Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today - 6 years, $63M ($28M guaranteed)

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Very happy for Matt, but (donning asbestos suit) something keeps gnawing away....

$63,000,000 > 2nd round pick
It's amazing that BB turned down those higher offers. You would think that he would have taken the best offer he could get and still unload Cassel quickly in order to sign Baker and Taylor. What a maroon.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today (Reported $63M 6 Years 28M guarante

I like Matt and all, but come on, all that money for a single year with no other years of play for comparison? Plus best WR's in the game. I had expected more from SP than this crazyness. Glad for Matt, but OMG!

Indeed in about 3 years from now,Pioli will either look like a shmuck lost without BB at his side with a huge cap mistake or he will be confirmed as a continued genius at his job without much aide to help make decisions.

The Chiefs have a huge amount of room under the cap. Three years from now, Pioli can get loose from the contract and be fine. I'm guessing that the Chiefs were quite willing to front-load both the guarantees and the total package, in terms of cap hits.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Congrats to Matt. The Chiefs are my new second-favorite team in the NFL. And considering that Bernard Pollard's a starting safety for them, that's saying something...

Do you think Bernard Pollard gets a cut of this? I mean if Brady plays 19 games last year and Cassel doesn't see the field except for garbage time, he is either locked up at minimum wage or even looking around for third string back up jobs around the league.

A lot of people talk about how the best WRs in the game will let a medicore QB look good. But look at Detroit with Calvin and Roy. How'd that work out? Carsom palmer is an excellent QB by anyone's standards. So he should have been in a lot of superbowls with Housh and 85.

How good did Fitzgerald and Bolden make Lienart look? Pretty crappy. But Warner did well. Perhaps it is because having good WRs does not help you make good decisions and read defenses. Just a thought.

I think that 16 NFL games should give an evaluator a decent read on his abilities. One year showed that Cassel could read defenses and run a team. He won't forget how just by changing uniforms. He has 16 more NFL games under his belt that the new Detroit and Jets QBs that got a lot of money. Remember NFL guys make decisions on paying college guys without ANY NFL experience. Some make it and some don't, but if you want to sign them, you have to pay them. The Chiefs don't lock up Cassel and he has a good year, he will cost a LOT more in 2010. They will have spent $14 mil (or whatever Cassel was scheduled to make) and not have a QB.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Ask yourself this, grasshopper:"How many teams had $15M in immediate cap space so they could sign Matt Cassel right away at the start of FA so the Pats could unload Cassel and be active in FA?" and "How many of those few franchises were needy for a franchise QB?" and finally "How many of those GMs felt Cassel was not a 'system QB' ?" Understanding the market and timing is crucial.

it also should be noted that KC was the only team willing to take on Cassel and his franchise tag salary WITHOUT working out a LT deal before hand. Usually when a team makes this kind of investment in a single player, they want to have a long term deal inplace BEFORE they pull the tringger. Pioli could have had a lot of egg on his face if he couldn't have worked out a deal and Cassell played for the one year at $17+MM and was a free agent again, he had ANOTHER good season and increased his negotiating leverage.

I think that was one of the KEY factors in KC getting Cassel. It wasn't a matter of a day or two more. It would could have been weeks before any LT deal could have been worked out, and unfortunately the Pats didn't have that kind of time

Crazyness he makes just as much as brady now. Anyways good luck Cassel I will be rooting for you this year.

Indeed my good sir.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today (Reported $63M 6 Years 28M guarante

Looks like the talk of whether it will be Thigpen or Cassel as the Chiefs starting QB is being laid to rest today.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign Matt Cassel to a Long-TermContract - Arrowhead Pride

Details of the signing are yet to be announced but Lombardi's prediction of 36M Guaranteed over 6 years would seem possible - It should be announced later.

Good Luck Matt in KC,You will need it ....

Hooray for Matt! He cashed in big time. Looks like the Chiefs were taking their time negotiating and taking a look at him in camps, etc. and liked what they saw. I'll root for the Chiefs when they're not playing against our Pats.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today (Reported $63M 6 Years 28M guarante

Scott Pioli had a leg up on the other GM's since he drafted this kid and watched him mature over the course of 4 seasons and knew what others in the organization who are smarter than the average FO personnel, not to mention fan base, knew.

Someone over on Lombardi's site had a good piece up a while back about young QB's and how the league catches up to many of them after an impressive start. He said that usually happens after 8-10 games. The fact that Cassel got better as the year went on, long after DC's had time to assess his strengths and weaknesses, told him that Matt was already prepared to make the adjustment to their adjustments.

The sky's the limit for this kid if Pioli can teambuild around him. It won't be easy since he's starting from scratch, not just with players but with coaches and personnel people who while they may have some familiarity with Bill and his system haven't exactly run it. Save for the QB. But I guess if you had to choose which position to be most secure about, that's it. Lots of people said a BB/Pioli disciple in Atlanta would never take a QB with that their top 3 pick. But they did and it's finally really turned that franchise around. They may not win it all any time soon, but they are on the right track to tweek rather than scrap over the next couple of seasons. And that's really all Pioli is counting on. Believe me, that was all Bill dared hope for here in 2000/2001. He was as shocked as anyone that this team came together as fast as it did.

And while Josh will likely be under more pressure to win sooner, he too ultimately understood that he needed a QB who could be a disciplined system player and leader at the helm in Denver. Just not sure he didn't wait too long and have to settle for the best remaining option. But he's still better off without a malcontent gunslinger with delusions of grandeur whose been there longer than him potentially sulking in the locker room post game if they don't turn it around there in a season.

Teambuilding is all about forming partnerships and building on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. GM, HC, QB, core defenders. Pick the right guys for those jobs and they will bring the rest of the crew into line.

It's funny how things have come full circle...the connections between these two teams are pretty strong now...that's why i can't help but root for them to have a breakout year, despite Pollard being on the team...

I think it's safe to say that Cassel's picking up the tab whenever they grab a bite to eat/drink from here on out.

Good point. If only Gutz had been the one signed by the Chiefs, everything would be alright in Kansas City and they'd be on their way to capturing a Lombardi.

When I see other qb's making what Cassel and Romo are getting paid I wonder what Brady could get. I would not blame him for going for a bigger contract. It will be his last. Also if he falters at all coming back fans will jump all over him. He should look after himself.

Cassel cashes in on one season of starting – Eric Ortiz - NESN.com
Some might say his success was blind luck, a mere byproduct of running an offense in a Bill Belichick system. Naysayers will rant and rave that anyone with a pulse and the ability to throw a spiral 15 yards could do what Cassel did. But that’s like saying there are only a few steps to solving an advanced calculus equation.

The NFL gridiron is a maze of speed and danger at every turn for quarterbacks — 300-pound monsters with lightning speed and bad intentions, stunting linebackers looking to turn out the lights for good, and ballhawks whose main objective is to embarrass and punish. Anyone who thinks it’s easy to navigate a minefield like that probably thinks Iraq is a nice place to vacation.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Very happy for Matt, but (donning asbestos suit) something keeps gnawing away....

$63,000,000 > 2nd round pick

But $63,000,000 = 2nd round pick plus a full offseason to use all that extra cap space.

If I were BB, I'd much rather have had all the money plus the time to use it, rather than wait six weeks and get, say, a mid-first rounder.
