Looks like the talk of whether it will be Thigpen or Cassel as the Chiefs starting QB is being laid to rest today.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign Matt Cassel to a Long-TermContract - Arrowhead Pride

Details of the signing are yet to be announced but Lombardi's prediction of 36M Guaranteed over 6 years would seem possible - It should be announced later.

Good Luck Matt in KC,You will need it ....

I'm very happy for Cassel. And I'm sure Patriot fans will root for the guy - as long as he's not playing against the Pats, that is.

I agree, I know I'd love to see him succeed and be the franchise quarterback that the Chiefs have needed for a long time

good luck to him I say

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Excellent, I love it when a former Pat (in good standing) makes good.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Congrats to Matt. The Chiefs are my new second-favorite team in the NFL. And considering that Bernard Pollard's a starting safety for them, that's saying something...

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Cassel is one ex-Pat who's easy to root for. Not only did he exceed expectations here and always say the right thing, but his continued success should be an inspiration for other Pats long shots: trust your coaches, work your butt off, and big things can happen.

Absolutely! Love rooting for the guy who helped another injury ridden Pats squad to 11 wins, ESPECIALLY after 3/4ths of Patsfans posters polled here in Aug '08 saw him as a CUT from the 53 and the vituperation continued so much that Ian had to create a special Forum mostly because of 'fans' ripping Cassel.

I'm sure that Pats management intends to use Cassel's $ucce$$ as a motivator and calming influence with young ambitious players.

Oh, man, I liked Cassel from Day 1 of his first OTA. I am SOOOOOO happy for him, for all the reasons you say.

I remember him and Flutie playing that hit-the-crossbar game during warmups. Now, if the Pats would just sign Flutie and get him a SB ring.

eff him, hope he falls on his face. thanks for not making the playoffs you bum!!!!

Very happy for Matt, but (donning asbestos suit) something keeps gnawing away....

$63,000,000 > 2nd round pick

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

He earned that money last year. He will do good for himself there, they will treat him right.

Yeah I thought we would get more but it was Pioli they were dealing with, the guy must hypnotize people or something.

Cassel showed he could handle pressure last year and he has the tools to make it. Good luck to him.

One thing now thats certain is that Patriots backups will be closely monitored from now on.

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Good luck matt! Its great he's gettin the top dollar he deserves, hope he has great success but not against us!

Re: Cassel signs long term deal with Chiefs today

Matty Cassel got PAAIIID! Good for that clown. I'll be watching him closely this year . . . he and Vrabel both. I hope they both do well.

It's because of the $63M that we "only" got a 2nd round pick. If Cassel were signed for two more years the equation would have been different. IMO we did well to get a #2 given that his new team had to also pay him a mint. Also, the second pick of the second round is more than an average 2nd round pick.

The key point is that $63/6 million << $16 million.

Cassell was overpaid by $6 million or more this year under the franchise tender, and he had that as negotiating leverage in this deal.

In essence, Pioli paid a 2nd PLUS a few million bucks for the right to negotiate with him.

Ask yourself this, grasshopper:"How many teams had $15M in immediate cap space so they could sign Matt Cassel right away at the start of FA so the Pats could unload Cassel and be active in FA?" and "How many of those few franchises were needy for a franchise QB?" and finally "How many of those GMs felt Cassel was not a 'system QB' ?" Understanding the market and timing is crucial.
