What could the Pats get for trading Brian Hoyer?

I had an argument with a friend who thought they could trade him for a decent pick. I didn't think he's done enough to prove that he's worth trade consideration. So I figured I'd google it and see what I found, and I guess there is some support that the Pats could trade him.

I know the Chargers got a good deal for Whitehurst, I thought it was crazy then and even more so after watching him play.

So what could the Pats get if they wanted to trade Hoyer?

Hoyer was a UDFA and has no starting experience. At this point, Rohan Davey is a better option since at least he did really well in NFL Europe. The only reason a team would pick him up is because he made a BB team last year, but until he actually does something in the NFL he has no trade value. That's why every team passed on him in the draft.

You're a little over the edge on this one, WhiZa. Based on his playing time, Hoyer is a far better QB than Davey every was.

We need hoyer as backup. Mallet can serve as the scout QB and insurance for a couple of years.

Really? Looking at the votes here and seeing that 2nd or 3rd pick is tied for 1st in the voting boggles my mind. Seriously, the Pats got a 2nd for Cassel who actually proved something in the NFL.

Right now I don't think that the Pats could a sandwich combo for Hoyer. What has he proven? He would be nothing more than a backup somewhere else and why would some team trade the Pats a draft pick for that if they didn't address that need this past weekend?

Just because he plays on the Pats doesn't mean that he is worth a draft pick. Also, the Pats just drafted Mallet, if he pans out to be the backup to Brady then wouldn't Hoyer get cut unless they carry 3 QB's? Then a team could come in a pick up Hoyer in FA for nothing.

That article (IMO) is crap. Kolb is a way better option than Hoyer.

I don't think Hoyer would like to stay a backup for ever, i am pretty sure he wants to move on and prove he is a worthy Quarterback. The Patriots got Mallet in order to get something for trading Hoyer.
If Tom is around for the next few years, Hoyer is playing most likely his last year for the Patriots, because he wants the big job too.

I think we could squeeze a 5th out of some QB needy team for Hoyer but I'd rather keep him around because his stock WILL rise, assuming he doesn't have a some kind of setback.

Pats could get nada. If released the Panthers could get a conditional 7th from the Jets who will use him for intelligence purposes.

I said a 6th or 7th round pick, but that's pretty optomistic of me. Not that the guy stinks, but what has he done to prove himself? Nothing that I can see.

Hoyer is likely worth more to the Patriots this season than any team would be willing to offer. He does have value building (via media perception which outweights message board fan perception) as long as he continues to perform well if there ever is a pre season this season. I think next season if Mallett isn't a total bust like KOC (the last Brady replacement drafted in the third) and a new CBA doesn't preclude RFA tenders, he could warrant a 1st or be worth a second rounder in trade/tender come 2012. But the Pat's won't necessarily pull the trigger on any deal for him until or unless they believe they have a viable backup in the pipeline. They had to pull the trigger on Cassel even though they likely already knew KOC wasn't that guy because the only way to get value from Cassel going forward was via franchise tag and trade. They were lucky Hoyer proved to be a keeper months later. I would have preferred they nab another potential keeper in the late rounds this year, but the Mallett selection really precluded that. Although they may yet identify another UDFA once the dust settles to replace the Crompton kid they have on the PS already...(Tenn. QB drafted in the 5th in 2010 by SD, waived and signed to PS, cut from SD PS, signed by NE in November). At least like Hoyer Crompton has a playbook to study while locked out.

I agree with that. I just feel we need to take the homer hat off and put yourself in the shoes of the 31 other teams.

Like Hoyer but his trade value is miniscule. Not a big prototypical QB to dazzle GMs. Minimal real NFL game experience unlike Matty C's 11 win season. A contingent 4th, more likely 5th would be the most the Pats could get from another team.

Agree with Mo that his 2011 value is too high for the Pats to even think about dealing him pre-camp. Mallett would have to have a Brady 2nd year style camp for the Pats to consider dealing Hoyer even for a 2nd round pick.

Schaub was a 6-5 third round pick-he didn't have as far to go to look like a starting NFL QB as Hoyer does.

Start at whatever the Seahawks gave up for Whitehurst and go from there... Hoyer was far smarter in his preseason action than Whitehurst ever was in his time with the Chargers.

Hoyer could get an easy 3. Or be packaged with our extra 2 for something really sweet. Hoyer gets no respect. You guys act like Bill keeps people around because he's a nice guy. No way after what losing Brady and Cassel stepping in meant to this team, that Bill would ever waltz around with some jag not worthy of starting in this league. Hoyer has showed enough tangibles in preseason and 4th quarter play to worthy something. People want to remortgage their team for the myth of Kevin Kolb, and the Texans gave away the farm for 2 Matt Schaub starts. Mike Lombardi is plugged in the league, and only speaks when he has something that matters.
