Per your request ... nice mock so far, check out the NE predraft contact thread for some hints while you're at it.

Zardnok post from the Aldon Smith thread - quoted below
Since this thread got bumped back up to the top, I thought I would provide a quick update on how my stint as Patriots GM over on Saints Report is going. I wish I was able to create my own thread for discussion of my picks, but alas, I am a rookie here with less than 30 posts. If someone would like to make a thread here on the draft boards, I promise to post all my stuff there and even get input on the targets I have as they come up.

The trade I made earlier was with Indy. I moved back 5 spots in the first and up 7 spots in the second and got their third rounder and gave up my 5th as well to make the value work out. In hindsight, I probably should have just hard-balled them and kept the fifth rounder. They really wanted to trade up for Tyron Smith, who I am not sold on.

So far, I have had runs on players that I had targeted and have ended up selecting some players a tad higher than I anticipated them going. I guess it just goes to show that the draft is a fluid thing and you have to be willing to adapt and adjust your picks depending on what everyone else does around you. Ultimately, I think I am doing OK so far and hope I do not end up in some post here with "Look at who this idiot on Saints Report drafted for us!" as the title.

Rd 1- #22 Muhammed Wilkerson DE Temple I think I read it some where on this site, but the biggest need for the Pats is DE. In fact, it seems to be a recurring theme here over the past few years.

#28 Brooks Reed OLB Arizona Another clamor around here is for an elite Pass-rusher. I am not sure if Reed is elite, but he was the best available when I selected and his stock has really been on the rise.

Rd 2- #33 Danny Watkins OG Baylor He is the second best interior lineman behind Pouncy. I had hoped to target him a bit later in the second, but there was a run on O-Lineman and nobody else available really that gave as much value IMO.

#53 Benjamin Ijilana OT Villanova He was the best OT remaining on the board and I have always had a soft-spot for smaller school prospects. He is shorter than the Pats prefer, but he can man the right side or even move inside if he can not hack it outside.

Rd 3 #74 Jarvis Jenkins DE/DT Clemson Again with the 5-technique thing. He does not offer much in the way of pass-rush ability, at least not in college where he was constantly double teamed, but he does have some quickness and is quite stout against the run. Watching him play shows a lot more strength than he tested at the combine, so I am going by what I saw. Some prognosticators have suggested he could play NT in a 3-4 as well. I am not sure about that, but he may be a swing guy that can play both.

The Saints have a poll pick tomorrow, which should last half the day or so and then I am up again with #87 from Indy and then #92 soon there after. I am looking at possibly a RB and or CB/S with the next two picks.

Ingram, Leshoure, and Ryan Williams are the only RB selected so far and I have my eye on DeMarco Murray, but I have a feeling he will be the winner of the Saints poll. He seems to have the game breaking ability that the Pats are looking for. Kendall Hunter is probably my back-up plan for RB if Murray is selected, but I am going to do more reading on Jordan Todman and Shane Vereen.

As for DBs, that is where the pickings get quite a bit thinner. Curtis Brown was my primary target for the first pick this round, but someone moved up and grabbed him. That started a run on DBs and I missed out on Davon House as well. That leaves me a pool of Chimdi Chekwa, Jalil Brown, Robert Sands, and Jaiquawn Jarret. I am sure I am forgetting someone, but there have been a lot of DBs taken.

Another option at the end of Rd 3 is a sliding Jerrel Powe, but I am not sure if DT is a need now that I have grabbed Jenkins who can perhaps swing inside. Seems to me BB is happy with the depth in the middle, but I see Powe as a rare physical specimen who really seems to have turned the corner mentally and academically.

The only two centers I feel can start day one are Wisniewski and Pouncey with Hudson being a strong guard that would need time to adjust to Center. Every time I got ready to grab one of them, someone else grabbed them so I am left with my #4 center Brandon Fusco from Slippery Rock who I am pretty sure I can get with my fourth rounder. I am concerned that he will need at least a year, probably two, to build strength and adjust to life in the NFL, but so will my back-up plan at Center Tim Barnes. I see Fusco as the higher upside, but Barnes as the safer pick despite him coming from a Spread offense. O'Dowd is the other center I see talked about highly, but I removed him from my draft board for medical reasons.

With the 6th round pick, I will likely try to pick up some small school WR like Stephen Burton from West Texas A&M who ran a 4.38 40 with a 1.46 10 yard split at his pro-day or maybe Cecil Shorts from Mount Union who was responsible for 73 TDs and almost 5400 all-purpose yards in college. DB may also be a target if I decide to go with Powe at the end of the 3rd. It just depends on who is available as there could be someone else of great value sliding. I will worry about this pick when the 6th round starts.

