Deion Sanders mentioned something that I was thinking about last night after the game. We had the ball for about 20 minutes, Greenbay killed us with the long drives and scores at the end. They managed the clock well, usually something the Pats are pretty good at. Even though we got beat at our own game(eating the clock with long drives) and in the 20 minutes that we did have possession, we were still able to put up 31 points.

Now I know Arrington had a pick-6. They still basically had the ball for about 40 minutes compared to us having the ball for about 20 minutes. You have to admit once Brady got on the field, you were like, "Jessshh been awhile since I've seen that guy". I've seen games where we lost the time of possession war but last night was really bad.

But my point is that this is still a good sign even though demonstrated in a very disoriented way. Even when Brady has a not so good game, the offense still basically does its job. I hated this game by all means but I think we can atleast take this from it. Thoughts? ...

The Patriots scored 31 points in 19 minutes 12 seconds having a "bad" night.

Time of possession is misleading in a game like this. We got 14 points (Pick 6 and quick TD after Connolly's rumble) taking no time off the clock. I'll take a crazy win over TOP any day! Just ask Green Bay!

In this game, TOP actually mattered. With the D Line so thin, the O's job it to keep them off the field as much as possible. Just the opposite happened. That, and the onside kick which took away one of Brady's possessions, and it was a mess.

Green Bay managed the clock well until when it mattered most, the last minute of the game. Thank God their rookie QB remembered he was a rookie at that moment. They used their last time out after letting about 10 unnecessary seconds run off the clock, and then they kept huddling up when they had no time outs, taking way too long to get their plays off. Then, I think the kid lost it when they needed to get a first down so he could spike the ball, and they had a 4th and 1, so he couldn't spike it. After playing so well, clock-wise, and keeping Brady off the field and out-of-rhythm, they lost it (literally and figuratively) in the last minute of the game (thank God!!). Go Pats!!

Give GB credit, they did a good job in keeping Brady off the field. Y'all will have to be prepared for all the mediots this week talking about how the 'blueprint' is in place now instead of just realizing the Packers were able to EXECUTE last night. Somehow the Packers and the 2007 Giants/Ravens are the only teams in the league who have 'figured out' you need to pressure Brady and cover the recievers tight. And keep him off the field by running the ball well and controlling the clock. The other 20+ teams we torched in both runs just didn't know that!

I hope we don't play like last night we if face the Ravens/Colts in the playoffs, and let hope all the D line are back in full health by then.

    No Jersey Selected

Luckily, some things fell the Pats way because of the lack of TOP. The thing that killed them was the onsides kickoff recovery that prevented TB12 from going out and producing a 6-8 minuted TD drive, along with Connolly's punt return that put the ball on the 4 yard line. I was getting worried for Big Vince between the way he was being shuffled around on the D-Line and the amount of time he had to play.

I couldn't understand for the life of me why GB let the 18-19 seconds tick down to the 2-minute warning when they were still 40 plus yards and needed a TD. I can understand not wanting to give Brady more time than he needs, but you still need to have the lead before you can worry about it. Bad clock management.

Reminds me of colts-fins monday night game last year. Colts only had the ball for 15 mins and won.

Not to mention we lost a possesion to an onside kick.

IMO I give a lot of credit to the defense yesterday. Despite being on the field for 40 minutes they played their best ball at the end with the game on the line. Sure they got a little exploited at points during the game but credit should go to Flynn and the Pack for staying patient and not trying to force to much they really dink and dunked their way and thier plan almost worked. Problem is when crunch time comes TB will score and dink and dunk didnt work in the end for them because they needed points fast and Flynn couldnt quite get it done.

The on side kick was huge for GB. This allowed GB to start both halves with the ball. Assuming the Pats recovered the on side kick, a 5 minute possession swings the TOP differential by 10 mins.

It had nothing to do with the long drives (or very little). It had to do with the fact that the Packers had about 4 more drives than the Patriots, because of the onside kick, the pick-6, and the Connoly kick return.

"Even when Brady has a not so good game, the offense still basically does its job"

Yeah, I don't know about that. The offense had 3 or 4 attempts in the 2nd half to put the game away, and went 3 and out.

And the defense held every time. The defnese had a tremendous 4th quarter.
The defense has not allowed a tying or go ahead 4th quarter score all season. Find me all of the other contenders that can say that.

Did someone say that the offense had a bad night or that the patriots were not able to score points?
    ==================
Look at the defense that couldn't get off the field and continued to have the worst 3rd down percentage in the league, the worst by far for a patriot team in the Belichick era. The defense couldn't stop the run and couldn't stop much on third down. What the defense can do is to create turnovers which make up for a lot of poor play on the majority of downs.

And it has shown the ability to keep the other team out of the end zone when the game is on the line. I do not think that is happenstance, I think it is as much a characteristic of a defense as how many yards they allow...and a more important one too.

I guess thats a good point too. offense sputtered on some drives but they found a way to put up the needed points to win the game. Defense did step up to when it counted.

But to have the ball for 19 minutes.... and still win is amazing in my eyes.

The defense/ST scored 14 points. The offense scored 17.

The Packers had 6 drives in the 2nd half. They scored a touchdown, a fg, punted twice, and turned it over twice.

The Patriots had the ball 4 times in the 2nd half. They scored a touchdown on one drive, a field goal on another. In the remaining two drives they gained a TOTAL of -5 yards on 6 plays, and used up 1:44 on the clock. They punted on 5/8 drives during the game. ( I don't count the 5 yard drive as a drive).

TOP, yards, 3rd down %, red zone...all trivia.

There is only one stat that really matters...in that stat NEP got 31, Greenbay 27.
