Green-Ellis - Why or Why Not?

For those pimping the idea of " BJGE was running with the ones!":

9. Running back rotation. In a surprise, it was third-year back BenJarvus Green-Ellis as the top runner; he played 21 of the 31 first-half snaps. Veteran Fred Taylor didn't play, and said after the game that he was aware that would be the case. The plan, Taylor said, is to feature different running backs at various points during the preseason.

And what have u seen from maroney that takes him out of JAG status? Tons of potential......has been pretty average overall.....

Why is it that people can not understand that there is a significant difference between average and replacement level? Maroney probably is an average runningback, and thats fine.

BJGE is a replacement level back. Maybe even below replacement level.

Comparing Maroney and BJGE is like saying someone who got a 70 on a test (average) is the same as someone who got a 30 (below replacement level). They're not close to the same, and there's some value to the former.

+1.

Maroney made me want to throw a rock at him yesterday. BJGE plays the series, Maroney comes in for the goaline reps. He dances and goes nowhere twice, then on 3rd down gets a 2 yard TD and acts like John Cena.

Thats funny, how with almost half of his carries in short yardage situations, Maroney still managed to have a YPC almost a full yard higher than BJGE

In fairness, Maroney came into the game when 2nd and then 3rd stringers were in there...and primarily in red zone. BJGE played against NO's best.....and whether you like the kid or not, he did a heck of a job......He hit the holes quick and alot of time tried to make something out of nothing when the OL did not block overly well for him.....which is often. I know Maroney will be primary back but will be interesting to see if BJGE sticks.;..and maybe Taylor (Fred or Chris) get the axe........I give credit to BJGE in that he is a hard runner.....blocked well in the backfield yesterday.....and gives it his all every play and from what I hear...during camp. Hope he sticks around......has a good Patriots work ethic!!!!

He went in at the same time as NO's 2nd stringer, near the end of the first half. BJGE would have had two TD's, but Maroney conveniently subbed in, when they got into the RZ.

Makes no sense. What are those values based on?

Replacement level is the level of play that you can readily get from the waiver wire or your practice squad. It can be used as a qualitative term to describe exactly that, and replacement level is also calculated in a number of statistical formulas across sports (VORP being the big one). Pretty much by definition, replacement-level isn't very good, since it represents the borderline between having a job and not having one: theoretically, it's the best player that doesn't have a job, which means he should be slightly worse than the worst player who has a job.

Why does it matter? In a formula like VORP, the analysis looks to judge a player's value, and recognizes that you can never judge value in a vacuum. You have to compare what a player gives you to what the best available alternative would give you. If you play a position where there is good talent that's freely available on the waiver wire, then it lowers your value, whereas if there's nobody competent out there to replace you, it raises your value. Basically, it corrects for scarcity.

I wouldn't call 11 carries for 34 yards a heck of a job. I like his mentality, and he runs hard, and I don't have a problem with holding onto him if he earns his keep on ST, but let's not pretend that he's even a half-decent RB.

Now go and check out the number of games where he had the most carries

Ah, yes the most carries. Lets make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Taylor missed 10 games in 09 and Morris missed 4. BJGE was kept under wraps for some reason. Maroney got all the carries by default.

All the other 09 NE RBs had a higher yard per attempt, but Maroney was the better dancer.

Who gives a rats axx what Maroney did in 07?

I wonder why that could be?

tip: it's because he's not good.

Some day, a gray, dread locked, Bob Marley looking Maroney will don the red jacket like Sam "The Bam" Cunningham.

NOT!

There's a vast middle ground between HOF and washout.

True story.

If he keeps playing like he did last night, I see no reason why he wont be among the 53.
Actually his full body of work may get him on the 53 but last night looked more like a missed opportunity than a statement from him. Did you really think he was good last night?

What are you talking about.
Did you bother to look at who WAS credited with 'starts'? Was it Faulk because we started in a sub package?
Does it really matter who is on the field the first play?

BB has clearly shown that he wishes to split carries to keep RBs fresh. That is why he has so many starting capable RBs, so that he can overcome the inevitable injuries (go back to before we drafted Maroney and look at the seasons we were down to scrubs in games.)
Maroney has consistently been the back that gets the most carries, expect for splitting them as a rookie almost evenly with Dillon.

We get it, you don't like Maroney, but why twist things if you think your argument is sound?

Neither is Maroney.................

I see no reason why he of many names should not get a few more opportunities.

We know what the dancing queen will do with his.

And thats why you have 94 posts.

.....Yeah, post count has a lot to do with intelligence. It isn't simply a function of posting a zillion times, right or wrong, articulate or gibberish.

I forgot. My apologies.
