Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

I'm telling you, that three-pack to the Brown's would be a smart move by the owners to excite the fan-base.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

The Browns have also asked for permission to interview McDaniels for HC.
Here we go again (not seasoned enough, like Mangini). Pats lose a good coordinator, who probably goes on to fail in Cleveland = lose/lose.

Now the word is that the Browns are actually in New York, not New England, meeting with Pioli - and Mangini, because "they want to get a feel for him."

They also are rumored to be interested in Shanahan:

Cleveland Browns want to contact Mike Shanahan - Cleveland Browns Blog - Browns Beat - cleveland.com

Seems to me Lerner is sticking his hands into too many cookie jars at once...

Yup. He just might end up with none of the above.
He'll have no one to blame but himself.

So they're taking the sawed-off shotgun approach.....

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

This makes me wonder, once again....

Does Brady "49.5% completion rate" Quinn have the ability to adapt to McDaniels' offense?

Why do you keep harping on his completion rating? Did you stop to think that some of that could have been the inordinate number of drops by his WRs and TEs?

Be honest. Matt Cassel's completion rating would be closer to 68 or 69% just from the passes that Moss and Welker dropped this year. Never mind Ben Watson, David Thomas and Jabar Gaffney.

I'm not harping on anything, because that 50% completion was in a different system in the NFL. However, while he was able to reach a high of 64.9% in his junior year, that percentage did dip for him as a senior and he's dropped down to about 50% in the pros. In the Patriots system, a 50% completion rate is completely unacceptable. Therefore, Quinn's ability to adapt at the NFL level becomes crucial to the Browns short-term offensive success. It's a legitimate question, and I'm confident it's one that McDaniels would ask himself before taking the Browns HC job.

Also, as far as the drops go, a certain number of drops is expected from receivers, just as a certain number of lousy passes can be expected to be saved by great catches. However, in order to drop 10% from what 'should' be the percentage, even out of just 100 passes, you're talking about receivers dropping 10 passes out of that hundred above and beyond the expected. Edwards, just as an example, was credited with something like 14 drops for the season. Drops probably weren't the reason that Quinn was hitting under 50% of his passes instead of over 60%.

Thank the gods that Heath "Hands" Evans had a great game receiving and YAC in Buffalo. IIRC Moss' & Welker's 1st TOs were fumbles after the catch from Brady in game one. Moss had a bit of an off year with drops and w/o making several highlight catches; I look for him to come back strong next season.

As to Cleveland with Pioli, if they really do want an answer today, it will be no. They're panicing over KC and possibly Denvah having competing offers.

Ya know what...IF...and I am not convinced he really does want to leave (unless a real sweetheart deal comes his way), but, IF, he is ready to move on, then maybe it is time to say thanks Scott but see ya.

Who wants a guy with a wandering eye around, for what, one more year at best??

The Browns can't trade for Cassel with Brady Quinn on the roster. It is too early to give up on Quinn too.

Unless Pioli is unhappy in New England (and I can't understand why he would be) then I think forcing a decision may only backfire on the Browns. If they are this impatient in trying to hire him...how patient will they be as Pioli and the new coach try and right the ship in Cleveland?

agree'd......... If they are insisting they get an answer today, then my guess is they will get one today in the form of "piss up a rope".

I also do not worry about KC getting Pioli, I don't think that is really realistic as the owner LOVES Hermy and the first this Pioli would have to due when he got there would be to "fire Herm".

Denver on the other hand, does perhaps worry me some.

If Pioli wants to move on then he should do it now so the Pats can find his replacement. If he doesn't want to be with the Pats he is not going to be doing a good job and needs to go. Same for Josh.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

It was noted recently that the owners had actually changed the rule regarding a person considered to be the TOP Non-football (read - Non-coach) person for a team. Unless the person is not under contract, the team has to ask for permission to interview the person in question. And, that leads me to believe they would also be required to pay compensation should they hire that person away from the team.
I understand they have to ask permission, but why does that mean they must pay compensation? I don't see how the two are related.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

completion percentage is an important statistic, not the end all.

however, i dont care how many drops a team has, that will not have a large effect on the percentage of completions. maybe 4-8 points at most, and thats more drops than the browns. that would put him around 55-58, still not good

i do think the browns stink and the QBs had a tough time. i expect quinn to be a good pro QB

Because that is what the rules say. Because its a lateral move and not a promotion.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

funny, about a month ago those who posted that Pioli might go to another team ( hmmmm...was Kansas City mentioned?) had their intelligence questioned for saying it was a possibility.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Well for those Browns fans who cannot understand why their team is so bad...here you go. I cannot fathom how Lerner could possibly think he is in any position to dememand anything from anyone, his franchise is a joke, he needs to understand that he is not Kraft or the other elite team owners that would actually bring something to the table. Pioli and Mcdaniels both run the risk of having their legacy seriously tainted by taking a job with the browns.

After all the good coaches that have been there and failed, you have to think that the biggest problem there is the owner, he obviously is a serious problem, and last I checked you cannot fire a owner so any good coach/executive should run away...fast.

Yah, and they were right! :snob:

Busy, busy: Lerner completes Pioli interview, with McKay next; coaching pool growing - Cleveland Browns football NFL News - cleveland.com

Lerner met with New England vice president Scott Pioli on Wednesday and is scheduled to interview Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay Thursday.

Browns President Mike Keenan joined Lerner -- but did not sit in on the Pioli interview -- raising speculation that a deal was near.

Adam Schefter of NFL.com reported the Browns wanted an answer from Pioli before they left him. But that report was discounted by a source familiar with Lerner's process, who said, "I would be surprised" if Lerner did not hold off a contract offer until he interviewed McKay, as scheduled.

...

Shapiro weighs in: Indians GM Mark Shapiro has close ties to two of the Browns top two candidates: He's Mangini's brother-in-law and Pioli's close friend.

During a conference call Wednesday, Shapiro said, "I'm well aware of what's going on with Eric and Scott. They're important people in my life. I've got my hands full right now with the Indians and my family, but I'm a strong advocate of each guy. It would be special to have one or both of them in Cleveland."

Ferentz take: Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz responded to a report in the Boston Herald that he'd be Pioli's first choice for a head coach during his Outback Bowl press conference.

"(The NFL speculation) seems to be a drill right now," Ferentz said Wednesday. "So be it."

On Pioli, he said, "We've been great friends all the way through and I have tremendous respect for Scott as a football guy. ... I would just caution everybody don't try to predict what Scott's going to do either. He's got a great job and he's well aware of that."
