IR and the Cap

If a player goes on IR, does the team continue to pay him? And does it count against our cap.

Not too sound cold, but Tom is our most expensive player,

If he no longer counts against the cap that frees up a lot of cash to sign good players to longer contracts and lock up Cassel if he turns out to be good.

Even if Cassel is good, he's not a hall of famer. The best situation would probably be that Cassel has a good year and we get some draft picks or a corner for him in a trade. He may be pretty good, but he won't be Tom and tom isn't like Joe Montana or Favre where the best years are behind him. Tom still has 4 or 5 years of hall of fame play left assuming Pollard doesn't step onto the field against us again.

If I'm correct (which I may not be) the annual salary decreases a bit when a player gets injured which is why the signing bonuses are such a big deal to the players because the bonuses are guaranteed while the salaries aren't.

How long have you been following football? Yes, a player who is on Injured Reserve still gets paid and yes, it still counts against the cap. Its been that way ever since they instituted the Salary Cap. The only way it doesn't is if the team and the player reach an injury settlement. Then the player is released from the team and the settlement and whatever signing bonus the player received count against the cap.

The Patriots already had a bunch of money (nearly 6 million) to sign players to longer contracts and to lock-up Cassel beyond this year.

The only time the annual salary decreases is if there is a stipulation in the contract as such. Tom Brady's contract did not have such a stipulation.

Cassel is going to be a free agent. The Patriots aren't going to be in position to trade him:

No, but the Patriots can get a good 2010 draft pick if Cassel signs a large contract with another team. Or they can use Cassel signing with another team to offset them signing a good free agent.

I have been following football my whole life. But only recently (year or two) the minutia of salary caps, practice squads, the difference between RFA and URFA etc. Before that I just watched the game and rooted for team. Not really concerning my self with the details.
