After teasing Dungy for destroying the Colts in the 2004 playoffs, Rodney revealed that in that game, Belichick had him play corner and Ty Law play strong safety, which is why Peyton Manning was so confused.

I love having Rodney, Bruschi, and McGinest in the media now; you hear things that never would have been revealed otherwise.

a-ah! those nice days.

But please Rodney...don't reveal too much...

Do you think BB has such confusing D schemes with the way our current D has been shaping up? I get annoyed when rookie QBs get away causually with so many completions like what's been happening for the last three seaons. (That's just a beer guzzling fan's gut reaction with zero knowledge of stats or the schemes. )

I think that was noted by the NFL Films commentator in the DVDs.

Rodney is the best thing that has happened to NBC pre-game show or any pre-game show in general. He's the only guy that isn't afraid to say what's on his mind and I love it! I tune in every week to see what he thinks about the current events in the NFL. Specifically, I laughed when he flat out said, "cut Derek Anderson."

On Derek Anderson:

He'd have a better QB rating if he never completed ANY of his passes.

Frightening stat, no?

I loved it when he said that and loved it even more when Dungy agreed with him and said he and Manning were confused when he and Ty Law switched places (and even though I can't stand Tony Dungy, I was surprised [and thought it was somewhat gentlemanly] that he didn't remind Rodney that two years later the Colts got their revenge by kicking the Pats' butt in the AFC Championship game.).

I remember they showed a replay of that during the 2004 game so it's not a new revelation.

That happened during the game, and was commented on during the game and extensively afterward.

It was typically in the pre-snap alignment - it wasn't that Rodney trotted out at LCB and Law in the deep defensive backfield. They tended to swap while Manning was flapping his arms calling the play, and it changed the nature of the defense.

It was also worked more subtly in the coverage routes, by changing where the safety and corner worked, even from their more normal positions.

During that period, Bill was working lots of DB's in multiple roles - Wilson, Gay, Hawkins, etc. It only worked well with those two based on the versatility and experience of those two players. Note that he tried that with Meriweather as a rookie, and has backed off with him.

That was a great secondary for BB to work his magic. The young secondary eerily reminds me of that 2004 backfield and I hope the results are similar.
