Merged again and again: I do/don't like the Moss trade because...

So, I haven't read every post in every thread on Moss so far, but I've read a bunch, and I just have to say I am SHOCKED that I haven't seen the words "Dog Faker" even once!

No.

"full accuracy" would be:

Less than one year of the 2010 Moss
2012 7th
2012 5th compensatory

For
2011 3rd

And for "full accuracy" with appropriate context, you can't compare 2012 draft picks equally with 2011 draft picks. You generally subtract a round in value as you move out a year. So the 2012 7th is of inconsequential value and the 2012 comp 5th (even if the Pats got it) is like a late 6th. In other words, while it is technically accurate to include them in the discussion, assigning them any real value is a stretch.

Moss wanted an extension. The Patriots could either have given him that extension, or they could have traded Moss before the season and gotten another receiver to take his place. Guys like Boldin, just to point to one example, were certainly available. Barring that, they could have just required Moss to play out the season, per his contract.

As of right now, this team's WR3 is either Edelman or Price. Let's not pretend that this isn't another Patriots screw up.

I don't know if it's a screw up or not. We'll find that out soon enough.

Personally, I don't think the Patriots should have given Moss an extension beyond next year. If that was the sticking point, I'd say they made the right call. There's also the question of when, exactly, Moss started acting up. During training camp? More recently? If they underestimated the degree of his unhappiness, that could be deemed a screw up on their part.

I don't think requiring Moss to play out his contract when he's unhappy is such a good move. In fact, if the past is any indication, it could be even worse than not having him on the team at all.

Too bad lets move on!

Moss is out of here. That does not surprise me in the least. That we traded him for third round pick out of Minnesota is a bit disappointing, I was hoping for a 2nd rounder.

Pats have very good depth at WR and at TE and they also appear to be relying on the run a lot more.

Moss sounds like he was a disruptive force in the locker room and there is a reason why he keeps getting moved around every couple of years.

I'm actually hopeful that the team will move forward and the timing is real good early in the bye period.

I do not like the trade because it imperils the Pats this season and we have so many picks next year (in addition to the young guys we already have on the team) that a third round pick doesn't mean that much to us in terms of "value." If the Pats are able to use the pick (or a package of picks) to immediately acquire a veteran deep threat receiver I will be open to changing my opinion, but so far, the silence is deafening from Foxboro.

You can't have this both ways, Jack, no matter how hard you try. You can't use paragraph 3 in conjunction with paragraph 2, and use them in defense of the team's move. If you truly "don't think the Patriots should have given Moss an extension beyond next year" AND "don't think requiring Moss to play out his contract when he's unhappy is such a good move. ", then the team was stupid to not make a move before the season began.

The team screwed up. It's been doing this with alarming frequency since Pioli went to K.C..

Re: Too bad lets move on!

It might be from a team standpoint time to move on. But on this message board, with no game coming up next week and after a convincing win against a division rival on the road; this will be the ONLY topic until that Ravens/Pats game kicks off*.

*Unless we happen to trade for someone

The more time goes by, the more I like the move. The Pats made a conscious effort to rid the team of malcontents- why keep Moss than? Why not rid the team of all of them? Whining after a win, complaining about a contract when you're playing on one that pays you $27million over three years? Give me a break.

They have the right kind of veteran leaders in place now with Brady, Welker, Wilfork and Crumpler as well as younger players like Chung and Mayo.

I also don't know if anyone has mentioned the benefit of having a more balanced offense helping the defense-ball control, not three and out if Brady and Moss don't connect.

If this move gets the Pats back to the way the played earlier in the decade than I'm all for it.

I've never been a "sky is falling" type of fan but....

With all of the problems we have had this year and now the trade of our best receiver and one of the key parts of our offense, I'm going to go ahead and call it. Our season is done. This was by far, the STUPIDEST thing Kraft and Bill have ever done and I have to wonder if they have both lost their minds. :steamed:

Well, all of the anti-Moss people finally got what they wanted and now you'll quickly see why I said Moss was one of the most important parts of our defense. Its all downhill from here...

And for a third round pick..... Seriously, Bill??? A third round pick for the best WR in the league?

So now here we are: We have a defense that can barely make stops. Don't expect what happened on monday to become a regular occurrence anytime soon. We have an offense that is horribly inconsistent this year and now we just lost the key to making our offense better. Yeah, it doesn't get much more depressing than this unless you're a raiders fan.

Everyone's here talking about the patriot way.Didnt i remember that it was Brady that was complaining cause he didnt have that big play wr?

They're not mutually exclusive points. As I said, if the team underestimated how discontent Moss was going to be playing out his contract, that would be an issue. Clearly he has acted up in increasingly visible ways as the season has progressed. Perhaps if they had Miss Cleo on retainer, they could have seen this coming and jettisoned him prior to the season starting.

In all seriousness, though, I wouldn't have minded getting rid of Moss before the season started. I don't really get the point about Pioli, though. They made boneheaded moves both during and since his tenure in New England. They certainly have drafted better since his departure (though, in fairness, so have the Chiefs).

When your reading this thread and all the points to be made and really trying to wrap your head around what just happened I laughed out loud at work when i seen this...very good work my friend:youtheman:

I know a receiver past his prime when I see it. He has done nothing this year.

So did Art Shell. How did that turn out.

Why are people still comparing this trade to the Milloy trade? Those were two completely different situations on two completely different teams. Horrible comparison.

Jack...we find common ground!!

If any NFL team has a player that needs to be coddled, that player isn't an asset to that team...unless he's a QB.

Moss NEEDED to get attention...that has been his downfall his entire career.

How many world championship teams has he played for?

For some reason, I forget.

Despite all the cry-babies, the Pats are better off without him.

No you didn't remember that. I think you're making it up.

Why??? Is there a game going on right now????

This offense was struggling if anyone remembers before Moss got here. They are awful in the red zone.

Absolutely the team had a choice. Does everyone forget the Ty Law BB smear campaign where he tried to shoot his way out of town with a bazooka? BB managed to keep his cool and the dust settled and Law returned.
.

......and got hurt in the middle of the season......and the Patriots won the SB with Earthwind Moreland, Troy Brown and Hank Poteat in the secondary.

At least this time, we get a 3rd rounder.

Why is everyone so damn happy about draft picks!Give me proven players!I am sick of this team thinking about the future with Brady in his prime years!
