Some of you maybe were wrong about Corey last year?

I'm glad we had Corey Dillion on our team and I hope he does retire especially if thats what he wants to do. I certainly would not like to see him go to the Jets and we have to play against him twice a year as most of us know what is one of the Jets needs this offseason. I read a thread here earlier this month that the Jets are going to make quite a few moves that will upset some Pats fans or something to that and I do believe that will happen.

I guess you know more than any NFL reporter or Dillons agent as quoted today.....I guess if he was stating he is running for president in 2008 you would believe it too.

Players often change feelings when seasons end,I am sure he loves the guys in the locker room but he needs a team that will give him the ball 25 times a game,What he said last year IS LAST YEAR!

Did you ever have a girlfriend when you were younger and said 'I love you and want to be with you forever'...I did and never kept to that once she was gone',things change, days come and go,feelings come and go - leave the past.. Corey is not happy here anymore and wants a team better suited for 1 primary back thats the bottom line, get over it dude.

I'm confused.
Corey Dillon makes a definitive statement that he is retiring, explains his reasoning, which makes sense. Explains that he told teammates before the season this would probably be his last year. He explains how he personally feels about whether he is ready to retire.
his agent says he isn't going to retire.

How in the world can you imply someone who believes the man who is making the decision rather than the agent (who by the way makes nothing if the player retires and probably about 100,000 if he doesnt) is ignorant?

I will ask you the similar question to what you asked. If the agent said Corey dillon was running for President in 2008, I assume you would believe him?

im VERY confused

-Corey says he enjoyed playing here, enjoyed splitting carries and it was good for him

-Corey said hes retiring

-Corey says hes not retiring and wants to be released

-corey's agent says 8-10 touches doesnt show his ability he still has

so if hes not happy with 8-10 touches..how was splitting carries any good then if hes not happy?

w.e..i stand my by respect post and all that..i still respect his decision in ways. saving 4.5 million is a lot and i would of loved to see a restructure and come back but i guess its retiring or moving on

Dillon had 199 carries last year . He was coming off devastating injuries in 2005 and was glad not to carry the whole load last year.

If he feels good, he will be 2 years recovered from injuries next year.

Maroney will need to take over the load next year.

Corey will want to get more carries next year for his HOF bid, or

if he doesn't feel healthy, he will retire next year.

I imagine Dillon will make a decision based on how he feels. Wouldn't be the first time a player retired/stayed then changed his mind.

I can only imagine the creaks and groans a player like him experiences some mornings.

I wonder what is more important to hall of fame voters, tds or yards. Maybe he would have more yards somewhere else, but I seriously doubt he gets 13 TDs again in anywhere except New England.

The numbers don't add up. 8-10 touches? Um, he got 12.5 touches. That's 2.5 touches away from the goal stated by the agent, 15 touches.

Well, Corey, if you don't ask out of the game constantly, then I'm sure BB will find the extra 2 touches you need to fulfill your agent's requirements.

What am I missing here? People are screwing around with numbers.

But the man said he wants to retire.
Why would the words of an agent, of all people, be preceived as gospel and the conflicted words of the actual guy making the decision be dismissed out of hand as a lie?
I just don't get that.

Well the Pats aren't gonna release him for nothing. That we know to be true.

What's the big deal? Belichick felt that Corey's skills were

diminishing so he drafted a young running back with the

Pats' #1 pick. Now, the Pats don't think Corey is worth a 3 million

roster bonus on top of his 4.4 mil. salary so they have agreed to cut him.

Corey has been great for the Pats and I just love it when drops his shoulder and creams a would be tackler. I wish he'd renegotiate and stay here as a short yardage/TD specialist.

Instead, it seems he's listening to another whack job agent who's whsipering to Corey about all that extra cap space floating around the NFL this offseason and how so many teams yearn for a true power back to carry the load. That his agent is dellusional is hardly a surprise, greed infects the brain of nearly every one, but Corey has to be drinking some of his own 100 proof Kool-Aid to believe he's still got the juice to be a feature back. Ego truly is an all powerful force for some people.

Dillon cannot 'turn the corner' anymore at all, so he's limited to running up the middle which he still does at an acceptable level when he's sitting out every other play. Anyone watching the Pats this year saw Dillon wave at the sideline for a breather after almost every time he handled the ball - if Corey had been just a bit tougher (or one might even say, a bit more dedicated) he'd have had his 15 carries a game.

Corey's dreaming, in complete la-la land, if he has himself believing he's bound for a $5mil bonus on two years and a promise to be the workhorse, he just doesn't have the ability anymore. Of course, Al Davis has two houses in La-La Land...

He did. I think it depends on how he feels. This is only my thought, not fact, but there is that HOF thing and that might be something he's considering.

He's certainly not going to say he's considering cranking out another thousand yds. for his HOF resume, even Adam didn't say that.

He did leave the window open, ion the same article.

Asked if he would suit up for another team, Dillon said he was "going to leave the window open, but it's very slim.

Why not? He has little or no trade value. Like most good organizations, the Patriots try to help out players that have given their best.

This guy showed his true colors in the season opener against Oakland a few years back. He *****ed and moaned on the sideline and I got major heat for calling him out because Corey was a "changed man" in New England!

You'll be better off without him.

Because I'm assuming it could be a cap hit versus if he retires. I could be wrong tho.

Great post.

I think he liked playing for the patriots, and wanted to continue to. But he felt he could get a little more money and carries somewhere else, and there he could have a good two more years of production.

Cut his slow ass!

His "slow ass" was able to score "a ton" of Touchdowns for the Patriots every year during his time here. I am looking at the Patriots offense and I can't see who will replace the "slow ass" and his production of getting into the end zone. Perhaps you know something I don't.

I said this on another thread but since we keep adding new threads on the topic I'll say it again.

Corey Dillon is a proud man. He'd never admit it, particularly to the media - some of whom he felt dogged him waiting for trouble or poking their stick to see if they could rustle up some, from the day he was signed. He had an MVP season for us in 2004 and without him who knows if we get back to back championships. But he was a shell of that player in 2005 battling injuries, and not much more in 2006 splitting carries with his replacement. It was goal line back in 2007 or hang 'em up.

He told his teamates and the media off the record that he was done after the AFCC. Sometimes that's emotion talking when you are drained. But he likely doesn't feel like going through the grind of another season to be just a goal line back or $2.5M role player. Just like Flutie said - at some point it's not worth the pain if your not playing on Sunday. I think he was open and honest with Reiss, and then the idiot agent dove in because he wants to keep HIS options open for a 3% commission in a cap flush environment the likes of which we have never seen. I'm sure he believes his guy could get that fire back for a price, and that is why he is desperately re-spinning the situation - damage control lest other teams believe Corey is likely done and probably seriously considering just retiring. Agents are leeches. They seldom care about what a player really wants, beyond money, or what is in a players best interest.

Some other team may come up with an offer in excess of $2.5M (which is all Corey was going to see here had he stayed - the $4.4 is a cap estimate, not salary, and it apparently included part of the $3M option bonus he was never going to see after back to back lackluster seasons). And they may also stroke Corey's ample ego and tell him he does have plenty left in the tank and they want it. And that may seduce him into coming back. But he is done here. Because we don't need the player he would be here in 2007, whose heart isn't really in it playing for not enough money to make it worth his while. We need guys who are hungry and determined and as the saying goes, all in. Anything less is just a disappointment waiting to unfold. Which is why this FO will release him and move on, as the fan base should, without acrimony.
