Kudos to Bill O'Brien

One of the TD drives was run on 1st, play-action on 2nd for the 1st down. They did that all the way down the field. The play that ended up as a[nother] Gronk TD, came on 2nd down after a 1st down run. The Steeler DB STILL bit on the play action. I couldn't believe it.

Anyway, back to O'Brien. He has his ups and downs, overall he seems to have improved from last year. We won't know for sure how far he's progressing until probably next year whether BB feels he has earned the OC title or not.

Titles dont mean anything in BBs mind. He could already feel that he has earned the OC title. Clearly he has faith and confidence in his play calling ability as I noticed numerous times while the offense was on the field BB was huddled up with the defense, and not watching what was happening on the field.

Titles absolutely 100% mean something in both BB and O'Brien's mind. If they meant NOTHING, O'Brien would have the title right now. BB wouldn't have waited this many years to finally decide titles are "meaningless". The fact that he did not earn the title last year just means he wasn't ready for it yet in BB's mind. McDaniels earned it, O'Brien has not yet.

Well, if we're going to play the mind-reading game, I'll go. I don't think it's a matter of "earning" anything as Belichick deciding whether he wants certain guys to be under the microscope. To the extent he can, he shields guys from criticism if things don't go well by not designating them as coordinators.

Really they dont? BB speaking on The Big Show this off season about the topic.
“I don’t know — I think what’s important is the process and how things work,” he said when asked if would be interested in giving someone the title. “I’ve never been a big believer in titles. I’ve had them; I haven’t had them. I don’t think that’s an important thing. I think it’s how an operation works, how it functions.”

“Titles are fine, nothing wrong with them,” Belichick said, according to the release. “But the most important thing is each person’s role, that we do everything we can to help the players succeed – everyone collectively getting the job done.”

I really don't think it has anything to do with titles.

I firmly believe that he wanted to put a personal stamp on a young team and not have a OC & DC potentially cloud his messaging to the team. He took ownership and full accountability. There were rumblings that he was not pleased with Pees as it related to him "teaching" the defense and BB wanted to make sure that was occuring in 2010- either by him or Patricia.

There could be some truth that he wanted to "protect" O'Brien and Patricia but I do think that he felt he was most qualified for the job(s) and that they wern't- yet.
