Player Signing Pats to sign Torry Holt

Love the signing. Would have preferred Branch and possibly Curtis, but Branch is under contract and Curtis might not be 100%.

LOL, like everyone else, im not enamured with this signing....but then again, we do need serious help at wr, and the chances that a rookie helps us out are about 5%

so i guess hopefully it pans out

Edelman did not pick up the system as well as you may think, there were numerous plays that he lined up the wrong position and had to be corrected or he ran the wrong route that Brady had expected. Yes he is a good player, but he is still developing. He cannot be counted on as the #2 WR (second most productive), whatever you want to say.

The guy was learning the system. Of course he would have some mistakes. He still played very well filling in for Welker when he was out.

Neither you nor I know for sure if he can or cannot fill in the role. He could have spent the entire offseason here working with the staff studying film, working on routes, and doing drills. He could exponentially more advanced in his understanding of the playbook and his role than he was last year.

To dismiss the guy as not being able to fill a #2 position at this point is a little silly.

Besides, if Holt can catch over 50 ball for over 700 yards with David Garrard throwing to him, he could be an excellent #2 with Brady throwing to him.

Dont be counting on Welker being back week 1. He tore his ACL in late December, in most and almost all cases they take more than 8 months to fully heal.
The Braylon Edwards schedule gets him back for Week 1 (Edwards had surgery a month earlier than Welker and was back for preseason game one). I wouldn't say I'm COUNTING on it but I am expecting it.

Dynasty, if Wes Welker is a 9.5 out of 10,and say Edelman is an 8, why do we need to get another slot WR. Edelmans no Welker, but he'll be pretty good.

Last year our top WRs were: Moss, Welker, Edelman and Aiken

As of now we have: Moss, Edlelman, Holt and Aiken for this year as of week 1

Welker>Holt, Aiken really isnt an NFL WR. He is strictly a ST guy.

They are still a quality WR short

If he's on the schedule, I'd almost prefer they PUP him for six weeks. Let Edelman get more experience, plus Tate or any rookies, then let Welker be a week seven shot in the arm for the last two thirds of the season. We know Brady and Welker can get on the same page quickly.

When was Welker IRed and deemed out for the year ?

True. Plus Welker is a hell of a lot more intense and there's definitely a significant mental aspect to these types of rehabilitations.

Braylon Edwards is one particular case, people have different bodies. It would be idiotic to "expect" Welker back for week 1.

They may choose to do that, it could be fine for a variety of reasons (Edelman experience, reducing Welker wear and tear, letting Welker get more confidence in practice) but I just have a problem with the concept that Welker has no chance to be back Week 1. I think he likely will be PUPed but I think he probably could play Week 1 if he really had to. But it's a long season and managing the roster by PUPing him could be a safe way to play it.

I edited my post and said as of week 1. You cannot count on Welker being back for any point in the season. He probably will, but you just cant assume he will be and be as productive as hes been

You declared him out for the year. THAT is idiotic.

I may be a touch overly optimistic but it's realistic. Rehabs get better all the time, Welker is a crazy hard worker and he has Brady to lean on.

Question -- which do you think is a better 3WR set,

Moss XXXXX Welker Aiken

or

Moss XXXXX Edelman/Tate Holt

??

IMO, it's closer than most would think. You might have altogether more raw ability on the field in the former, but the defense can freely roll away from Aiken's side, and pretty much neutralize Moss.

In the latter, you won't get as much production out of the slot, but Moss won't be blanketed quite as consistently.

You're still trying to compare Welker and Holt, and that just doesn't work.

They might both be receivers, but Light and Koppen are both o-linemen, and you wouldn't compare them.

Moss-Edelman-Holt. Where does this rank in the AFC?

1. Colts (Wayne-Clark-Garcon-Collie-Gonzalez-holy crap)
2. Bengals (Bryant-Ochocinco-?)
3. Pats

Be thankful for what we have. And Welker will return eventually.

Yeah, this thread has been WAY out thought.

Holt is an upgrade over Aiken. If Tate beats him out, all the better but this gives us a better WR across from Moss.

End of discussion.

-- separate thread . . . sucks that Welker might miss some of the season, hopefully Edelman can do a good job until Welker returns.

I predict Aiken goes back to being strictly a ST guy. He's a WR like Larry Izzo is a linebacker; in other words, only in emergency.

On one side you had, and still have Moss. In the slot you had, and still have the combination of Welker and Edelman.

On the other side you had Galloway and whomever last year. This year you have Holt.

Beyond Holt you have someone from the group of Tate, Patten, maybe another free agent, and possibly a draftee.

Welker and Holt play different positions, and Aiken will not be part of the picture at WR.

Does anyone think the BB signed Holt, not just for depth but to be a WR that a newly drafted rookie can look up to and learn the pro game?

Can you say Dez Bryant who to me as a troubled kid in terms of dedication, would be the type of guy that Holt can teach the good fundamentals of the game to?

If Bryant lasts until 22 that is

Moss is not that type of guy IMO, Holt could be

I am not comparing them as WR's as they have different styles, I am comparing them for the production that they can bring. When doing that Welker greatly out does Holt.

At the end of last season fans stressed the need of a #3 WR. The Patriots did address that with the signing of Holt because Holt is a solid #3 WR at this point in his career. With the loss of Welker that adds another need to the WR position. The Patriots have not addressed the loss of Welker to this point. For the people that say he is coming back during the year so we shouldnt worry about that. Who is to say that he comes back and is as effective as he was last year, look at Brady and how he first came back.

Agreed.

Also, Holt is versatile -- if Tate can earn serious playing time at split end, Holt could very easily move inside and play out of the slot. In fact, at this point in his career, that's probably what would fit his remaining skill set best.

That said, I don't expect that much out of Tate next year.
