So, I was on lunch break today, and I emailed the following to a bunch of buddies of mine. I'd be very interested if any of you have your certain favorites at various positions and why. This is what I sent some football friends of mine today:

"Here is my list of two players, at each position (in most cases), that I would love it if the Patriots drafted.

I'm not always going to include the best players that everybody knows, so there will be many left off this list. Also, I'm only going to do positions, at which we need help.

RB: Ryan Mathews, Fres. St., (Every Down Back, and there aren't a lot of those in this draft.)
: Ben Tate, Auburn, (Every Down Back)
* I don't want Jahvid Best and all his concussions.

TE: Dennis Pitta, BYU, (GREAT hands, and we haven't had a TE like that who can also block, in a long time. Downside would be he's already 25, because he did one of those 2 year missions).
: Jimmy Graham, Miami, (Former basketball player with huge upside. He may go earlier than he should because he's a freak athlete.)

WR: Taylor Price, (Runs crisp routes, and Brady would love this guy)
: Emmanuel Sanders, SMU, (This is one of those guys who just caught my eye at the combine. He seemed really sudden, quick, and like he would be hard to cover).
* Andre Roberts of the Citadel, and Eric Decker of MN might be good picks too. These four players would be instant favorites of Tom Brady and will significantly help the team. If we got any two of these guys, our future is bright!

DE: Daniel Te'o Nesheim (This guy just stood out to me when I watched him at the combine)
* This along with OLB is their biggest need position, and yet for both I only list one each player. There are a lot of interchangeable players. I'm sure the team did their homework, and hopefully we're happy with their picks.

P : Zolten Mesko, MICH (This guy is going to be an All Pro punter in the NFL, and I would not be surprised if we grabbed him in Round 4, depending on who else is available).
: Matt Dodge

CB : Devin McCourty, Rutgers
Kareem Jackson, 'Bama
* These two are the 5th or 6th rated overall DBs, but I saw film on both, and they stood out to me. Earl Thomas is a safety from Texas that it would not surprise me if the Pats took him in the first round. He's one of those playmaker types, that BB loves.

C: Maurkice Pouncey, FL
: Matt Tennant, BC
* Pouncey would have to be drafted with their first pick, and would give the Pats a stud C for years, to go along with now a few other stud, young, offensive linemen. He's versitile, in that he can also play G, and BB loves that. Matt Tennant went to Offensive Linement University, Boston College, and can also play guard. He'd be a 4th round or later pick. I listened to an intereview he gave on Sirius and he's HIGHLY impressive, and highly intelligent. A real leader type.

ILB: Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri, to me is one that I would rate a can't miss player. He'd play next to Mayo for the next decade, at the MIKE LB spot, in the 3-4. He played in a 4-3 in college so can do both, when they switch. He's also a real leader, but a bit of a loud mouth. He'd yell back there like Rodney use to do. He produced on the field big time. Some teams supposedly took him of their draft board because of all his yapping.
: Sean Lee, Penn St., is another LEADER, and would also play th MIKE in a 3-4. He is really smart.

OLB: Brandon Graham, MICH. I watched film on this guy, and want him on our team really bad. He has a non-stop motor, and overpowers giant Olinemen. He has a lot of moves, and really uses his leverage. The risk on him is that he's not a prototypically sized OLB, and wasn't used much in coverage. He also has short arms, and some say he'll be engulfed in the pros. When you watch him dominate out there, you almost have to throw all that aside and draft the guy. I envision him causing so much havoc out there that the rest of the D-Line gets better, as do the DBs because the QB won't have all day to through, as was the case last year.
* This is their biggest need position, and yet I can't list another that I say "get this guy". All have risk. I will say that the guy I think they have their eye on is Sergio Kindle, TX, if I'm reading the tea leaves right.

* I just want to add that if ILB McKenzie, who was out all last year turns into a player, then they won't need either of these guys. The question is do they stay true to their board? It's impossible to know what McKenzie will bring, but Guyton was horrible at that spot last year.

I did this off the top of my head, so I'm sure I forgot some of my favorites. If I think about them before draft day, I'll add them."

