I don't think the Pats will sign anyone major...

If we sign anyone, it will involve a trade, probably Seymour. Not necessarily a straight trade but a picks plus cap relief move, followed by another move. More likely (as FA hits the dregs) we're looking at a cap concious jags n rookies kinds year. Hey, throw enough crap at a wall, something's gotta stick, right?

who is left there 'major' we can sign ?

Re: I don't think the Pats will sign anyone major.....

I sure hope you are wrong.

We REALLY need an above average pass rusher. If we dont sign someone who can really get after the QB, I think we are pretty much screwed in '09. Especially if we enter camp with Hobbs as our CB1 again. He gets burnt more than firewood in December. Dude is a nickle at best (with an average pass rush).

We really cant afford to piss away yet another season of Brady/Moss as neither is getting any younger.

Your right and I feel exactly the same way. I know I'm going to get ripped for this, but the Pats could have won win the super bowl every year since '04 had the front office not been so cheap with their money. Seriously, how much better where those teams that have won the super bowl since the Pats in '04? Tom Brady is at another level compared to every QB in the game. There's Tom Brady and then their is a huge drop off. Give Brady a good team, he will beat you. Give Brady a great team and you shouldn't even bother showing up. This is probably the most disappointing thing about Pats management; the cut and paste method and relying on scheme.

Other than the '07 off season, each of the last off season's since '04 have been a complete joke. Bringing in guys like Monte Biesel and trying to make him the MLB version of Mike Vrabel was pathetic. For BB to bring in Fernando Bryant and think he could replace Samuel was pathetic. I won't even bother with Duane Starks because he is too easy.

Believe it or not, this is the most important off season of BB's career. He has a first round pick and three second round picks. The Pats need to be lights out in this years draft if their not going to sign anybody special in FA. Oh yeah, and Tom Brady is coming off a serious injury.

Alright, that's all I have to say so start ripping me.

Trade Seymour?

I've been looking forward to watching Richard play in a contract year. Don't trade him. The whole reason to sign him in the first place was for this season. He plays harder than ever in a contract year.

What does it even mean that they were cheap with their money? They were up against the cap each and every season.

Re: I don't think the Pats will sign anyone major.....

We have about $7M for free agency.

Total cap money available $12.8M
need for rookies ($2.8M)
-------
sub total $10.0M
needed for other items listed ($3.0M)
--------
Total available for free agency $7.0M

But, they always make more room with incentives and easy to earn escalators, and coming into an uncapped year, we'll have plenty of room to come up with incentives that can create a lot of cap space this year. If Peppers said tomorrow morning that he'd sign for $10 million a year, you can bet there'd be room for him.