I'm OK with the draft so far. I would have liked (still would) an OT, since I think Ijalana is a guard, but maybe Watkins can play tackle if necessary.

Keep an eye on OTs like Carpenter and Brewster later on. C O'Dowd. And of the RBs you've discussed, I think Vereen is the favorite around here. CB Johnny Patrick might be a good call late in the 3rd or in the 4th if other targets are gone, and there's always a burner WR like the kid from Abilene Christian who could be worth the gamble.

Late round OT prospects whom I see as "fits" for NE's scheme:
-- James Carpenter (Alabama)
-- Jah Reid (UCF)
-- Pete Hendrickson (Tulane)
-- Lee Ziemba (Auburn)
-- Jarriel King (South Carolina)
-- Bryon Stingily (Louisville)
-- Cameron Bradfield (Grand Valley State)

As long as we're talking O-line, Mike Person (Montana) and Brandon Fusco (Slippery Rock) are drawing attention and have the mobility NE likes for Guards who spend a lot of time trying to get ahead of RBs and WRs on screen plays.

Thank you EVER so much!

For those unfamiliar, we run an "Experts" Mock over on Saints Report each year with board members researching and serving as the GMs for the team. We are restricted to only trading current year draft picks, no players or future picks. This works out great for me serving as the Pats GM, because I get to spend all of the picks that BB stockpiles! We also have a "Non-Experts" mock where pretty much anything goes, but those guys smell funny, so I stay away from them.

I am by no means an Expert on the Patriots, but I do know how to read and have spent a considerable time researching here on these boards. They are by FAR the best source I have found for Patriots draft information. Reading here has definitely broadened me as a football fan and opened my eyes to some players I had originally overlooked.

As Box o Rocks quoted, I think I am doing OK so far. I was disappointed to miss out on one of the top-OTs, but I gambled and lost. I was sitting at 17 with 3 OTs staring me in the face, so I figured I could slide back 5 spots and still get one and then take Wilkerson with the 2nd pick. Boom Boom Boom and they were all gone. It did score me an extra 3rd rounder, so that is nice and I did ultimately end up with an OT pick, although Ijilana is projected inside by many folks. I would like to see him get a shot on the outside to see if he can adjust and if not slide him inside.

I would definitely like to add more of a pure OT at some point, I just see myself running out of picks already. I really wish I had hard-balled and kept my 5th in the trade I did earlier. It would have made a big difference in how I handle the next couple of picks.

It worked out for the best Z, the projected round one OTs don't carry a round one grade on my best guess at a Pats' board. Watkins actually doesn't carry a round one grade either, but he's a great mauler prospect so he may surprise me - Ijalana's got two negatives, small school (never been a small school OL drafted on BB's watch) and reported lack of "nasty" (though he seemed pretty aggressive against Eastern Washington in the playoffs), but Ijalana is on my board where you took him.

I agree with Uncle Heatster, Carpenter is the best of the rest ... good hunting.

BTW, patchick left you feedback in the Aldon Smith thread too.

:eat3:

Saints poll will likely come down to a run-off between Tyler Sash, Shane Vareen, and Chris Carter.

I have an offer to trade back from #87 and pick up two 4th rounders #99 and #121.

Taking the pick 121 to move back 12 picks. Depending on what is happening on your board, I could see that...

Top of the fourh FTW!

My trade deal fell through. The guy was targeting Vareen, but when he went to the Bills board, they talked about how bad he sucked, so the guy rescinded his offer. I laughed and told him about how highly the folks on the Pats board considered Vareen. I guess that is the benefit of researching multiple sources and getting a plethora of information. Same as the folks here are not as high on Castonzo vs other boards where he is the clear cut #1 tackle available.

Currently there is a Run-Off poll for the Saints pick between Vareen and Sash. Sash appears to be running away with it, so I think my next pick comes down to Vareen or Murray to fill the RB slot. I could totally throw things for a loop and take them BOTH since I have two late third picks. That would mean I target Fusco in the fourth and then hope some semblance of DB falls to the 6th rounder. It would also preclude me getting an OT.

Any final thoughts before I pull the trigger here?? Likely for Vareen.

Do you have time to list who has been drafted in the third so far? Or is there a link we can check for ourselves?

