The days of blocking with just five guys are quickly disappearing and are probably gone. I remember early last season Brady would have all day.

Then last season the Eagles came, and Baltimore, then the Giants(week17) and the SB debacle. They had a good game against the Jaguars and then San Diego.

We all worried whether they would adjust this season as we knew team would blitz and pressure them all day. The O-Line is good but probably overrated because of Brady's quick reads.

They really need to keep some extra guys in for protection or do what they've been doing and rolling the QB out.

The defense will work itself out.

One of today's differences in the game is their OLB's versus ours. They had much more pressure.

IMO the only way they will be able to go long and give the QB enough time is max protect or roll the pocket. There is no way the QB is going to have enought time with just 5 guys blocking.

Watson was not good blocking. Thomas had some good plays and some bad.

Every year it seems like this team has an issue in one critical area though I think last years issue was masked.

2005- couldn't run the ball/db's
2006- wide recvrs
2007- O-line play was inconsistent at the tail end of the season

Agreed. They need to get it together.

You know, at one point during the game today, I was sitting there, thinking what was wrong with the team. My conclusion was the offensive line, and my reason was inconsistency. Great minds think alike?

Thanks Pats 1. I've always respected your opinion. You are usually reserved and when you do speak you speak with knowledge.

We can blame Cassel all we want but it seems like he isn't getting a heck of alot of time and do we have an adequate blocking tight end? It seems we can put the tight ends in the inconsistent category too.

Re: The O-Line has been inconistent going back to the last third of last season

I have been saying this since the SB and nobody seemed to care. You need to clock to open holes for the backs to run through and not get hit in the backfield. Man, I am watching the Stellers/Eagles and they both have good OL. Have you seen the size of the Cowboys OL and the Gmen?
We need to draft a OL in the first this year to protect Brady for the rest of his career with us.
The Panthers just drafted some big OL from Pitts and he's starting.
You win on the line and you lose on the line.

I can't disagree with you. Maybe a free agent also. Heck Dallas got the mammoth Leonard Davis

Has the DEFENSIVE line slipped a little bit too?

Yes I believe they have. We needs speed rusher or two to get to the QB. The Ravens always have a older D yet always seem to get to the QB. We don't do that.

O'Callaghan and Neal are out, Watson is just coming back and isn't much of a blocker, Thomas isn't much of a blocker, Kaczur is playing medication free, and Clady is playing in Denver. A poor start by the line and TEs should come as no surprise, especially given that Belioli brought in about 50,000 players to try filling the positions during training camp.

Re: The O-Line has been inconistent going back to the last third of last season

The right side of the line has been horrid, Yates is bad, and it's magnifying the weaknesses in Kaczur's game. I was one of those who hoped the superbowl was an anomaly, but it's becoming more clear as this year wears on that there is a serious deficiency both in pass and run blocking...I used to chalk the lack of run blocking up to the athletic pass blocking line, but they're starting to look like dookie in both aspects of the game, and it isn't helping that the TE's just aren't giving us any help at all in the blocking game. I would at least hope for some gameplanning with some receivers coming back to crack back on run and pass plays just to knock a pass rusher or two (Porter?) off their game a little, or more RB chips coming out of the backfield...but we just don't seem to be incorporating the "keep them honest" plays of days past. Maybe it's an overreaction after this game, but it seemed this way in the Chiefs game as well...

:yeahthat::agree: That OL's been my pet peeve since last Feb and they've shown me no reason to change that outlook. Cassel's getting hassled, runners can't run...the inconsistency of our OL is affecting everything.

I won't pretend to know what to do about it lol, but our OL is a MAJOR weakness because they can't hold it together every week like they need to. We need that run game and our QB needs a little time. Ugh

I think we are also seeing how good Brady made that offensive line look, at times. He was quick at getting rid of the ball, and quick to move within the pocket, while avoiding pressure and sacks. On days when the OL is off, such as today, I think it's tough to not have Brady back there. The line did not look like a pro-bowl type line today. But yes, I agree that overall the line has been underwhelming so far this year, particularly today. There is not much time to throw.

Re: The O-Line has been inconistent going back to the last third of last season

With the top 20 pick (maybe top ten) we have coming, we'd better get an OT and put an end to the Kaczur era. How he's held onto this job so long, I have no idea.

I agree with everything that's been said. I think the biggest thing is the run blocking. With Cassel at the helm a run game is more important than ever. I've always told people (not on this board, but in my daily life) that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady make their OLs look better than they are because of quick releases and quicker reads, as well as Brady's ability to move in the pocket.

I want a run game the most though

You may have Bingo right there.

Calling this offensive Line "inconsistent" is an insult to inconsistency. Deese bums flat-out stink. They all should be embarassed to collect their next paycheck. They should've donated their SB check to charity, too.

You are correct, of course, in that the oL is dragging down the rest of the team with its inability to sustain drives by not executing its assignments, esp. on 3rd downs.

Ex-Bruins HC Pat Burns once said: If you can't score and won't hit, then what good are you?
I say: If you can't pass-block and won't run-block, then what good are you?

The answer is: Not any good, at all.

And add Yates to that mystery, too.

Our OL was covered up by Brady last year. Anything less than him and they are exposed. I think we are ok up the middle, its the tackles that suck, Light and Kaczur. The pocket always seems to collapse from the edges inward.

Light might do ok at RT, but he is no LT.

Cassel got killed today, if we keep this up we'll be on our 4th string QB by the end of the season.
