If there's one thing we've learned from Bill is he is prepared ...
So with Pioli and McDaniels in the news I am sure Bill has already made a few phone calls.
So take a guess or two ... who has Bill called ... off the record of course.
Pete Mangurian as the new OC or or smeone from the outside?
Dom Capers to move to the front office or someone from the outside?
As a UVA alumni, I can definitively state that you dont want Al Groh anywhere near this organization. Look at UVAs record since 2000 when he took over. Stagnant.
Zampese is 70 years old. Are you talking about his son who coaches Palmer?
Ernie Zampese and Al Groh
When did you become a Patriots fan?
Maybe they'll bring in Mike Martz as OC if he's out in San Francisco?
Because a man with Shanahan's pedigree just won't run to the next HC job offered. Look at Cowher and the Jets, for example. Pioli and the Browns. I'm not saying it's a slam dunk at all, but Shanahan would be foolish to take the Jets HC job with all the stress and circus crap that that would entail, when he could get a pretty good payday in NE as an offensive coach. If he wanted to, and it was offered.
I can also see him going into some network gig for a year or two to decompress and see what jobs open up.

Ivan Fears could be the guy. He has a lot of tenure and a cool name.
He certainly has a great resume Ivan Fears - Official New England Patriots Biography but I just don't see him as an OC. Too many years as an assistant never being a head man.
If McDaniels does leave I like Pete Mangurian Pete Mangurian - Official New England Patriots Biography for the job. He's been an OC in the league and an HC in college. Then BB could move around the staff to fill his TE coach position by moving Bill O'Brien to TEs Bill O'Brien - Official New England Patriots Biography, so he can groom him for the future since he has already coached RBs and WRs in the past, move Ivan Fears back to WRs and hire John Settle, Wisconsin's current RB coach for that same position. Settle is part of BB's coaching tree, he hired him as a Quality Control (Offense) guy.
As far as Pioli's replacement is concerned here are my thoughts: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/203023-if-pioli-does-leave.html

Are there any ex-Pats guys that Mangina stole when he went to the Jets that might be a fit? Brian "Walsh didn't tell me nuthin'" Daboll perhaps? Were there any other guys?

In New England, the question now is who replaces McDaniels. The Patriots' other offensive coaches are Ivan Fears (running back), Pete Manguarian (tight ends), Bill O'Brien (receivers) and Dante Scarnecchia (offensive line/asst. head coach).
Mangurian held the offensive coordinator title with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003, while O'Brien was the offensive coordinator at Duke University in 2006.
If the Patriots stay in-house, Mangurian and O'Brien would seem to be the likely candidates. Head coach Bill Belichick could also take a more active role in play-calling.
If the Patriots seek a coordinator outside of the organization, it would presumably have to be someone willing to adapt to the system that New England already has in place. The Patriots are unlikely to significantly alter what they do, which is a consideration to keep in mind as they look to fill McDaniels' void.
If your looking for a young up and coming candidate for OC, here's one to look at: current Broncos QB coach and playcaller Jeremy Bates DenverBroncos.com – Official Website Of The Denver Broncos. Lane Kiffin recently tried to get him to join his Vols staff @ Tenn. There is a BB connection here Jeremy's father is, Jim Bates, long time defensive coach in the NFL who coached DL for BB from 1991-1995 on his Cleveland staff and whose still friendly w/BB. Most here will remember Jim as the interim HC of the Dolphins in our SB 2004 winning season when they beat us down there 29-28 in a late game/season shocker. Here's an explanation of how Jeremy functioned as a coach in Denver: The Broncos PlaycallingExplained - Mile High Report The way I see it he had similar experience to McDaniels as a de facto OC with a similar style offense, at least last year.
