Jeremy Beal vs Lamar Woodley

I like Beal on a personal level and wish him the best, but I don't think he's what this team needs. Just not sudden or explosive enough. Kind of a lesser Cunningham, I think. Maybe sometime down the line, his experience and maturity could be an asset for a team, but we have his type in spades, and I think at this point we need talent.

If we needed another Spikes I'd be interested, but with Fletcher's impressive rookie season, I'm more interested in a more instinctive Guyton for STs and passing downs. As an OLB ... Beal who?
Yes Mr. Rocks , you do go all Lady Gaga over these workout #'s.

Here are the #'s that catch my interest: 2008 season 61-15.5-8.5, 2009 69-19-11. 2010 72-19-8.5 with a high ankle sprain.

I think that I shall stick with those and let the others, including yourself, go all Lifetime Movie Network over cones, shuttles, high jumps, and 225lb reps.
I still would not be disappointed at all if BB pulled the trigger on him or Acho in the late 2nd or 3rd round.

Odd, I guess you failed to notice my downgrade of Mr. Beal during the season, well before his impressive Combine/Pro-Day report. While college stats are helpful, they aren't always the answer either. My lying eyes saw a player on my TV who did not appear to have the tools necessary for OLB in NE. As for your cultural references, I'm afraid we don't watch the same TV, perhaps if you put down the remote when it shows a football game as opposed to whichever network you are gushing over tonight with your statistics in hand.

Yes I did fail to notice your downgrade of Beal. Had I known that, I would have jumped on the Beal bandwagon sooner.

I still like Beal. I like his film. I liked his film in November, and it hasn't changed. He did stuff at OLB in college that BB asks his OLBs to do, and did it effectively. Coverage, setting the edge, pass rush. If his measurables scare other teams away, that just makes it all the more likely that he becomes a Pat. I would absolutely spend a 3rd on him if he lasts that long.

I would take a chance on Beal, but not in the 3rd round. His stock has fallen so far that he is likely a 5th or 6th round prospect now. Wes Bunting thinks there is a chance he might even go undrafted.

DE Jeremy Beal: Oklahoma
I spoke a lot about Beal and his performance at the Senior Bowl, discussing his inability to win with his get off or with a bull rush throughout (something that showed up on tape frequently). However, after running in the 5.2 range at the NFL Combine, Beal’s stock has now hit an all-time low. Some teams are even looking at him as a two-down jack backer only in a 3-4. Pretty much he isn’t fluid enough to play in space as a 3-4 rush guy and isn’t getting much love as a down DE either. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him go undrafted

Not that I place much faith in the analysis of Mr. Bunting, but any value Beal has for NE would be in the later rounds because now you are factoring in Special Teams as a primary assignment and that really hurts him. Beal is at best a reserve OLB the way his fans portray him, he does not automatically move ahead of any of the four OLB on the current roster, regardless of whether my lying eyes or rook's, or Nut's or whomever is closest to NE's assessment. Beal's speed sucks. His power sucks. His technique, his stats, how closely he has played to the ideal of a NE OLB, none of it matters if he can't play on Special Teams worth a damn given the current roster competition. Nut has found his annual lost cause.

Just got the Sporting News bi-weekly magazine in the mail. Russ Lynde did a 3 round mock.

He has the Patriots taking Beal at #60

Owing to his lack of speed, I've seen some discussion of Beal suiting an ILB position instead. I've not seen him play, but could he used as depth in that role or as a situational inside blitzer?

I rest my case.

So assuming it's the same mock that was on his site a while ago, he also has the Pats taking Clayborn at 17. Oh yeah, and Aldon was available at 17 and Watt was available at 28.

That should tell everybody all they need to know.

Lamar Woodley's workout numbers according to NFL Draft Scout:

Michigan Pro Day

40 Yrd Dash: 4.74
20 Yrd Dash: 2.72
10 Yrd Dash: 1.65
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 29
Vertical Jump: 38 1/2
Broad Jump: 9'9"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.42
3-Cone Drill:

Jeremy Beal's numbers:

NFL Combine
Height: 6022
Weight: 262
40 Yrd Dash: 5.14
20 Yrd Dash: 2.92
10 Yrd Dash: 1.78
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 22

20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.46
3-Cone Drill: 7.20

Oklahoma Pro Day
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.41
3-Cone Drill: 6.95

On paper, Lamar Woodley was far more explosive coming out of college than Jeremy Beal.

You know who does compare to Woodley? He is a little faster, a little bigger, a little quicker, and a little stronger than him actually.

Height: 6027
Weight: 270
40 Yrd Dash: 4.62
20 Yrd Dash: 2.61
10 Yrd Dash: 1.62
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 30
Vertical Jump: 36 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'05"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.37
3-Cone Drill: 6.95

Justin Houston.

Where and when would he get on the field for us? He's certainly not starting material. He's certainly not a situational pass rusher. He's not going to be a core special teamer. It seems at best Beal would be a backup inside linebacker with some versatility to play outside in a pinch...Dane Fletcher, with half the athleticism. Beal is destined to be a weekly inactive/practice squadder/camp body for Belichick. He might have some value as a 4-3 Mike. He's off my draft board, but if he goes undrafted, I might bring him in.

Houston has a hot and cold motor from what I understand.

I was just pointing out a far better athletic comparison to Woodley. I'm not sold on Houston's mind, but watching some of the highlight reals makes you hope Big Vince could beat him into shape and get the kid going (if he slides a bit in the draft).

what I meant was that beal is a poor man's justin rogers
