Pats sign new long snapper

This is pretty narrow sighted. Just because they signed Kazcur first doesn't mean they "prioritized him" ahead of Wilfork. Wilfork's contract was going to be for a ton more money and was likely more complicated. Also, Kazcur was probably much more willing to just take what he could get, given he doesn't have nearly the open market value of Wilfork. That's why ultimately the Pats had to franchise Wilfork before getting a deal done.

That's prioritizing the signings.

Re: Pats sign new long snapper?

Pure Long Snappers are almost never drafted. Maybe one a decade if that.
He simply saying that it damn well be a sure thing if you're going to actually use a draft pick on one. And this is the reason teams don't draft them.

I'd agree if more than 10% of 6th round picks ever amounted to something.

Re: Pats sign new long snapper?

Who had similar issues to Ingram a year ago. Long snapping is one of those jobs that only get you noticed when you screw up.
Or when you make snow angels.

Not necessarily. Consider the length of time from start of negotiation to finish for typical contracts of those players' caliber (obviously I'm using hypothetical numbers):

Wilfork's contract will take a month to complete due to money, structure, possible options for the player, intangibles.

Kazcur's contract will take a week to complete due to less money, simpler structure, fewer options for the player, intangibles.

The Patriots start negotiating with Wilfork first, use the franchise tag on him when they can't get him signed before free agency, and end up signing him in a month.

A few days after starting the Wilfork talks, they meet with Kazcur, the negotiations are smooth, he accepts the money at the level they think is fair, and he signs in a week.

Sure, technically, Kazcur signed first, but based on who was approached first, and what tools the Patriots used to make sure they signed him, I would consider Wilfork the priority in that situation.

Can't say i have any issue with this move. Something had to be done before disaster strikes later down the road where it can really hurt. I was one of the ppl advocating bringing in some competition to light a fire. Didn't think they'd cut him so soon tho.

In the words of bradyftw "what are u gonna do with a long snapper who can't long snap?"

Hindsight is 20/20 but that extra 20% for paxton's expertise aint lookin quite so steep anymore that's for damn sure. All the ppl that are downplaying this would be singing a different tune had mesko not been able to field that ball in SD.

Once per decade....

maybe we should have drafted Tyler Schmitt instead.

OH...Wise guy, EH??

Yet ANOTHER precious 6th Round Pick WANTONLY tossed away!!

I'd be curious how many times you heard Ingram's name last year. Chances are twice: Once when he was drafted, and some other random time during the year when they listed rookies on the roster.

He played well last year, proving he CAN do the job. Not only that, it's not like he had some glaring weakness that teams could scout, thus causing his issues. From all indications, he just simply "lost" it. I'm not blaming BB for a fluky turnaround from a sixth round pick, and neither should you.

Nicely put.

One of the many things I like about Coach Bill is that he's got the testicular fortitude to invest a Pick on underrated positions of importance. Thank GOD he did so on Zoltan the Magnificent, who hauled in Ingram's mulitple Fluffy Ducks with the coolness of a 10 year Vet...otherwise, Ingram's Multi Week Melt Down could've cost us a couple of GAMES.

Coach Bill did the right thing, drafting him.

And he did the right thing, once again, in giving him a few Opps to work it out.

And he most certainly did the right thing, once it became clear that the problems were lingering, in cutting him loose.

Re: Pats sign new long snapper?

Ingram was the consensus best LS in the draft. Don't get all bummed out over a wasted pick.

BB is a drafting genius and has been able to go into the draft the last few years with multiple high round picks - and more picks than can be expected to make the team in any given year.

This has given the Pats the luxury of "reaching" for top rated specialist in the middle rounds of the draft (Gostkowski, Ingram, Mezko) ahead of other teams.

Ingram was a bust, but don't sweat the draft pick.

Exactly.

Thanks to Coach Bill's combination of Vision + Balls, we now have one of the very best ~ if not THE best ~ at Kicker AND Punter. How often has THAT happened, in the last 90 years??

I'm sorry but enough of this foolishness. If you actually believe they only work on one contract at a time you are unbelievably naive, or, as usual, you are just making up things to push your point of view, oh wow there's a surprise.

Let's come up with an example here. I have four players I want to sign, I have the ability to sign them all. I call up the first guy's agent and make an offer, he says, let me show this to my client and get back to you. The same thing happens to #2, and #3, but on the fourth call, this guys agent says, that is a great offer, the numbers seem to work, lets get this done. Now I am still waiting to hear from the other guys, but #4 comes in and signs on the dotted line, while we still haven't heard from the other guys. Does this mean I wanted to sign #4 the most? Nope

If I hadn't watched the DeNiro movie Ronin,
I would have no idea what that word meant.

BTW, how is Seppuku different from Hari-Kiri?

In no way at all, actually...But your might've been a rhetorical question.

Re: Pats sign new long snapper?

Yeh, what a waste of a pick. Should have drafted that kid Suh instead of a bum of a long snapper :bricks:

Yup, Jon Suh fro Michigan State Community College would be a great upgrade at safety.

In other news, the Red Sox have offered Mesko a job at Short Stop.

Aren't both of them forms of ritual suicide?
Maybe seppuku is performed by many at once,
whereas hari-kiri is performed by an individual.

If you actually believe that teams don't prioritize signings, I don't know what to tell you. I'll let Mr. Kraft tell you for me:

"We have a budget we've set for next year. Our first priority is with Vince," Kraft told the Boston Herald. "I think we've had some positive discussions. We're very close. I hope we can conclude it soon."

Of course teams prioritize signings. The question before us is whether you can discern the priority from the order of signings. For me, Brady and Wilfork were the highest priority signings/extensions going into the offseason followed by Bodden and Mankins. The fact that the contracts for Wilfork and Brady weren't signed first does NOT make them lower priority targets than whoever was signed/extended before them.

If you actually believe that teams don't prioritize signings, I don't know what to tell you. That level of naivete is probably too strong to overcome.
