What's up with Edelman? (merged)

I'm wondering if Edelman is fully healthy yet. Seems like they're limiting him in a big way.

Probably the most likely explanation. As already mentioned, given the number of viable options they have available, no reason to force the issue. There's still 12 games to go (at a minimum), so I'm sure we'll see his contributions at some point along the way.

I think the problem for Edelman is really about formation flexibility. His strength is the quick hits and running after the catch, much like Welker and Hernandez. With those two players taking those routes, there are fewer Edelman to take, expecially coming back from injury.

Also, there really aren't many formations where we actually use 4 real WRs so far this year. Even in the empty backfield shotgun snaps, we've been lining up with Hernandez and a running back as two of the five (and Moss, Welker, Tate as the other three). This gives Brady audible options, as he can completely change gears to a single back 1 TE set with that personnel if the read calls for it. In that way, Hernandez has a little more value than Edelman when everyone is healthy.

In Edelman's favor though, is that he is a potential backup at EVERY receiver position, save Moss. He could play outside for Tate, or inside for Welker or Hernandez's slot duties. He can even knock out a few plays out of the backfield. His flexibility and the natural attrition of a long season will get him snaps. Right now we just have better options, which is a good problem to have.

Finally, the Bam Childress comparison isn't really fair, since Edelman has already had some productive regular season games in his career.

he simply had a false start. it happens even to the best.

this is no indicator of his ability except if he does it every time he's out there.

He has a lingering high ankle sprain. Those are hard to bounce back from if you're not careful.
That's what I was thinking. If he was fully healthy, I think he'd be on the field a lot more than he is. He's just not getting the snaps right now.

What happened to Edelman?

Where is Edelman? Anybody know what is up with Edelman? We now see Welker and Woodhead and Tate, but no Edelman or Price. I understand Price is inactive due to his ankle and being a rookie in a new system, but I thought Edelman would show up a lot more.

Another Bam Childress? He kicked butt in the preseason, but seems like he's hardly touched the ball in the regular season.

Julian is definitely deep in the doghouse. The way Tom looked at him, and the way Billy O'Brien sneered at him. He's in the house for sure. His body language speaks volumes.

Exactly. The 4th WR on any healthy team is going to get limited opportunities, particularly on a team that has multiple TE looks with a hybrid Cooley/Clark guy. Having a talented, cheap, non-troublemaker guy that doesn't get many reps is a sign of great depth. That depth typically comes into play as the season wears (literally) on.

That being said, if Edelman is active I would rather see him back on punt returns as opposed to Welker.

And what's up with Hoyer as well. Hoyer looked pretty good in the pre-season as well, but it seems like he's hardly touched the ball in the regular season.

Edelman also didn't do much last year other than in games in which Wes Welker was sidelined with an injury.

Bam Childress had 37 catches his rookie year in the NFL ? I don't even remember that.

I think we should be patient and we will see him more

I would like to see him returning punts. Not sure why Welker is returning punts. 1. He's not 100%. 2. I'd rather he not get subjected to extra hits 3. He fumbled his first punt return of the season.

Not enough balls to go around?

some answers are too easy ... I don't understand why people make threads like this.

Injured and being eased back in. I don't care if Kraft himself is out there catching passes so long as we win.
