Re: Schefter: Falcons reach agreement with CB Dunta Robinson - 6 yrs, $57M ($25.5 GTD

Bodden may be the second best CB free agent, but he isn't nearly as valued as Robinson who at his best is an elite CB. Bodden probably wont get close to what Robinson got.

Also, the Pats gave Wilfork an 18 million signing bonus and made him the second highest paid DT in the league. Two weeks ago, no one thought the Pats would do that either. Who knows if the Pats will pay for Bodden even at $7-8 million a year. You can't argue if they sign Bodden to that, it will piss off Vince anymore.

Also, if they do sign Bodden and if they structure it so a large portion of the money hits this year in an uncapped year, why do we care? If it doesn't screw up future caps too much or block the Pats' internal budge, it is Kraft's money. People were crying that Kraft is too cheap and now people are complaining that Bodden costs too much.

BTW, reports were that Bodden was looking for about $8 million a year before free agency began. Robinson's contract probably will have little bearing on his asking price other than justify he is asking for the right ballpark.

I expect Bodden to get close $8M to $9M a year including bonus. The question is whether the patriots are willing to pay.

Bodden, the patriots and other bidders have seen what Rolle and Robinson received. The market has been set.

Wasn't Atlanta one of the three or four teams whom Bodden was rumored to be talking to?

I don't think this deal necessarily changes things enough to put Bodden out of our price range, unless Bodden is already demanding that kind of money and Atlanta chose to go with Robinson instead.

Hopefully the pats led bodden walk. I think with wilhite, wheatley, springs and butler we're good. If someone would teach wilhite to LOOK for the ball he'd be markedly improved. Butler is a budding superstar if they give him some playing time.

So no big contract for bodden, but likely a 3rd supp. pick in next year's draft.

I agree. Keels will argue that LB had a better year than Robinson in 2009. That may drive up the market for Bodden's services- especially for those teams who are high on Robinson.

True. I do think that they want Bodden. The question is what does the market say and how temping the dollars will be for him to go elsewhere. Lets hope the Pats are in the ballpark.

Agreed. I think you can do up to 50% in the first year. However, I don't think the Pats will operate like this. They will still pay the player on what value they are to the system.

BTW, reports were that Bodden was looking for about $8 million a year before free agency began. Robinson's contract probably will have little bearing on his asking price other than justify he is asking for the right ballpark.

Hadn't heard anything about what Bodden is asking for. You have a link to the $8m a year rumor?

Gut feel- someone will give Bodden $15m guaranteed for a 4-year deal @ $7m annual average.

im also of hte group that bodden is really not that necessary...

he played pretty well last year, but was nowhere near elite...i would not like paying him more than about 6 mil/year, especially with springs and all the young guys waiting at the helm....

would love to be proven wrong about bodden though if anyone has stats

If they wouldn't pay $8M to a far better player in Boldin, I don't know why they'd pay it to Bodden.

The stats that I've seen on the guy are pretty impressive. QB's have a QB Rating of 59.3 when throwing at Bodden, 50% completion percentage, 4 TD's to 5 INT's and 5.7 yards per attempt.

ProFootballFocus.com - By Position

I was very impressed with Bodden's coverage myself before ever finding the stats out. He's not really a ballhawk (5 INT's is solid, but 3 came from Sanchez in same game and they were mostly gift wrapped) but I think he's a very good cover corner and a legit #1 CB.

I'd love to re-sign him as I think the secondary would be mostly set, with the exception of a few tweaks for years with Bodden/Butler/Meriweather/Chung back there as the core. Little worried with all the overpaying going on in free agency, though.

If they wouldn't pay $8M to a far better player in Boldin, I don't know why they'd pay it to Bodden.

The reason why the Pats didn't want to pay Boldin is probably because of his injury history, playing style, and age. The guy has chronic hamstring injuries among other injuries, he is hitting 30, and he plays with reckless abandonment. It is very conceivable that Boldin's career could be over within 2-3 years, maybe less. The Pats didn't want to pay Boldin because there are a lot of risk and question marks long term because of his injury history. If Boldin didn't have his injury history, the Pats probably wouldn't think twice about paying him.

It was a stupid move not to get Boldin for what was being asked, if the only issue was the contract.

I'm not as sure that this puts the Pats out of the mix for Bodden. What did we offer Assante? Something in this range, right? And there are those around here who've asserted that Bodden is at least as capable. Who knows if that's true, but the point is, none of us know if BB perhaps doesn't feel the same way himself.

Well, there goes Bodden. Robinson just set the value for CBs this offseason, and it's a stupidly high one.
