Thinking outside the Box

Wow..... I am glad you made this post.....

I have had a feeling the pats are going to deal Meriweather too.
I would love to see the Pats draft Earl Thomas and trade Meriweather.

Thomas seems like a real playmaker. Somthing we have missed since
Rodney retired and Asanti left for Philadelphia.

+1. I don't get how Merriweather has become some kind of sacred cow of this team. He IS still improving, but is slightly overrated IMO. And he's definitely not the ideal guy you want to be running the show in the secondary.

Rodney Harrison isn't walking through that door. If BB thinks Thomas could be that kind of guy, then it makes sense.

Thomas and Merriweather together would give BB that split safety combo that he craves. Both can play the run and cover like a corner. Best of all possible worlds for BB.

Still need a pass rush, or the secondary will continue to be toast.

Because it's a dumb idea to ship Meriweather out and rely instead on a draft pick at the position, while at the same time citing the need for a playmaker when the guy you're advocating getting rid of has 9 INTs in the last two years.

Meriweather isn't going anywhere, and will continue to the the leader of the secondary.

Sounds like a terrific idea. Trade away your Pro Bowl safety for a guy who could be great or could be the next incarnation of Michael Huff.

Hopefully that pro bowl appearance will drive up his value.
I have seen enough of Merriweather to welcome a change.

Roy Williams got to the probowl with Dallas.
He couldn't cover oprah at an all you can eat buffet.

Didn't Michael Vick & Vince Young make the probowl
a couple of times?

The world wouldn't come crashing down if Sanders, Chung and McGowan were our top three safeties. I didn't say we necessarily need a better playmaker than Merriweather at S. I like him--just don't see him being the leader of the secondary at all.

BB spend a top ten pick on an ILB in 2008. Last year there were many more talented safeties and linebackers than Chung and McKenzie he could have taken. Looking at the makeup of all those guys gives some insight into what he really needs and wants on this defense.

Are you really comparing Roy Williams to Brandon Meriweather?

Or.... it could be that Gosselin is wrong about the Patriots' pick just like he usually is.

Shhhhhhh, you'll break their hearts.

I could see us taking a safety, but I think McGowan is probably the one Patriot safety on the trading block. Meriweather is a leader on this defense, Sanders is reliable, and Chung is up and coming. McGowan is inconsistent and is in the last year of his contract. BB may want an upgrade.

Do you think Vick or Youngs value went up because of a few probowl appearances? Why would it drive up Merriweathers value? This trade isn't happening.
