Memo to the NFL: Add a playoff round, not more regular season games

Status
Not open for further replies.
No more games, no more playoff rounds. Let them take the occasion of the new CBA to:

eliminate 1 exhibition game

pull the player discipline appeals out of the Ommissioner's office

set out a rational fine/suspension system

pull non-'enhancing' drugs off the drug testing list

lessen the revenue percentage paid to players

create a more reasonable pay structure for the first 16 picks of the draft

prevent teams and the league from using uniforms for advertising

either eliminate "voluntary" camps or prevent teams from punishing players who don't attend those "voluntary" camps

Start there. Quit screwing with the games that count.

Again, old news.

Maybe so, but I hadn't seen this anywhere and thought that I would contribute. I don't think it such old news, since changing the regular season is basically a done deal at this point, and I really don't want that to happen.

:disagreement:

The problem I have with adding a round of playoffs and expanding the number of teams that qualify for the playoffs is that it cheapens the regular season. The NFL would become like the NHL and NBA, where the regular season is almost meaningless - and in essence becomes the preseason before the real season (i.e., playoffs) begins.

No way will they go with less than 20 TOTAL games....so I would stick with 4...If you take one less...it would be 17 games...which I think we both do NOT want...
pull the player discipline appeals out of the Ommissioner's office

Absolutely....RG is out of control the less power he has the better overall.
pull non-'enhancing' drugs off the drug testing list
Not sure on this one..but it makes sense..the less confusion on that list the better
lessen the revenue percentage paid to players
yes...a bit but not as much as the owners want..enough so to be fair to BOTH sides..
create a more reasonable pay structure for the first 16 picks of the draft
Absolutely...the first picks are treated as royalty when they have done nothing. It really penalizes teams now..there are teams not wanting to pick a player so high..wanting to give that much money for a player not worth it...MANY examples.
prevent teams and the league from using uniforms for advertising
I am not sure on this..I don't LIKE the idea,,but to raise revenue maybe it's an option..just so long as the unis are NOT covered like in NASCAR,,MAYBE something simple and small...but..ONLY in limited ways..if it opens the door for more..I agree keep it out altogether..
either eliminate "voluntary" camps or prevent teams from punishing players who don't attend those "volntary" camps
.
Not sure here...camps are needed in the offseason...are we talking the offseason workouts??
Start there. Quit screwing with the games that count.
I agree NO MORE GAMES!!!! ..and these are ALL some good topics of diiscussions as are others...I can not at all think that another round of playoffs would be better..it wouldn't..it's fine..do NOT change what is working...To me the biggest is the rookie pay scale QUITE needed...

The regular season is still important in both of those leagues. There is a lot to be said of home court/rink advantage. The next thing is, that from a marketing perspective, how many of the extra games in the final weeks of an extended season would have any effect on the playoffs? There more than likely wouldn't be many that did. I wish they would just leave it alone.
