This seems a bit obvious but the use of "Active PUP" seems like it has increased in the last few years. In some ways it just is a designation for those players that the team knows will not practice for a bit of time, going into training camp. That does make sense, but I do not believe there is a rule that to be on RESERVE PUP and out for the first 6 weeks etc. one does not HAVE TO be on Active PUP first. A player CAN NOT have practiced to be put on Reserve PUP, but what if there was a player that the team THOUGHT was going to be OK and did not practice the first few days and then continued NOT to practice throughout camp. Wouldn't he still be eligible for Reserve PUP??

If the player doesnt start camp on the active pup they can not be added to the reserve pup.

Really....so even though a player has NOT practiced in camp they would not be eligible. Hmmm....I've never seen that stated as a rule...interesting. I always thought it had to do with practices..not JUST being on the active PUP list.

Actually, I think you're right Stan. It would seem to defeat the purpose of having the Active/PUP though.

I agree..I THINK..and this is only my speculation is that when a team KNOWS and EXPECTS a player to be out awhile...not practicing..they place the player on ACTIVE PUP. Maybe more of a formality..or a list of those players NOT READY..and once in awhile..players start NOT practicing..and just practice a bit later in camp. I agree it's odd..a bit confusing.

It is confusing, but perhaps the real purpose of Active/PUP is to force the teams to designate PUP-eligible players rather than expecting the league to police who's on the field for each practice.

(Even if you expect the player back within days, it's obviously prudent to list him. Then if he happens to drop a barbell on his toe before hitting practice, he's eligible for PUP instead of IR.)
