Chris Henry earns a roster exemption.

Henry didn’t count against the 53-man roster while he was suspended, and he won’t count against the active roster this week.

The team announced on Monday that the league has given the Bengals a roster exemption for Henry.

The issue hit the front burner last week, when the Buccaneers would have been faced with having to cut a player and sign a kicker if Matt Bryant couldn’t play a day after burying his infant son. The situation arguably pressured Bryant to play, given that one of his teammates would have lost his spot on the team if Bryant had taken the week off.

Apparently, the largely worthless Competition Committee will examine the issue in the offseason.

Yes and one was worthy of a roster exzemption and the other isn't and they have it backwards.

Grieving time should = roster exzemption

Scumbag WR comes back from suspension and is not ready for football = team decision to sign and thus should be part of their decision that he might take a roster spot while he isnt ready to play.

This thread ought show off the age of a lot of our posters. As someone with three kids and having lost one, I can't even imagine how he got out there and played. The NFL screwed the pooch on this one. No respect points.

When Kyle Eckel left the Navy and returned to the LOLfins in November '06, the commissioner gave them a roster exemption through the end of the season.

If he can do that, I see absolutely no possible excuse for not showing human decency and giving Bryant a one-week exemption. [Seriously, who in their right mind could possibly object?]

I'm not suggesting Goodell be given the power to decide when roster exemptions are appropriate. What I'm saying is that if he has the power to give that kind of a roster exemption, there is no justifiable reason not to create a policy to give shorter-term exemptions for situations such as this one.

I also have three kids, and I cannot imagine what the loss of any of them would do to me. My deepest condolences to you, and to Matt.

It was hard enough for me burying friends when I was in the military. Kids are a whole 'nuther matter.

This whole situation pisses me off, and I've been making nightly panicked visits to my son's crib because of it. I have no idea how Bryant put on the pads this weekend.

"That's how it's always been done," IMO, is not sufficient justification for anything.

Similarly, I'm not arguing for Goodell to unilaterally make a decision. What I'm saying is that I can't see why the NFLPA and the owners can't hammer something simple out without having to go through the trouble of trying to renegotiate the entire CBA.
