Player Signing Pats to sign Torry Holt

We now have two starting receivers that are both 33 (Moss and Holt). We have two kids at the slot and at #4 (Edelman and Tate). We have a kid and an 35 year old vet competing for #5 or for #4 if Tate doesn't cut it (Stanback and Patten). We even have an all-pro who will likely be on the PUP list, and who might be back for the last half of the season.

Moss
Holt
Edelman (slot)
Tate (returner)
Stanback (#3 QB)
Welker (PUP)
Patten (trairning camp insurance)

What's not to like?

Mg, do you think that's good enough to remove WR from the first four picks? I think you could say so now.

Good signing in my opinion. Nice route runner, good hands, and good attitude.

This is Bill's M.O. The same with signing Damione Lewis. Before the draft he likes to have a "complete" roster. This allows for better manuevering during the draft. Besides, Holt can still make plays. For years people complained about having an old and slow defense. In order to transition to a younger defense Bill has used FA more for offense. We now have an older veteran offense and a young versatile defense.

vets rookies and jags this is the pats.

i know it dose not look like the best WR core in the NFL but it's not to bad. for me the pats do not have to reach. for a WR in the draft. they can use most of the picks on defense.

you know this better. then me that the pats will not win many games if brady has to force the ball. to put points on the bord. or if BB has to go for every 4th and 2. the pats need defense. IMO brady, now has a nuff to work with.

If the contract is cheap and he's healthy I think it's a good signing, I made reference to Holt earlier this offseason.
I know that he was having some knee issues, and then joined The Jags last year where he was the #2 WR on a Run 1st team.

Something tells me that he wasn't just a dumb WR that just happened to part part of one of the best offenses ever, if he's a smart guy I would think he could be of use.......we'll see..

Hope this ends up better than the Galloway signing

Exactly.

Did we give anything up for this trade? Thats what is really important to me. I like the signing but its only short term, I'm hoping we didn't give up any picks on the draft though.

nope, he was an UFA. Jags get nothing.

It's a FA signing, no picks.

Alright, Torry Holt. This guy has averaged over 700 yards the past 2 seasons. So long as he hasn't fallen off the proverbial cliff, he should be a nice boost to the Pats receiver corps as a #2/#3 type guy.

PS Schefter tweets that Clayton confirmed it's a 1 year deal, worth up to 1.7M (after he meets escalators).

PS Irving Fryar had two of his best years at age 34+35. Tom Brady might just be what Holt needs to rejuvenate his career.

For some reason I thought Holt was ancient...38 or 39 yo...if he's 34yo...I kinda like this signing. He stays healthy and has been one of the most durable receivers in the last 10 years.

This gives me a reason to insert the picture of Torry Holt's finger....

If you're asking whether I want us to draft a WR in the first four picks, then the answer is no. I want us to draft a CB, DE, and two linebackers, and trade for or sign a tight end.

However, there are certainly receivers in the first two rounds that Belichick may pick beacuse of the value they provide. For example, I suspect that we wouldn't pass on Thomas 44.

In the end, the situation is straightforward. We just signed our #2 WR. We could sign a developmental player, or not.

If he can give us 35 to 50 catches at 600 to 800 yards I think that would be huge for the offense. If not, oh well I guess.

Okay pickup with reasonable compensation. Good as veteran insurance.

I think it's a good pickup. I've always liked his passion. He's smart, runs good routs, and has great hands.

I wonder what number he will wear. My guess is 18

Not all that likely, but if Holt and Moss can last 3-4 more years here we could have the 2nd and 3rd all time leaders in rec yards on our roster at some point.

Man I sure hope Dez Bryant slides to #22. Just curious, who would you all prefer. Holt, or Kevin Curtis?

I think this is being hugely understated - he caught 50+ balls for 700+ yards last year in a run-first offense. He's a huge upgrade over Sam Aiken.

I like the signing a lot.

I have to hope you're right (the hugely understated part).