I'd love any of your favorites. Mine are based on watching them play, looking at film of them, reading my draft guides, and listening to interviews of them on Sirius. I'm into it big time this year simply because we have 4 picks in the first two rounds.

RB: LOVE Dexter McCluster and a late day 3 sleeper Brandon Minor
WR: Day 3 prospects Marcus Easley and David Gettis both have a good combo of size and speed
TE: Rob Gronkowski, Nate Byham
OL: Kyle Calloway, Jared Veldheer
DL: Jared Odrick, Tyson Alualu
OLB: Austen Lane, Brandon Lang both great mid day 2 value
DB: A.J. Jefferson the combine MVP for me and my one sweet dream slide Eric Berry

Off the top of your head?!? Wow, off the top of my head I can barely recall what I had for breakfast! Great post, but I am a simpleton on my best days

I like Kindle, Hughes or Graham at #22..................... Beyond that I just watch and enjoy the show. Great post, Bostonian1962!

RB - I am with you Matthews and Tate - both should be good between the tackle runners
WR - Bryant and Tate - Tate knows the system and has some skill and Dez is pretty much the consensus best WR and he may be falling into our area of the first
DE - Odrick - He clearly has the physical attributtes some questions about whether the actuall skill set fits - only one here as most of the DEs I have been looking at would be OLBs for us
OLB - Kindle and Paul - Both clearly have the physical attributtes while one may be too raw and the other may be to finnesse. To me it is about the physical fit the rest will be coached and on that note Paul has a very blank slate and could be coached into a perfect 3-4 OLB (if he is fluid enough which people think he is but I thought he looked a little stiff at the combine).
TE - I like any of the top four or five just not in the first round - I think there are a bunch of good TEs and we should be able to find a few later in the fourth or even 6th.

7th round/UDFA - QB Rusty Smith or Levi Brown
1st Round - RB - Spiller or Mathews
2nd round - WR - Tate or Willams (USC)
6th round - WR - Long or Decker
6th round - TE - Peek or Dray
7th round - OT - Marenilli or Ulatoski
1st round - NT - Mt. Cody or Cam Thomas
2nd Round -DE - Aulaha or Odrick
1st round - OLB/DE - Dunlap or Sapp
1st Round - S - Earl Thomas or Berry
1st Round - CB - Kareem Jackson or Wilson

RB- Toby Gerhart or Ben Tate
WR- Dez Bryant or Golden Tate
OLB- Brandon Graham or Jerry Hughes
DE-Jared Odrick or Austin Lane
TE-Tony Moeaki or Dennis Pitta

RB - CJ Spiller and Montario Hardesty
WR - Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams
TE - Rob Gronkowski and Jermaine Gresham
QB - Jarrett Brown and Ryan Perriloux
OT - Charles Brown and Bryan Bulaga
OG/C - Maurkice Pouncey

DE/OLB - Greg Hardy and Ricky Sapp and Derrick Morgan
ILB - Rolando McClain
CB - Patrick Robinson and Chris Hawkins
DL - Alex Carrington and Ndamukong Suh
S - Eric Berry and Earl Thomas

#22 Hughes or Pouncy. Hopefully either with a trade down. Willing to pass altogether for a sweet trade back that nets another 2, 3 and a 4/5

Second round 3 of depending on 22:

Misi- must have passrusher if we take Pouncy
Williams - because he's polished
Alualu - because we need a DE
Valdheer - to make Kaczur a backup at best
Asamoah - must take G if we don't take Pouncy and Mankins insurance

Third & fourth round also depending:

Gerhard - might be interesting as a combo FB/RB
Moeaki or
Pitta or both if we could swing it
Tennant C/G - if we don't take Pouncy or as Koppen's understudy and backup
Roberts or
White
I really want one of these two. Even if we take Williams in the second. If not I want them both. Or the Twig back.

Fifth through Seventh :

Sanders WR if we whiff on Roberts and/or White
Hawley C/G if we don't take Tennant
MacFadden if Bill has to have another CB
Mesko P
Miller RB to give Lawfirm a run for his money and for the PS
Long WR - for the PS
Deaderick DE - worth a flyer
Harewood OT - worth a flyer
Hiller QB - yet another guy who played in Michigan and has his ACL behind him. #3 or PS

That's my to pick from wish list. Too hard to figure out what's doable not knowing about draft day trades. But I really think this draft is too deep to trade up and too loaded with solid contributors and potential starters if you trade back.

