I have a few questions about when we drafted Mayo.

1) Did anyone ever predict that we would take Mayo at #10 (or #7)? Is there an official record of this?

2) Was it ever documented that the Pats visited him for a workout or he came to Gillette for a workout prior to the draft?

3) If there is no record, then subsequently who was it that gave him a workout? Was it an "anonymous" member of the scouting staff?

Thanks in advance.

I believe Michael Holley may have called it on his radio show like the day before the draft. Other than that I don't know.

other than that, it seemed to me that it was really a suprise two days b4 the draft.......

Box. Impressive links. You really get into these challenges. I'd not vote you out if you were on my tribe...

Pretty sure he had a visit to Gillette and I think I remember Don Banks and Pat Kirwan got the pick right but only in the last week leading up to the draft.

I've been camped out in the draft forum, it's rare to find a prospect who flies completely under the radar over there, almost always you'll find someone has noticed and mentioned them at least once. First round picks are usually predigested by the time the draft rolls around. Edelman was discussed prior to NE drafting him last year, nosy Parkers we are thereabouts.

Thanks all. The reason I asked was because I wanted to get an idea of how we went about our business in terms of scouting and working out potential players for such a high pick. I honestly think we feinted for Gholston and got the Jets to bite.

I don't think we ever wined and dined Mayo- or at least was not aware of it.

For the only time in history, I was all over the 2008 Pats draft.

- Had the Pats going after Mayo
- Saints trading up from 10 to 7 to get Ellis (though I thought the Pats would move again to 14 with the Bears trading up to get Clady. Betcha the Bears wish I was right on that one)
- Pats drafting CBs in the 2nd and 4th rounds, including one from Auburn, and an OLB in the 3rd (got the wrong Auburn CB though...though I don't believe there was a "right" Auburn CB in that draft)
- Pats drafting O'Connell, but about 3 rounds later. Not really proud of this one though.

Given my overall track record on predictions hovering somewhere around the 0% range, even getting this close was a minor miracle for me.

Mayo was a predraft visit to Gillette. I believe you need to go back to Ty Warren to find a player NE drafted first overall without bringing him in for a visit - which is why the draft forum regulars watch the visit reports closely.

Yes, I compiled a pre-draft 2008 Contact list, and NE's coaches had a private visit with Jarod

Don Banks predicted it a couple of days before the draft.

Yep, for some reason Holley is usually given credit for the "scoop" of repeating the exact prediction Banks made the day before.

Impressive stuff!

Yes indeed. Saw one person actually had us taking Crable and a couple had Wheatley. Other than that not one person had anyone else the Patriots actually picked.

Pretty normal then. They don't call him Football's Machiavelli for nothing.

I also had O'Connell. Would rather have been wrong about that one.

It is interesting looking back at these types of threads. I highly recommend people taking a guess in this year's edition to utterly destroy their draft credentials for years to come.

Ooops. Missed that one sorry.

I chose the correct user name for this enterprise.

The other thing that is interesting are the Felger-like comments made after the draft by the local pundits. I think it was Borges who slammed the Patriots for not trading up to take Vernon Gholston. Everyone was bemoaning the fact that the Patriots missed out on Gholston. I wish I could get in the way-back machine and see what The Triumvirate of Douchbaggery (Felger Callahan and Borges) wrote exactly.
