Am I the only one who doesn't like the video additions to the blog. When I go to his blog for somethign to read and get a 2 min. video instead it kind of annoys me. For whatever reason I like to read what these guys think more than watch it. For the record I am not a big fan of Patriots.com for this same reason. there used to be tons to read there now it is all in video.

It's better since they've been adding the gist in text. I just wish the videos were in a mobile friendly format.

Yes but they give you the gist of the fluffy video they produced instead of writting what used to be very good breakdowns.

I prefer it without the video. I love Reiss, but it's hard to take him seriously about football if you see what he looks like. Of course, the same's probably true for me...

Yeah, I see what you're saying. It's tough to fault Mike, though, he must work long hours during the season. If a video blog here and there gives him a bit of a break, it's hard to begrudge him that considering the constant flow of info he provides us.

Don't get me wrong I have not gone to Reiss' blog any less because of it, he is still the best on the Patriot beat.

It grows on you, whether you consider that the equivalent of mold or an appreciation of the options video gives you I can't say...

The good: Mike has begun to use the video to discuss 'football' as an art - today's discussion of the Hobbs KR is an example. Mike, like so many of us, is learning the fundamentals of the game as he goes, so his discussions are simplified, not so much for the audience but as a way of managing his own inexperience - I wonder if any of the BC Football coaches teach coaching courses like the one Albert Breer took when he was at Ohio State? I really like this direction and the way video lends itself to this in a new dialogue with the fans and "readers."
-- Mike/Chris, build on this start, I think this is where you'll hook the "readers" of your blog. You might want to adapt it, see if any of the local high school and college coaches (or even the players themselves) would give you the time for an "interview" on camera analyzing a particular play for the Pats - like you did with the Hobbs KR. That could be a lot of fun to "read" in the blog and a teaching tool for both reporter and reader. :woot:

The okay: Clips of the players and coaches as they are interviewed is fine, I like the time savings of reading the printed copy, but it's occasionally nice to watch the video and make your own interpretation of context.

The bad: The 'things to watch for videos' actually limit Mike and Chris. They are both strong writers and I believe they communicate better in that medium. I hope they drop that approach and use the video for teaching and analysis, and as a way of sharing the locker/press room experience with their readers.

EDIT: SBB - I urge patience with this, I'd say Mike and Chris and Co. are looking for ways to make the blog more enjoyable and digestible for the average fan. I think some of what they are doing is going to grow on you if they continue in the direction they've started in.

if anything my browser takes a while to load the boston.com pages due to the vidoes so no...

Another "no" on the videos. I don't even bother to watch them so I can't say whether they are any good or not. I don't like watching videos from the computer period. Lots of times I am at work (or even at home) and have the sound turned off, so they are useless to me.

No, it is a newspaper. TV websites should have video clips, newspapers should have text.

Also him talking to a camera adds nothing to the content. If you are showing a clip of a game or a clip of an interview then the actual video adds to the content, but if all you are doing is reading to me your analysis, I would rather read it myself.

Very good analysis and I can't really argue with much of it. I think the "Bad" as you state is what prompted me to create this. The "good" is certainly the best part of the new video but I think there is a lot of room for improving his breakdowns of a play especially the technology. The "OK" while it is nice to hear the actual interviews you get so little from them and the quotes actually seems better with the addition of the stroy even though the context can be misrepresented and you usually can't hear the question being asked so context can be tough there too.

I like the videos but I said no to having them on his blog because the page is always slow to load and freezes on me. If he wants to link to video that's fine, but I hate how long the page load is.

Like most people I read like 5 billion times faster than people talk so I always prefer print.

Print is better for sure. I love to read a couple lines and ignore the rest. Video you can't do that. On top of that, there's something I don't like about Gasper which I never thought about until they started doing videos.

Hahaha

and people think Reiss doesn't look like a football guy. Gasper really doesn't.

I agree with BOR. But then, I usually do.

How in the world could Reiss have diagrammed that KR with words? The video was quite useful.

Of course, it requires a new way of thinking: There are pictures that are worth a thousand words, and also the reverse. Video should be used for the former, not the latter.

There are words that are worth a thousand pictures? That would make those words worth infinite words, since each of those thousand pictures is worth a thousand words, and if that magic word turns up again... wow.

THAT is one special word.

Just funnin' ya'

Maybe it's a mindset but when I click Mike's blog I just want to read. One of the things I really love about Reiss' Pieces is the quick accessibility to the news;I rarely click the videos because it's quicker for me just to read the text.

Thinking about it, on the whole I sort of dislike news videos unless there's something to actually see besides the reporter talking into a mic. The news is the star, not the reporter but that's just me