I've kind of soured on Kindle. Not interested in Odrick. Wouldn't risk anything worthwhile on Bryant. Intrigued by Graham but not at the price. If Bill prefers another Tate to Williams I could live with it as long as it's in the second.

I've probably doomed all these guys...

So to recap by position

C - Pouncy Tennant/Hawley
G - Pouncy/Asamoah/Tennant/Hawley
T - Valdheer...and a flyer on Harewood
WR - Williams Roberts/White/Sanders/Long
TE - Pitta Moeaki
RB - Gerhart Miller (if in fact Bill wants one)
QB - Hiller in the 7th ahead of as an UDFA for the PS and to keep Hoyer honest

DE - Alualu
DT - I'm OK with what we got unless we take a flyer on Deaderick
OLB - Hughes Misi
ILB I'm OK with what we got
S - I'm good here too
CB - I'm OK here unless Bill isn't then MacFadden around the 4th

ST - Zoltan the punter and I'll be happy

I'm not really taking scheme into account. I just like these players a lot. I may cheat and list more than two on some of these. Sorry! :)

WR: Andre Roberts Scott Long, Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders
RB: Deji Karim, Montario Hardesty, Keiland Williams, Jahvid Best
FB: John Conner
TE: Jermaine Gresham, Scott Sicko, Mike Hoomanawanui, Clay Harbor

OG: Marshall Newhouse, Shawn Lauvao, John Jerry
C: Ted Larsen, Phil Costa, Maurkice Pouncey

DT: Ndamukong Suh, Terrence Cody, Linval Joseph, Al Woods
DE: Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Everson Griffen, Tyson Alualu, George Johnson
OLB: Koa Misi, Eric Norwood, Jerry Hughes, Daryl Washington, AJ Edds

FS: Eric Berry, Jeromy Miles
CB: Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Walter Thurmond III, Earl Thomas, Devin McCourty

Both would have to be selected at 22, I do like Damian Williams as well, who could be had with one of our seconds, no Greg Jennings for me this year

OLB (weakside)
Brandon Graham
Sergio Kindle
Again, both would need to be selected at 22. Love Graham's passion for the game. I really don't see this guy being a bust, he loves football way too much. Kindle reminds me of Colvin (pre-injury). If someone said I HAD to guess who we'll take in the first I'd guess Kindle.

OLB (strongside)
Carlos Dunlap
Austen Lane
LOVE both these guys. Dunlap might be there at 44, or could be there if we trade back with 22. Obviously he has off-field concerns, but if he checks out then we finally have the Willie clone we've needed for the last few years. Lane would be amazing value, as we could most likely get him at 53. I didn't find much tape on this guy, but what I did see I was VERY impressed by.

DE
Tyson Alualu
Corey Wooton
Both guys would represent solid value in the second round. I believe Alualu could start over Wright towards the end of the year. Alualu reminds me of Patriots players of old, somewhat of an over-achiever, with an insane motor. Wooton obviously has injury concerns. I know some have had him at olb, I just don't know if he has the speed. I really do think he could play on the line, but would need to bulk up a bit. He's a bit of a project to me.

These are really the only positions I've done extensive research on through the last few months, as they represent the greatest needs to me. (I do like Ryan Matthews though)

CB: Kareem Kackson and Dominique Franks
WR: Mardy Gilyard and Andre Rogers
ILB: McClain and nobody
OLB: Corey Wootton and Daniel Te'o Nesheim
TE: Jermaine Gresham and Aaron Hernandez
DE: Linval Joseph and Geno Atkins
C/OG: Ted Larsen and Kurtis Gregory
RB: Montario Hardesty and Charles Scott for pass pro

