With Eagles playing Cards............one team goes to Super Bowl and we move up, since both had worse records then ours.

Cool!

I guess by a similar logic we would benefit from a Charger win.

Edit: Oh wait. That would probably hurt our second round trade pick by more value than it would help our own picks.

Patriots draft pick improves

Thanks to an astute e-mailer, our good pal Josh, the following nugget is passed along:

With the Eagles (9-6-1 regular-season record) and Cardinals (9-7 regular-season record) meeting in the NFC Championship game -- which ensures that one of them will be in the Super Bowl -- the Patriots' draft position has improved by one spot to 23rd overall.

Draft order is determined by regular-season record, and the 11-5 Patriots were initially projected to draft 24th. The Eagles were initially projected to pick 22nd and the Cardinals 21st.

There is one exception, however, as the Super Bowl loser (regardless of regular-season record) picks 31st and the Super Bowl winner (regardless of regular-season record) picks 32nd.

Thus, the Patriots bump up the spot.

Re: Patriots draft order bumped up one spot

and if SD gets to the super bowl we go up another spot. i'm really hoping that vontae davis will be there at 22 or 23.

He will be.

There should be some outstanding players still available at 23 though due to all the underclassmen coming out. And a possible OT run.

Such a joke that 1-30 is based entirely on record, and that a playoff team can pick before a non-playoff team....

Yeah, but the second round pick the Pats get from the Chargers drops about 10-12 spots. Rather have our second round pick a dozen spots higher than our first round pick one spot higher.

We're at #23 now. We selected Maroney, Wilfork, and Graham all at #21. Wilfork is an example of a top rated player who slid. Graham is an example of our trade up from the bottom of round one, at the cost of a 3rd and 7th. So if we wanted to part with a 3rd-rounder to move up a couple of spots -- we could. I'd like to hold onto our picks this draft, but a 3rd for the right player is very reasonable.

Tell me about it.
I'm perfectly fine with the way the playoff seeding is determined, but non-playoff teams should always pick first. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the NBA do it that way?!? Wow, does the NBA do something better than the NFL!?!?!?!!?

Where do we draft now with San Diego's pick in the 2nd round? 5 teams had 8-8 records, drafting from 12-16 within each round. SD has #16 in the 1st round based both on highest winning opponent winning percentage and on being the only playoff team among the 5. Does that mean that we have #12 in the 2nd from SD (#44), as I believe the order reverses in off rounds, or do we have #48?

Their second round pick moves up one from the first round. If the do have the #16, as you say, in round one then we would have #15 in round two.
