot of us can see it was likely the right move. Savings on cap space, a draft pick, time to develop the next guy, etc. Never mind the holdout and insulting crap that went on. There is a time and a place where anyone is tradeable and it so happens this is the time Welker has the most value. Its a appropriate question, and it certainly shown the spotlight on those who are open minded and those who I would like to place some bets with!

i for one would love to know what the 3.64% of the patsfans population who voted in favor of trading wes have been smoking...

I haven't read every post in the thread so forgive me if I repeat some things already said.

I get the point you bring up with Milloy but the difference is that we had the luxury of a possibly future HOF player to replace him with. The only player that can replace Welker's style is Edelman and obviously we just don't know.

His value might be high but I just don't see what we get in a trade being worth what we lose. There's no chance we get a 1st rounder so is a 2nd round pick (at best) really worth losing your most consistent offensive player? (besides Brady) Everyone has a peek in their value but it doesn't mean trading them is the right thing to do.

I will never understand why people think slots in future drafts are more valuable than proven proven pro bowl quality players. Wes Welker is one of the best players on this team, he comes at a good price, and the rationale for trading him is that he is playing great football? Seriously- WTF? And calling BS on incredibly bad ideas like this in no way means that I or anyone else questioning the sanity of those suggesting really bad ideas hates the draft or doesn't look at the big picture, we do, and we realize just how epocally a bad idea it is, and the same goes for trading Mankins for another pick in a draft ghat was weak and where we already had multiple picks in each of the first 3 rounds.

As far as "value" goes getting rid of a great player for a draft pick for no reason is as bad a value as it gets. Get rid of a proven great for an unknown, a terrible idea.

If the Pats kept Welker, he'd only be on the field like 2/3 of the time. They are a 2WR, 2TE offense, and Welker's clearly the 3rd best WR at running those outside routes.

It's a runaway. 215-9. This certaily would be a very unpopular move to trade Welker.

It was just as unpopular to trade Seymour.

Unless we got in touch with a GM when he just finished his 9th shot of tequila, we're not going to get a 1st round pick for Welker. If you guaranteed me we could get a high 1st rounder for Welker, I'd at least be intrigued. I know that's not happening, so I don't see the value return for trading the best slot WR in the game when we now have two legitimate outside WRs to pair him with.

I wish I could have "Liked" your post more than once.

So this thread is still having debates because.....

Exactly what I've been saying. You couldn't have said it better...

Every player and situation is entirely different. Comparing this particular situation to the Seymour situation is like apples and oranges.

It was just as unpopular to trade Seymour.

No, it wasn't.

I have to side with Deus here, without a doubt.

Comparing the value is entirely different, as Seymour netted us a 1st--while there's no way Welker grabs us a 1st rounder in this case. Trading a proven player who is substantially important on offense for yet another, 2nd rounder does not make much sense to me.

There's also the huge difference in the specific players attitude..Welker is just about everything any football coach would want, while Seymour was a lot closer to doing things on his terms, and was a part-time malcontent.

And lastly, there's the difference in terms of the future--Seymour was most likely NOT going to be re-signed by the NEP, and was going to demand something north of 10-11 million per yr. Welker has mentioned plenty of times that he has already made way more money than he could ever hope for, and that it's not always just about the money. There's an excellent chance that Welker stays here on a reasonable deal.
