Reactions to the Brandon Spikes Selection

Success at UF hasn't really translated in the pros for the most part. That eye-gouging incident was ugly.

I thought the eye-gouging incident was awesome. That is exactly the type of intensity you want your monster ILB to have.

Screw 40 times! Every time I saw this guy play, he was around the football. Awesome pick, Mayo should be happy and McKenzie won't be rushed.

He's the type of leader we need on this team. Mayo is too quiet. I pray Spikes can produce and earn the respect of his teammates. We'll definitely be heading in the right direction

Meyer had to light a fire under Spikes' ass to get him to be a team leader from 2007-2008, so keep praying that someone does the same to him for us.

I get giddier (is that a word?) the more tape I see of Spikes.

He does this emotional leg kick thing, like he's kicking dirt, after a huge play. I could see that becoming a well known signature move of his as he becomes a star.

a. My question isn't with THAT we picked, but WHERE. Seems to me that we could have gotten better value picking him in the 3rd or 4th round.

b. That being said, its kind of interesting now that we have BOTH McKenzie and Spikes to join with Mayo on the inside. Perhaps this might be the time to move Gary Guyton out to the OLB position. Wasn't he the fastest LB of his combine?

He's not built for the outside. His coverage abilities are excellent though. I say keep him as a third down ILB.

PFKen, my favorite poster on this site.

1. I think Spikes is just as good value as David Harris, who the Jets moved up in the 2nd round before to pick him. Harris is a stud now.

2. Guyton takes over the Roman Phifer role, the linebacker in obvious passing downs. What about Adalius, I think he definitely slides over to outside linebacker and ends up rebounding from a bad year with Belichick taking over the defense.

I love the pick and think it gives us some much needed depth at the linebacker position. He's a great leader and seems like a really nice pick for us.

Boy, that's a hell of a comparison, DKF (& thanks for the compliment). Harris is a great 4 down LB. I'm not sure Spikes, at his speed is physically capable of making the plays to stay on the field full time. Unless of course that 5 flat 40 time was caused by some injury we don't know about, or its mitigated by a great 3 cone time. I'm seeing him as a limited player because of his lack of speed. I hope I'm wrong.

I think you hit your second point right on the nose. I too expect a comeback year for AD.

Fixed it for you.

Spikes has the potential to become a difference maker on the Pats defense. Great pick.

That was my reaction to Brandon Spikes and the entire 2nd day of the Patriots 2010 NFL Draft.

Spikes brings the FIRE and intensity that this defense just didn't have last season. Just watch him, he may not run a fast 40, but he is a big mean, instinctive, football player. Those bone rattling hits over the middle, definitely pump up the team and the crowd.

Mayo is more of a lead by example, blue collar type guy. Spikes looks like the type who can light a fire. And that's a huge part of football as well. Leadership is often underrated until its gone. When we lost guys like rodney, bru, mcginest, etc. This defense was suddenly just not the same again.

Spikes is one of those players that most everybody recognized was good and fit the Pats style of defense, but we 'talked ourselves' out of it. His 40 time is too slow. He's not as good as McClain (but who is??), etc., etc.

BB looked at the film, evaluated Spikes, and may have come up with a special player. I mean just look at the effect that KG's intensity has had on the Celtics. If Spikes can bring that kind of intensity and plays well in the SILB role to boot, the Pats defense could show some real improvement!

Can I say again, that I totally love this pick? I guess I can. Great 2nd day for our Patriots.

Just 2 years ago, weren't people pi$$ing and moaning that BB didn't draft LB's early? Can we be a little confident that he liked Spikes and Cunningham enough to draft them in the 2nd????

Im soooo happy that we added Spikes to our ILB core rather than the alcoholic from USC that people wanted last year in the thumper role

another LB taken and that is absolutely ok

I was as shocked (in a bad way) as everyone else when Bill picked McCourty first, but now, after the early run on quality CBs and the very promising selections from day 2, I am as excited as ever for the season.

And to also add another 2nd next season? Obviously this will all come down to how these guys pan out over the next few years but I think it's been amazing to watch Bill work this weekend during very important draft for the team.

I'm also excited to see what moves we make with free agent veterans afterwards.
