I think the most overlooked part of this story from Brady's POV is the fact that Brady is all about winning no matter what. After the Jets game, why would he want to throw the ball to Moss? Moss was hurting the team, maybe not intentionally throwing the game, but certainly dogging it; and Brady is all about drinking the T-E-A-M kool aid.

I think this cannot be overlooked. Remember how mad Brady was in the game that Galloway was messing up. And then Galloway was gone...

I think it's crazy to think that Brady wouldn't at least be consulted prior to the deal being finalized. Not saying he had veto power, but he had to have known.

Agreed- by the same token, if Brady had been adamantly against it, I doubt the trade happens. From that, you can more or less assume that he was okay with it, although I'm curious how SMY learned that he had approved the deal other than that.

Along with everyone on this board, I can think of 51 other people who would be interested in knowing Tom's views on the subject. It is entirely possible that one of the other players on the team asked Tom, "You okay with Randy being traded?" "Yeah, me and coached discussed it, I told him I was cool with it" And then that player talked to SMY.

I PM'd SMYoung. Of course she couldn't reveal her source (or she already would have) but I did ask her to give us a little bit more than she said - to at least tell us if it was one or more players, members of the Patriots front office, etc. that gave her that info. I'll let you know if she responds.

Shalise claims that BB told Randy at the start of the off-season that he wasn't in the team's long-term plans and that BB changed his mind in the course of training camp.

"... according to a source close to Moss, the receiver already had been told by coach Bill Belichick that he wasn’t part of their future plans.

During camp, the source said, Belichick reversed course. As the team stretched one day, the coach approached Moss about starting talks on a new deal.

Moss, however, told Belichick it wasn’t the right time, that they could talk after the season. Around that time, the source indicates, Moss began to believe that he would be traded before the season began."


If this is true, then Randy's bizarre behaviour becomes very understandable -- he's nothing if not, insecure -- and it would show really poor personnel management by BB. But, of course, "a source close to Moss" would say that kind of thing -- and we shouldn't forget that Shalise seems to be making a living out of putting the viewpoint of disgruntled former Patriots players.

The one thing about that whole thing that sounds fishy to me is the idea that BB would tell Randy he's not part of the team's future plans. Even if the coach had already decided that, do we really believe he would tell him that? If he didn't want to negotiate a new deal at that point, wouldn't he say "let's talk after the season?" or something to that effect. Doesn't make sense to me.

"Tom Brady, comfortable with Wes Welker and a young corps of receivers that includes Brandon Tate, Julian Edelman, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, gave the deal his thumbs-up. The deal was completed Wednesday morning."

This just seems weird. So against the Jets, Brady can't stop throwing to Moss even when he is not open and now he decides he would rather throw to a bunch of receivers who have no NFL experience other than Welker? How does than make any sense?

Quite true. I searched under Shalise and got nothing and didn't think to look in that thread. And I still think that the interesting thing is that this source says that BB gave Randy the thumbs-down at the end of last season.

Of course there is more to the story. Moss said that Brady's hair made him look like a girl, and Brady had him traded.

A-HAH!!! A voice of reason. You're right PJ and I absolutely agree with your assumption. Brady is a 10 year veteran and by far THE most important player on the team and one of the most important in the league. You can't start a team with a wide receiver....unless maybe you're a tennis fan!

The last thing Kraft and BB would want is a pissed off Tom Brady. Of course it was discussed with him!

I repeat, if the rumour is true, then things make a certain kind of sense.

On that assumption,

(1) It's terrible man management. What you say to Randy after the end of last season is "Randy, you're one of the greatest players ever to play the game and everyone in New England loves you. Now I don't know if we're going to be able to give you a top-dollar contract at the end of next year, given all the uncertainties, but you can play here for as long as you want if you can accept those limitations. If not, play out your contract and I'll do everything I can to make sure you leave here with a ring."

How could you say anything else? This guy needs to feel that he's special -- which he is.

(2) Having done that, you don't change your mind.

(3) You shouldn't be surprised at Moss's attempts (as it seems) to draw a distinction between playing for the team and making clear to the organization that he's disaffected -- which, of course, don't work out.

We don't know that they didn't do that, although I doubt it and there is a reason why. Everything here is a test. How much they are willing to extend themselves for you or even want to retain you is based in part on how much you want to win here. I used to think they should polish up their people skills. They don't for a reason. If you need to be coddled to do your job here, you don't belong here. There are signs all over the building pertaining to that. They took down all the old pictures, not the adages.