I'm fine with Vareen, I see him as a decent fit for NE with our current RB crew, Murray is an excellent receiver, but everything else leaves me doubting his value that high. I'd be interested to know what other RB prospects you might have been considering later.

If Colorado CB Jalili Brown hasn't been selected yet, mid-to-late third isn't a huge reach for him as he is technically good at CB and has the willingness against the run and the size to move to FS or play a hybrid between the two as needed.

What has happened in the OT market since Uncle Heatster talked about Carpenter?

Pity you couldn't get the trade, the Buffalo lads have an excellent RB and their under-utilized first from last year so I'd see their perspectives to be a bit jaded.

Looking back over the thread again, if Carpenter and Brown are both still there, select them in that order and I'm very pleased with where this draft is falling.

I took Vareen with my last pick and am up again once Atlanta makes another selection.

I tried to add in a link to the draft, but I need 50 posts before I can add links. A quick Google for Saints Report Experts Draft should get you there though, or could just go to Saintsreport dot com and go to SSF (SaintsSuperForum) where we do all NFL discussions, and the Experts draft should be near the top. The first two rounds are currently stickied I believe.

As for OTs, Carpenter went #77 to Cincy. Pinkston a pick before. Barksdale the pick after followed by Boling to make 4 O-Lineman in a row.

My next pick should be up soon. Jalil Brown is near the top of my list so far for DBs. Chekwa is up there as well and Buster Skrine is an intriguing guy as well.

Another sliding injured player is Greg Romeus. Not sure if he would be worth a flier or not considering the way the draft is going.

Double up with Demarco Murray?

Thoughts?? I am leaning towards Jalil Brown.

I don't think that Jalil Brown has the quickness to play corner for the Pats.

I like Romeus, and he would be a good pick. He might be there later. WR is worth a look. We're getting to the point where guys like Edmund Gates or Greg Little are worth the risk. I think Orlando Franklin would make a good RT prospect. Johnny Patrick is one of my favorite corners in the draft, but I like Jalil Brown also.

Jalil's numbers are quick enough for NE, but I'm still thinking of him as more of a hybrid FS/CB prospect, NE has enough quickness inside with Wilhite and Butler. Brown is more of an outside kid with the size to play press.

Jalil improved his 40-time during his Pro-Day to a 4.46 and backed it up with another 4.46.

Another name that has come up while researching late round DBs is Chris Prosinski. Any word on him around Pats land? He has been a very productive Safety for Wyoming and busted off some crazy good numbers at his pro-day. CBS Sports has him as one of their top-risers. I think I may take a flier with him with the 6th pick if he is around.

CBS Sports said:
A very productive tackler in college, Prosinski surprised scouts with his athleticism; few expected the All-Mountain West pick to post a 4.39 40, 39 1/2-inch vertical, 4.28 short shuttle, and 11-foot-2-inch broad jump. That sort of performance may earn him late-round consideration, especially in a weak safety class.

I don't get the opportunity to watch Wyoming much, or ever, but the kid sounds like the real deal. His athleticism is off the charts, and he has the production to match. Nothing wrong with spending a 6th or 7th on him. At the least he'll be a dynamic ST player and a short yardage safety. At best, we could be looking at John Lynch light.

I am still on track to grab Brandon Fusco with the 4th rounder unless B-More grabs him. I have Indy's pick ready to go and it is a SS, so I just have to worry about B-More.

I know BB would never draft as many "small school" O-Lineman as I am, but I love me some small school sleepers. It is part of that whole root for the underdog thing Americans love I guess.

Pats picks so far-

#22 Muhammed Wilkerson DE
#28 Brooks Reed OLB
#33 Danny Watkins OG
#53 Benjamin Ijalana OT
#74 Jarvis Jenkins DE/DT
#87 Shane Vareen RB
#92 Jalil Brown CB

I selected Chris Prosinski with the final pick in this draft giving me a late round "Gem" at FS which will allow BB to trade away Merriwether for a first rounder next year.

My final draft class for the Patriots did not feature as much value as I expected, but that is perhaps some of my own doing for trading down in the first round and missing out on one of the "premiere" OT. I did score Ijalana in the middle of the 2nd, but it shifted my board down much more than I expected. I hit most of the high points, well maybe not WR, but I think I addressed the other needs and doubled up for value on 5-Tech when Jenkins slipped.

Hopefully I represented the Patriots well in our annual Saints Report "Experts" mock. So Pats faithful, grade my draft and let me know how I did. Could you live with this draft?? Is it too small school centric??
