Assuming you are right and they do play more zone than man I think there could be a lot of reasons.My follow up question would have been then why did you have him playing zone or man-off in goal-to-goal or inside the 20 situations early in the season? I'm sure that would have been answered with additional run support but I think a few of them came a few came on later downs with longer distances.
Run support as you suggest.
Or maybe the fact that it's a likely run play means it's a good time not to be in man so your not chasing the receiver needlessly like bb suggested.
If it's goal to go and no first down to be had play zone and flood the end zone and goal line.
