Patriots release special teams captain Sam Aiken
Posted by Ian Rapoport at 5:45 pm

Aiken catchThe Patriots have released Sam Aiken, a source just told me.

He was the team’s special teams captain from 2009 and a player thought to have the sixth roster spot as a receiver. This is one of the biggest surprises on cut-down day.

I first wondered if Aiken would get cut on Day 2 of camp when Patrick Chung began seeing reps as the personal protector, which was Aiken’s job in 2009. Director of player personnel Nick Caserio had said it was just to have options. That option is now the main guy on punts.

Aiken had seven catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, looking like the sixth receiver. Instead, he’s no longer on the team. Makes you wonder which receiver the Patriots will pick up… if any.

This was provided on the other thread.
Twitter / Ian R. Rapoport: RapSheet: Patriots release ...

So it's my bad. I guess I checked a different twit than or blog or what ever, and he raps a different rap on different twits.

Re: Sam Aiken Gone too

The pats seemed to be collecting a lot of special teams type players, low upside types that almost seemed to be clogging spots.

Seems like BB decide it was time for a change, and after the Rams game I am not surprised at all.

Slater is into his 3rd year. Not a vet by those standards, but he'll have learnt from the coaches.

The Secondary have all contributed on ST, they've got some experience between them on that.

Murrell? Ninko?

I've got no problem with it.

It's the Coaches job to organise it and the ST Captains job to get them working hard and watching tape.
Having an inexperienced ST Captain..will haunt this team..and there will be at least ONE major mess up with an opposing team faking a punt and making it or some other fake field goal OR some other ST play made by the opposing team that will succeed...mark my words..Get all excited about all the young ST players..but don't complain when there inexperience costs this team a game.

You could still lose your job. Who is to say that they didn't perform up to standards.. There is such a thing as the players performing up to the standards but still being outperformed..

You should learn the difference.

I'm done with you. I now understand why so many people have issues with you. Have a great day!

It's also someone gaining a job. There are only 53 jobs, everytime someone gets cut, someone else wins that job. Not to disagree with your overall point, that cheering cuts is lame, but there are many ways to look at it.

Cheering cuts is worse than lame. It's disgusting. Reality is that Aiken and Woods and Alexander did their jobs when asked of them and there were parts of their jobs that they excelled at. They just got beat out by others as you said. That happens..

Be happy for the guys who make it. Be sad for the cuts who get cut and wish them well..

Ventrone gone, already mentioned?

Re: Sam Aiken Gone too

Chung. I predicted Aiken's being cut when I began seeing Chung as personal protector and gunner. Those are Aiken's positions.

He's certainly taken over the role on the field, but as a 2nd-year player with a (presumably) major role in the defense, he'd be an unusual choice.

Is Slater out of the question?

Sure, have at it...Although I won't be losing my job anytime soon because I perform up to my work place standards

YAWN!!! If someone is happier than others if a plyer is cut; let them be! The opinion doesn't have to be yours!

Lets not forget how bad our kick off return team, and kick coverage was last year opponents routinely started at the 40 yard line and beyond last year, I dont think we will miss too many of these guys, our ST has looked pretty darn good all prreseason except for punt coverage in the rams game.

Kyle Arrignton is a beast too

Agreed.

They'll all find their way somewhere else.

Decent Special Teamers.

Aiken gets a bad rep because he had to play 3rd WR last year when he is really only good enough for a 5th WR.

Woods done a decent job at OLB and on ST but could never be a starter.

They'll be somewhere.

If not, they'll be on our shadow roster and I wish them well.

Definitely, although luckily Aiken, Woods and Alexander are vets who will probably hook on somewhere and have been around long enough to stockpile some real money if they're smart with it. Woods, especially, is a good player; I'd be shocked if he isn't on someone's roster within a week.

Are we really going to keep 6 Running Backs? Has that ever happened before?

Chung handled his own very well last year, and as I mentioned, he made a great leap this year in TC and preseason, so I expect him to perform well.

I might be as nervous for Buddy as Buddy is for Buddy. I always thought Kelley Washington was an excellent STer. is he available yet. Just because Aiken was captain don't make him Izzo.

Yes. That is my educated guess.

Burgess getting cut according to Schefter tweet.
