Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today [Update: No decision yet]

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Is it just me or are the Browns handling this weird. I understand the need to get this done quick as there is a lot to do including finding a coach but to put that kind of a timeline on such a big decision is weird. You would think you want to make the choice easy for the guy not make it harder by making him have to do it today.
Also the rumors of them wanting Mangini. Regardless of whether its Pioli or not wouldn't the new GM want to be involved in this process?

Pioli should hurry up to make sure the Browns don't hire Mangini ;)

I do think it's weird that the Browns are interviewing head coaches before they hire their GM. What's the point? Unless it's a backup plan if they think Pioli might say no.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Mangini is a very weird smokescreen, that makes no sense.. unless telling Pioli to sign now, if he hesitates he will be stuck with him.. which also makes no sense.. come to think of it, Mangini does not seem to fit in this equation at all..

Will there be compensation? I assume no, but I thought I read on here that there may be.

Don't believe so because he is not the final decision-maker here, whereas he would be in Cleveland. So it is considered a step-up. Could be wrong.

Unless Pioli is unhappy in New England (and I can't understand why he would be) then I think forcing a decision may only backfire on the Browns. If they are this impatient in trying to hire him...how patient will they be as Pioli and the new coach try and right the ship in Cleveland?

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

I agree...emanding a quick answer is NOT the way to lure someone..I think THAT is a red flag right there. The Cleveland situation is not a good one with ex-players having input into things....BAD owner. BAD situation...I hope Pioli stays away from it..RAC took an opportunity and had Savage..who was not a great GM and the Pres of the team interfering here and there. I REALLY think KC would be better for SP...and Mangini?? The ONLY thing that makes me think this MAY be close is Kirk Ferentz...as AzPatsFan said..THAT is why it may...the rat fink?? That will drive him away.

It was noted recently that the owners had actually changed the rule regarding a person considered to be the TOP Non-football (read - Non-coach) person for a team. Unless the person is not under contract, the team has to ask for permission to interview the person in question. And, that leads me to believe they would also be required to pay compensation should they hire that person away from the team.

How Not to Go About the Hiring Process by Randy Lerner & The Cleveland Browns.

Wow. The Browns are coming across as the creepy, arrogant guy that a chick gives her phone number to, then he leaves messages when they aren't calling back about how they have lots of girls they could be talking to and she should be flattered they are giving them the time of day, when in fact the girl is a 10 and can have her pick of anyone.

Weird approach.

Openly looking at other GMs, while you are interviewing the prize GM on the market; looking at coaches before you even hire a GM.

No wonder that franchise is in the toilet.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

What nerve the Browns have.
I sure do hope Scott gives them an immediate "no".

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Great organizations start from the top. The top of the Browns organization is at the bottom of the NFL.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

I would really be surprised if Scott accepts them at this point.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

I am sure Brown's ownership is fearful if Pioli interviews elsewhere, he may not take the Broowns job. Problem is, Cleveland is in no position to be demanding anything. Pioli ought to tell them to pound sand...

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Even if he doesn't take the Browns job, he could still be in play in Kansas City or Denver (Shanahan was the GM too).

He might decide he doesn't want to go to Cleveland, but it doesn't mean that he's decided he's staying. It might, hopefully it does. But we'll see.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

If the Browns are in fact demanding an answer today as has been reported, then it should be a huge red flag for Pioli to stay away from them. I don't know of any profession where you are forced to make a decision the very day of your interview and smacks of unprofessionalism. To me it would sound like an owner that might not be the best to work for.

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

Don't prospective GM's/head coaches typically go to the city where the team plays for the job interview?

Sounds like the Browns really really wanted to interview him, he wasn't all that interested but said, "okay, if you want to talk, fine we can meet in Boston."

Re: Schefter: Browns want answer from Pioli today

The Browns have also requested permission to talk to JMcD. . . .