QB Tim Hiller, 1a Colt McCoy, 1b

RB Jonathan Dwyer, 1a LeGarrette Blount, 1b

FB Rashawn Jackson, 1a Cory Jackson, 1b

WR Arrelious Benn, 1a Mardy Gilyard, 1b

TE Dennis Pitta, 1a Nate Byham, 1b

Bakes, I almost added a category for Faulk's eventual replacement, because like you I love Dexter McCluster. He would be a real weapon out there. I'm also intriqued with A.J. Jefferson, but am wondering why he isn't more highly rated. As for Veldheer, he intrigues me alot, but short arms for an offensive linemen is usually a huge negative for OLMen more than any other position. I'd be happy if they got him though. Gronkowski is somebody I'd pass on. A back injury at such a young age to me means, let me pick somebody else. I wonder if the rumor of a narrowing spine is also true. I'd hate to spend a second rounder on somebody that's forced to retire if the worse case played out. Finally, word was that he was well enough to play after a while last year, and many questioned how much he really loves football. Usually, that is a non-starter for BB. Great list though! Thanks.

Nice list Ochmed. Interesting note is that Matt Tennant of BC had perhaps his best game of the year against Cam Thomas, according to Tennant this weekend on Sirius. I still like Cam Thomas though. Overall, I love your list.

Its hard to say players that are my favorite at each position VS the players who will fit the scheme. After listening to BB press conf last week i felt he shed a lot of light on their drafting process. They look for players with similar skill set and mesurables at each position. BB gave an example of "we cant have 1 Gaurd who can pull really well and the other one cant." Thus we I was looking at ALL of our draft DB draft picks within the past 10 years or so since BB took over reigns. Shockingly nearly all the picks from the likes of Hakim Akbar, Mike Richardson, Wheately, Dexter Reid, Asante etc all of the same mesurables, similar styles and combine numbers. Most groan when we dont pick a 6'2 DB but BB obviously perfers having similar players bc as he said it's easier to coach when you have players with similar skill sets. Thus I dont think the pats would draft certain players that i like ala Jahvid Best, Brandon Graham. ANyways....based off of what likely fit pats schemes. (it's easier to perdict Pats type players on D as opposed to Offense, since it seems a lot of our offensive holes lately have been filled via FA)

RB: Matthews, Tate, Hardesty
WR: D.Williams, D.Bryant, D.Thomas (cant fig if I like this guy or if he also is a Pats target)
OL: Pouncey, T. Williams, K.Calloway
DE: Dunlap, Hardy?, Wooten, G.Sevelie
OLB: Kindle, Sapp, K.Misi
ILB: McClain, Weatherspoon, Norwood, Spikes
CB: E.Thomas, K.Wilson, McCourty, K.Jackson,
S: K.McCarthy

I did this with the Pats draft picks/needs in mind. For example, I LOVE Sam Bradford, but I'd doubt they'd trade up to the #1 pick for him.

QB: Jarrett Brown, Zac Robinson
RB: Jahvid Best, James Starks
WR: Blair White, Scott Long
TE: Aaron Hernandez, Dennis Pitta
OT: Jason Fox, Kyle Calloway
G/C: Mike Johnson, Eric Olsen
DE: Linval Joseph, Al Woods
NT: Dan Williams, Torrel Troup
OLB: Everson Griffen, Ricky Sapp
ILB: Donald Butler, AJ Edds
CB: Devin McCourty, Alterraun Verner
S: Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman

After reading 2 pages of favorites in this thread, one thing seems very apparent suddenly, very, very few consensus binkys. And here we are basicly with less than 3 days till round 1............... I love it!

Just top two? Sweet!

QB: Bradford, McCoy (provided he learns to just take the damn needle)
HB: Matthews, McCluster
FB: Manase Tonga, Toby Gerhart
SE: Dez Bryant, Damian Williams
FL: Golden Tate, Andre Roberts
Slot: Mardy Gillyard, Jordan Shipley
TE: Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham
T: Bulaga, Okung
G: No idea
C: Pouncey, Tennant
ATH: Tim Tebow

N: Mt. Cody, Dan Williams
DE: Ndamukong Suh, Jared Odrick
Joker: Jerry Hughes, Ricky Sapp
Will: Sean Lee, Spooner (regardless of non-fit)
Mike: Rolando McClain, Eric Norwood
Sam: Koa Misi, Everson Griffen
FS: Eric Berry, Earl Thomas
SS: Larry Asante, Taylor Mays
CB: Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson

P: Zoltan Mesko, Some Aussie
