Speculation time - who has Belichick called?

I know that getting comp for Pioli is not happening, (its a "step up"), but can/will we get it for McD?

Nope. Promotions from OC to HC don't get compensation.

If there's one thing we've learned from Bill is he is prepared ...
So with Pioli and McDaniels in the news I am sure Bill has already made a few phone calls.

So take a guess or two ... who has Bill called ... off the record of course.

Pete Mangurian as the new OC or or smeone from the outside?

Dom Capers to move to the front office or someone from the outside?

I suspect that the Patriots were grooming someone. It was Tom Dimitroff, and he got tired of waiting and went to Atlanta instead. Off his first year peformance, I think he is a keeper. Since that was only a year ago the preparations for a possible successor are now premature. It may be Nick Caserio but he isn't ready yet, by his resume.

As a UVA alumni, I can definitively state that you dont want Al Groh anywhere near this organization. Look at UVAs record since 2000 when he took over. Stagnant.

Zampese is 70 years old. Are you talking about his son who coaches Palmer?

When did you become a Patriots fan?

Maybe they'll bring in Mike Martz as OC if he's out in San Francisco?

Not a bad idea for a passing offense like the Pats.

Because a man with Shanahan's pedigree just won't run to the next HC job offered. Look at Cowher and the Jets, for example. Pioli and the Browns. I'm not saying it's a slam dunk at all, but Shanahan would be foolish to take the Jets HC job with all the stress and circus crap that that would entail, when he could get a pretty good payday in NE as an offensive coach. If he wanted to, and it was offered.

I can also see him going into some network gig for a year or two to decompress and see what jobs open up.

I don't see Shanahan coaching in football at all this year unless Jerry Jones offers him a boatload of money to coach the Cowboys. Shanahan's days as an OC are done. You don't go from a two time Super Bowl winning coach back to an OC. Shanahan has 21 million reasons to sit at home rather than come back and be an OC for someone else.

Personally, I think Shanahan will take a talking head gig on ESPN, NBC, CBS, Fox, or the NFL Network and return to football in 2010 or 2011. I give little to no shot that Shanahan will be coaching this year and no shot for him going back to a coordinator role.

I wouldn't bet on that. PFT had an article on the changes to the rules about hiring front office personnel and it is far broader than the final decision maker role and looks to cover Pioli. Besides, both Jonathan and Robert Kraft has indicated that there is language in Pioli's contract to get compensation and many have speculated that his contract has him designated as final decision maker (which would block him from leaving no matter his title) rather than in Belichick's contract. So eventhough Belichick and Pioli treat the responsibility as co-decision makers, Pioli may in reality actually be the one contractually who is the final decision maker.

Who has BB called?
For example, I'll bet he's called Shanahan and asked him about various folks on his coaching and scouting tree. Why not check around the league and get a line on who some of the best guys are since you're not coaching games?
BB is preparing just in case there are openings in the Pats org.

So Shanahan is too good to be a HC of some teams so just for the honor of being part of our great franchise, that is like heaven compared to the hell of working for any other football team that isnt the Patriots?
Do you get outside often?

Do you really think Mike Shanahan needs a 'pretty good payday' as an asst coach at this point?

Ivan Fears could be the guy. He has a lot of tenure and a cool name.

He certainly has a great resume Ivan Fears - Official New England Patriots Biography but I just don't see him as an OC. Too many years as an assistant never being a head man.

If McDaniels does leave I like Pete Mangurian Pete Mangurian - Official New England Patriots Biography for the job. He's been an OC in the league and an HC in college. Then BB could move around the staff to fill his TE coach position by moving Bill O'Brien to TEs Bill O'Brien - Official New England Patriots Biography, so he can groom him for the future since he has already coached RBs and WRs in the past, move Ivan Fears back to WRs and hire John Settle, Wisconsin's current RB coach for that same position. Settle is part of BB's coaching tree, he hired him as a Quality Control (Offense) guy.

As far as Pioli's replacement is concerned here are my thoughts: http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/203023-if-pioli-does-leave.html

If your looking for a young up and coming candidate for OC, here's one to look at: current Broncos QB coach and playcaller Jeremy Bates DenverBroncos.com – Official Website Of The Denver Broncos. Lane Kiffin recently tried to get him to join his Vols staff @ Tenn. There is a BB connection here Jeremy's father is, Jim Bates, long time defensive coach in the NFL who coached DL for BB from 1991-1995 on his Cleveland staff and whose still friendly w/BB. Most here will remember Jim as the interim HC of the Dolphins in our SB 2004 winning season when they beat us down there 29-28 in a late game/season shocker. Here's an explanation of how Jeremy functioned as a coach in Denver: The Broncos PlaycallingExplained - Mile High Report The way I see it he had similar experience to McDaniels as a de facto OC with a similar style offense, at least last year.

Nick Saban and Jimmy Johnson - However not for the reasons you think.

Nick to give his condolences after that beat down his Team got on Friday.

and

Jimmy to discuss their deep sea fishing trip this Spring/Summer.

Then he called me and I turned down Pioli's job. Why did I do this? Because I like the weather in Atlanta.

Sorry - Too much sugar, all that Christmas candy just sitting around the office, ya know?

Are there any ex-Pats guys that Mangina stole when he went to the Jets that might be a fit? Brian "Walsh didn't tell me nuthin'" Daboll perhaps? Were there any other guys?

Only Daboll: Brian Daboll : Quarterbacks : Official Jets Bio : New York Jets Team News and an intern named ****erson: Andy ****erson : Quality Control - Defense : Official Jets Bio : New York Jets Team News. That's it, they have a really young staff in terms of NFL experience. I don't think any of these guys will be candidates.

Reiss's take on McDaniels possible replacement: Josh McDaniels analysis - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

In New England, the question now is who replaces McDaniels. The Patriots' other offensive coaches are Ivan Fears (running back), Pete Manguarian (tight ends), Bill O'Brien (receivers) and Dante Scarnecchia (offensive line/asst. head coach).

Mangurian held the offensive coordinator title with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003, while O'Brien was the offensive coordinator at Duke University in 2006.

If the Patriots stay in-house, Mangurian and O'Brien would seem to be the likely candidates. Head coach Bill Belichick could also take a more active role in play-calling.

If the Patriots seek a coordinator outside of the organization, it would presumably have to be someone willing to adapt to the system that New England already has in place. The Patriots are unlikely to significantly alter what they do, which is a consideration to keep in mind as they look to fill McDaniels' void.

Bates took a job w/USC: The National Football Post | Breaking: Bates Heading To USC

I'll throw Floyd Reese out there. Worked will Bill in Detroit when they were both starting out. Reese had some very good drafts with Tenn. I think his only big mistake was Pacman.
