Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Pats - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

1. When the Patriots’ captains head to midfield for the opening coin flip today, fans will notice a new addition: Alge Crumpler. The veteran tight end has proven to be a big-time presence in the locker room...

Psyched for Alge. So much press has gone the way of Hernandez and Gronk, it's nice to give the blocker/teacher some respect.

10. After two weeks in which the Patriots’ trade of Randy Moss was a hot topic of discussion, any guesses on which player is featured on the ticket for today’s game? That’s right – it’s Moss. The tickets, of course, are printed up at the start of the year.

Lots of other good items in there too.

Good to see Alge given a captain role!

Seems to have been a fantastic pick up, great guy.

A couple other interesting tidbits.

One, Carson Palmer is channeling Drew Bledsoe.

Two, Hakeem Nicks is breaking out, nice to see. He was the second option to Brandon Tate at UNC and Tate was considered the star go-to WR on that team.

Weren't the other two for the other home games so far Faulk and Bodden?????

Can you say jinx?

Really? Someone better cancel that Brady home ticket.

Glad to see Alge getting some credit. By all accounts, he's fit in as a true Patriot since day 1 of joining us.

I love Alge Crumpler. He's a stud blocker, actually ENJOYS doing it, but also has extremely soft hands as a receiver. He's pretty much a freak of nature at the tight end position given his size and skills.

Oh great! A shout-out to Alge thread.

He was on Patriots All-Access and I thought he was just terrific-- modest, funny, enthusiastic, well-spoken and in love with football. And when Brady was interviewed on All-Access he was asked about the tight ends. Zolak wanted him to talk about Gronkowski and Hernandez. Instead Brady wanted to talk about Alge. He said that he's the spirit of the team and talked about how his eyes light up whenever he can get involved in a play.

Fun fact. He said that he was named for Algernon, the mouse in Flowers for Algernon, so, in honour of Mr Crumpler, I reread it -- probably the first time in forty years. It's a wonderful novel and holds up remarkably well. Strongly recommended.

Would have been hilarious if Moss was on the tickets for the Oct 31 Vikings game.

Good stuff by Reiss again. Its almost comforting to read a column and get interesting football info, and NOT a bunch of self promoting opinion and unsubstantiated rumors. He's like an oasis in the desert

Not to mention Welker on 10/31!!

Since his parents like literary mice, he's just lucky he wasn't named Pippa Crumpler for Pippa Mouse or alternately Frisby Crumpler from the Rats of Nimh.

good for Alge. good to see a quiet professinal get his kudos

Always a great sign when a new player joins the team and very quickly becomes a captain.

Alge rocks. This locker room needed guys like him. He's also a lights out blocker, and still has soft hands. He makes Gronk and Hernandez better players and better men. I doubt such a talented pair TEs was ever drafted by the same team in the same year, and we are very lucky to have a player like Alge effin Crumpler mentoring them. I truly hope that Alge will remain productive enough, long enough that he will be part of the nickname, when NE's TEs earn one.

Definitely the right guy in the right place. He can still make an impact on the field -- I was impressed with him in camp -- but he's also the perfect mentor to a pair of rookies who will be a huge part of the team's future. All together, that's a heck of a TE squad.

7. One random note through five weeks: Bill Belichick is one of the only head coaches in the NFL not to throw a challenge flag this season

This would be more impressive if the actual number of coaches who haven't thrown a flag had been included. As it is, it doesn't say much.
Rest of the stuff is very interesting and that Crumpler news is great.

Or Mickey

Is Alge signed for just this year or is he here for more than just this year?
