Whose roster spot does Jeff Demps take?

PUP?!? The guy just won a silver medal in the London Olympics. He's in better shape than anybody on the team.

"We made a move today and placed Jeff Demps on the PUP list. It is what it is. We just try to get better every day. We'll tell Jeff he's on the Physically Unable to Perform list when somebody catches up to him. We saw some good things out there today but we still have a lot of work to do. Blah, blah, blah......blah," said Bill Belichick.
Well played.

My thinking, however, is that BB would use something more along the lines of ..... "I have some bad news to report on this Olympian kid we just signed away from Rexy. It seems he forgot he wasn't running on a track and, during our conditioning test, he used his sprinting cleats instead of football cleats, slipped awkwardly on the grass and tweaked his hammy in the process. He's been placed on the PUP and we'll monitor his recuperation. I forewarn everyone however in advance. While this speedster is in great physical shape to run in the Olympics he's not near in shape to play ball so he'll be on the day to day program." Or something similar.

Please add Demps to the list of 100 Patriot offensive players that the geriatic,wheelchair-bound Jet's safeties aren't afraid of.......Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter....italia44:)

Now I love this signing, don't get me wrong, but some of this ball washing of Demps is just ******ing insane. Have any of you who are so ready to dump Woody in favor of this guy considered that he's over 5 months BEHIND everyone one else in getting prepared for a football season?! To all of you who want to immediately give him the 3rd down back position ever wonder if he is capable of blocking an NFL LB or DLman in protection. Do you even think there is even a slim possibility that over the next 12 days he can learn a complex offense that everyone else has be working on for the last 3 months,

GET A GRIP! Demps was signed to upgrade the KO return game. That's is within his short term capabilities. BTW- Just because Demps might take his KO return job on ST's, Woody also excelled in both Punt and KO coverage roles as well. His value to ST's might be diminished, but it didn't end.

I think it would be wise to at LEAST let this kid get to Foxboro and see if they can find a uniform small enough to fit him, before we anoint him the 2nd coming,. And lets see him have ONE run over 5 yds before we jettison a proven RB who has averaged that over the course of 2 full seasons and 174 carries.

Has anyone on this thread actually argued that Demps should take over Woodhead's role in the offense this season? Pretty sure that nobody's said that.

Seeing how he would be scooped up in a heartbeat by the Jets if we did release him I see him as sure thing to make the roster. So who is out now?

I am saying Woodhead based on Vereen being able to take 3rd down role and Demps being the primary kickoff returner now.

1. You have an undrafted rb taking the place of a key offensive player that knows the system.
2. You want to put this unproven player on the roster because you don't want the Jets to take him.

Don't you think a player will win a roster spot based on performance rather then a what "if the Jets" get him. If the Patriots cut Woodhead, wouldn't the Jets be in line to snap him up. Then, what if Woodhead does well and Demps bombs? Will your head explode?

Maybe he will take Slaters spot on the roster.

Slater may be fast, but if you chase him down an alley, he is bound to run right into
the first drunk he see's.

No I will be ok... I don't think either player is going to define the 2012 season..

Do you have anyone else you see being cut? Since you are so sure my suggestion of Woodhead is not realistic I assume you have several other suggestions for roster spots and cuts...?? You obviously just ran out of space to write you suggestions, right?

This is getting lots of attention. As hopefully Demps will be useful for the team.

Demps is as likely to make Slater expendable as he is to make Vince Wilfork expendable.

Given the lateness of his arrival on the scene, I think BB should stick Demps on PUP, and bring him along slowly, while keeping a current roster player in the mix a little longer.

And by sticking him on PUP, how on earth do we figure out what we've got? I expect him to see some action in preseason and a final roster decision will be made before the regular season.

If Demps is healthy and doesn't fit in, he will be cut so he can get work with another team. I doubt he's signing on the dotted line for a promise to get a shot to be on the PUP list.

Shane Vereen, Steven Ridley, Brandon Bolden as running backs and now the "track star" as a kick returner would be the reason Woodhead could be cut..

Brandon Merriweather took more snaps at safety then anyone else in 2009 and 2010.. Then got cut last year.. Ty Warren was our starting LDE for 5 years got cut last season... Shall I continue the list of player BB has cut despite there previous roles?

Never ceases to amaze me how Andy Johnson lives in the past. Why don't you sign up for a history forum....

Bill doesn't cut productive guys. Even Lawyer Milloy who was cut because he wasn't as productive as his salary or cap # warranted and he was a negative leader in the locker room to boot. Big Bang Clock was cut because he's uncoachable. Ty Warren was cut for the same reason as Milloy.

Woodhead is productive on offense and ST. He's only been a KO returner here recently by default. He plays on coverage units as well. Demps may not see the field this season other than as a returner IF he proves he can productively and reliably do just that. Woodhead can perform in the up tempo no huddle offense. We have no idea if any other RB on the roster can yet.

Never ceases to amaze me how kneejerk the mentality is here.

I am calm as can be.. I just don't like naysayers who just think they're owed respect based on 29K posts..

I don't own the threads you're right but let me be clear when I tell you to stay out of my way and not come at me again. The dog pissing territory crap might fly with other new members but I am not a weak link..

First, I wasn't naysaying.

Second, my post count is irrelevant, other than to show that I post frequently. I don't cite to it, so you probably shouldn't bother citing to it either, since it has no impact.

Third, I'll "come at you", as you put it, when I feel it's warranted. That's part of what this place is for.

Fourth, the one who decided to have a pissing contest was you, with the enormous print post that had no real purpose. Again, it should have been telling to you that I was not the only, or first, one to post about it.

Fifth, you have yourself a great night.

Bill Belichick can start by cutting the Three Stooges on the New England Patriots defense:

Barrett
Ihedigbo
Brown

wow I just realized Sergio Brown is still on the roster. Hopefully he bubbles the PS.

As for the future of Sergio Brown, his future employer will be McDonalds as in "Welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?"

Just go back to the fourth post of the thread with Sciz, who answered the question of who's spot does Demps takes with.

Probably Woodhead. He has presumably lost any chance that he had at the kick return job to Demps. Vereen has reportedly looked very good catching the ball. None of the RBs stick out in pass blocking. That leaves Woodhead as a backup 3rd down back and draw specialist, as far as I'm concerned.

That was just the first page. If you go further you will see more. At #18 The irrepressible BBass offers this "gem"

Shane Vereen, Steven Ridley, Brandon Bolden as running backs and now the "track star" as a kick returner would be the reason Woodhead could be cut..

I could go on, but there are currently 133 posts in this thread plus 2 separate threads of rampant stupidity on this subject including freakin' rumors from Incarcerated Bob  so I think I made my point.

LOVE the signing. HATE the stupid, unfounded, and illogical speculation.

I went back to update my 53-man to make room for Demps. Actually, it was pretty easy. Losing Fletcher really loosens things up in the front seven, especially since I'm willing to cut Scott. I also passed on Justin Francis, Brandon Bolden. But if those guys are binkies for you, you can choose Cole or Larsen or Branch or Brace.

Plenty of bubble players who we can cut without doing as much damage is releasing Woodhead.

QB (3) Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett
RB (5) Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead, Jeff Demps, Spencer Larsen
