Patriots/Vikings wearing throwbacks this weekend.

Many of the "throwbacks" around the league are just atrocious. In a few cases, however, I think the throwbacks are actually nicer than the teams' current unis. Two that I would place in that category are the Pats and the Chargers. I love the red jersey, "Pat Patriot' look for the Pats. Unfortunately my guess is the success the Pats have had in blue, with the execrable Flying Elvis, means that the Krafts won't make a change.

Why the Chargers went away from those awesome light blue jerseys will always be a mystery to me. Those might have been the best uniforms ever.

I also have always like Miami's colors.

Pewster, you're behind the times in both music and uni preference. Pats fans turning "red" with embarrassment year after year. Those were the days of cheap ownership and losing two of every three, sometimes more. With the exception of a few bright spots, the Patriots were pretty much a second-rate franchise from their inception throughout the "red uni era," which didn't leave much to fondly look back upon.

As for prog: subscribe to the magazine (very affordable). You'll see how much things have progressed since the '70s -- just like the new millennium Patriots. :rocker:

I don't know any Pats fans who were ever embarrassed to like this team, let alone turn red. And again and again, I see people perpetuating the myth that The Pats were a perennial doormat or known to have a .333 winning percentage. They WEREN'T. I just checked yearly records. Christ, they went between 1976 to 1988, 13 straight seasons, and only had one, that's ONE losing one. 11 winning records, one 8-8, and one losing year.
Team was stocked with talent. Grogan, Russ Francis, Stanley Morgan, Hog Hannah, Tim Fox, Raymond Clayborn, Sam Cunningham, etc., etc.
People keep referencing the Rod McPhereson years and sh*t, like that was what the Pats always were like. That period right before Kraft, Parcells, & Bledsoe. You'd think nobody in Pats Nation is over 30 years old these days.

And although they weren't among the elite teams in the top tier, they always were right in the forefront and/or forerunners of the second third of the league who continuously gave the top teams a good run for their money every year. The problem was, they had Miami ahead of them in the division. Pats were always considered a little better than the league's mid-pack teams.
Hey, if that's some of your reasoning to not wanna see the throwbacks, I don't know what you want, because those Pat Patriot unis freaking rule. They're gorgeous.

So there. Nhah! lol. Bleh... and stuff.

Good points. Some people tend to exaggerate the Pats' ineptitude prior to the Brady/Belichick years. They had a decent history before 2001. I love the red jerseys and I hope they make wearing them a yearly thing.

Look, I remember going to games in the early '90s (before Parcells) where the stadium was less than half full on a regular basis. Tickets were going for pennies on the dollar in the parking lot. Whatever tradition was established to that point had eroded quite badly, so it's safe to say that plenty of folks were embarrassed by the franchise and its cheap/bumbling ways. Something like that would never happen in places like Green Bay or Pittsburgh. One Super Bowl appearance in 33 years and they got slaughtered. Those red unis = bad mojo. :snob:

I know i'm in the minority on this one...and this subject of throwbacks has been broached before....but i HATE em. Not that i don't like the pat patriot logo...or the red...jersey's looked great on the field.....i just hate the patriots and their throwbacks because...well...with all do respect to players of those years.....most of the teams SUCKED.

bad football....bad players (not all...we had our share of very good ones and 1 or 2 GREAT ones)......but more importantly...lots of bad ownerships/front offices.

I wouldn't mind if they were never worn and just hung in glass in the Hall at Patriots Place.

Like i said, i know i'm in the minority and i'll take the lumps from the ole-timers (sorry guys!) but not a fan!

that's why opinions are like...***holes...we all got one!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a member of the ENLIGHTENED minority.

Again, you're talking about the early 90's. Again, you're pointing to the **** McPherson/Rod Rust era. Yeah, they blew back then. Yes, for a very short period of time.
Tunes, that's like continuously pointing to one small era of a band's long history and saying how much it sucked. Like when the personnel had a few inferior members and/or the band underwent a change in material or style.
And also, you don't measure a team by Super Bowls. That's oversimplifying it.
Lastly, hey, it's freaking Boston. Boston ain't known for freaking football. The New England area should be grateful to even have an NFL franchise. They even almost moved to St. Louis and Hartford in the past.

Anyway, what band totally disowns its history? That's like saying The Stones not acknowledging Brian Jones or Mick Taylor. That's what you're doing.

Tunes, you, out of all people, should know how important history is. Visual history. My eyes gonna have 'nuther orgasm this afternoon seeing that red on the Foxboro turf. It's the way it belongs. I'm sorry you felt so ashamed to be a Pats fan in the early 90's. Maybe you should look inward for the reasons, not outward onto the freaking glorious New England Patriots.

It's like not acknowledging the path one has taken to get to where they've arrived. Now, what would tha freaking Dalai Lama say 'bout that?

Tunes, you have an identity crisis er sumpthin'?

(ehh ha ha. Just kidding. This is getting surreal.)

... and furthermore (lol)...
Every time the Pats lost, pre-Flying Elvis, I'd always get satisfaction by saying to myself,"Well, at least they LOOK better than the other team." For the most part, fans of other teams always liked the red unis and their unique helmet. It was the most intricate helmet logo in the NFL. There was more DETAIL to the Pat Patriot guy. It took more brush strokes to create him.
And I like the fact that it's stationary. Now everything has to look like it's whooshing by. Inanimate objects now have to be stretched and flanged? What is that? It's like logos are genetically infused with the Nike swoosh these days.
Wtf IS the flying Elvis? (Well, besides a Leaving Las Vegas parachute troop). And wtf does Elvis have to do with The Patriots? I love Elvis. He's The King and his daughter is smoking hawt and all, but that's Memphis & Vegas imagery.

And Tunes, you have a selective memory about 1985. I, ME, I remember the ROAD to the Super Bowl. The road victories in The Meadowlands, in Oakland (where Sullivan's son got in a freaking fistfight with some Raider douche. Tell me that didn't rule.) and in The Orange Bowl, where The Patriots won for the 1st time since November of 1966, when I was TWO months old. ************, talk about exercising demons!
Tunes, you wanna obsess on the final score down New Orleans way, go ahead. Know what I remember about that day????

I remember about how PROUD I felt seeing my cherished Pats on the field with the whole nation watching. And when the final gun sounded, know how I consoled myself after 4 hours of torture???

I smiled through bloodshot eyes and told myself,"Well, at least The Pats LOOKED better than Tha Bears. Those uniforms are SWEET!"

I still love seeing clips from that game. The Red, White, & Blue looks so wonderful counter-pointed against that green field. Gawd, the eye is drawn so strongly to those, you barely even notice the other team.

I watch footbawl for the pageantry of the whole thing as much as the final score. The look their gonna sport today is a whole bursting bouquet of color and beautiful design.

(Geebus how gay was that? Bwah.)

Well, I'm 30, so my formative years of following the Pats involved the McPherson/Rust years. So yes, the Kraft era, and the Brady/Belichick era in particular, does seem a bit messianic to me. As such, the blue unis (both the 90s and the current style) will always hold a special place for me.

Why the Chargers went away from those awesome light blue jerseys will always be a mystery to me. Those might have been the best uniforms ever.

I also have always like Miami's colors.

I know we're hijacking the hijacking of the thread, but I kind of agree about the Miami unis. The 80s-era Redskin uniforms, and the Bears uniforms are among the best I've seen as well.

I actually like the look of the red throwbacks, as well, and would put them among the better uniforms of the NFL. I also like the look of the current uniform quite a bit actually.
