Schefter: Pats sign Ty Warren to 5-year, $36M ($17.5M guaranteed) extension

Yeah Warren doesn't spin around like.

I mean Freeney's athletic and fast, and yes, he spins around (oh yeah, turning his back to the play in the process.) But no way is he 4m/year better, especially in a 2-gap scheme. Apples and oranges, but Freeney's a specialist. All the gap control is someone else when he's on a pass-rushing jihad, and meanwhile, he contributes the Colts' weakness against the run.

The Pats are smart enough to realize that if nobody gets in the way of a running play, it's a touchdown. If nobody gets in the way of a pass play, it's PROBABLY a TD... or, it's incomplete. That's simplistic... but basically, for most good teams, you pass if you have to, because a team has a good run D. You pass enough to keep the D honest, and pass more when you're playing from behind.

The Colts are weird about that, and have the best pure passer in NFL history. What else can they do? Problem is, the idea that defending the pass is the key to victory has obviously infected the defensive side of the Colts too.

Longwinded way to say, whether you're comparing to Samuel or Freeney, I say give me a solid front 7 every time. What we're putting in place is the best D-line in football, on at least a 3 year basis. High-profile playmaking corners? A luxury. 10 INTs is a big play, once every game and a half. Minding those gaps and making your share of the stops? Every down, baby, every down.

Great move - does everyone remember how we were all hoping they would take Jonathan Sullivan instead of Big Ty?

I really didn't expect this-- but I like it. The Patriots love their defensive linemen.

I knew this would happen. BB resigns the most valuable people to great money. Both sides found a #...it worked out. DL is the most important part of our team besides Brady...so getting him-Sey-Vince tied up together is what had to happen.

BTW...Asante must be a little angrier IMO. Even though he should realize...for right money...you too, can win another SB.

Well, well, well, it's turned out to be a great day! Congrats to the Pats and Ty. Warren played the best football of his career last season and is still on an upward curve with his dedication, work ethic, class, and loyalty. He is truly the type of player that epitomizes a New England Patriot.

Great move!!!

Re: PFT: Pats sign Warren to 5-year extension

Seems a tad inexpensive...and I'm LOVING IT! :rocker: Thank you Ty!

If the $36M is real money, this will cost us $11M per additional year. That is hardly inexpensive.

Still, I definitely thought that extending Ty was our top priority, and in BB I trust.

I just hope that the actual value of the deal is substantially lower than $36M.

Fellers,

Lastly, this sort of a deal is just as much a respect for being treated fairly and honestly by the management. Many a free agent has signed here for less because of the candid and honest example of the coach. He doesn't mince words, doesn't make promises he can't keep, and lays it out, square and up front with the player. Who wouldn't feel good about that?

Respects,

It also says that if you get an agent who is on the same plane, you can get a deal that works for all parties. McElroy negotiated Welker's FA deal and now Warrens extension. Obviously, he has no problem dealing with the Pats front office.

Danny Boy is right...the Patriots are total cheapskates. After all, they are saving a bundle by extending Warren now instead of letting him go to free agency or a contract year.

Hey Quigs...keep your load down...we all know that Krafty saved a ton by doing this now.

Myra must be smilin! 5th Ave...here we come!

WHOOOOHOOOO!!!!!

yes!

Ty was actually one of the few players that I wanted that year however I was picking him with the second pick of that round (which we traded). It was cool for the pats to actually draft a guy I had looked into and wanted. This is way cooler.

Also every keeps talking about how you need to lock vince up to...he is locked up, he can't go anywhere for 3 years. WE GOT ALL THESE GUYS FOR 3+ YEARS...WOOHOOOO

Good move by our Pats glad they took care of Ty Warren.

There's a pretty good analysis of the deal from Breer up on his blog:

http://news.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/

What I found interesting:

Breer is not including the fact that Warren's 2008 salary could have increased due to escalator clauses in his contract. Given that his 2007 salary was increased because of a reached escalator, it seems very likely that his 2008 salary would also have been increased.

Miguel,

Does this contract in any way "use" some of the extra room the Pats had left in their cap for this year? (ie by front loading some of the deal to count disproportionately this year instead of 2008 or 2009)?

Excellent! I was worrying about getting both Warren and Wilfork reupped... the fact that they'd re-sign Warren now makes me feel that its a priority and very possible to have them all back.

As I said on one of the Samuel threads awhile back, we can't view the Samuel situation in a vacuum... it is possible its a question of signing Samuel or not signing Wilfork or Warren long term.

If I have to choose one of the three to do without in the future - Samuel, Wilfork, or Warren - I'd do without Samuel every time. Warren and wilfork are much more critical to the success of the D

Bingo...I have said this many times. You cannot pay everybody and BB/SP know where to spread the wealth. Keeping this D'line together is huge and will pay dividends for many years now.

Also a good move for Tiny as he sees his money now and I would think that kind of security is very important. I would not be surprised one bit to see Vince follow right behind, possibly even this year but next year for sure. Given his health kick this year, that same security factor should loom large for VW as well.

As for Samuel, come on back, take your 7.9MM and we'll see you around the NFL - our priorities remain with our D'line & O'lines along with a certain still young QB.

Every team has the same amount of money - it;s how you use it that makes all the difference.

GREAT MOVE!!!!

Good news...It makes me happy.

Hey Dannyboy.....If you really want to know what makes Myra Kraft smile - it would be all of her hard work helping countless thousands of people less fortunate that all of us. Would you please take your mean spirited agenda somewhere else....nobody cares what you think.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Ty Warren to 3-year, $36M ($17.5M guaranteed) extension

Extremely intelligent & prescient move by the Pats, a la the Koppen extension.

Given the silly $$ thrown at interior lineman this offseason, Koppen would have got mad cash if they let him hit FA.

Ditto with Warren.

Every time I read about Warren in the national media this offseason they constantly refer to him as a future Pro-Bowler.

V. smart of NE to sign him up before has asks for the Pro Bowl money he would be getting on the open market in 09 (or whenever he was to come due).

Love LOve LOVe LOVE this signing!

In one aspect, this is a great move. It locks up a tremendous talent in Warren until he's into his 30's. However, in another, its a major change from their normal operations. Until now, they have refused to re-do a rookie deal if there was more than one year left on the deal. And, because its a change, you have to ask yourself what kind of reaction that is going to have with the players who the Pats forced to wait to redo their deals.

Re: Schefter: Pats sign Ty Warren to 3-year, $36M ($17.5M guaranteed) extension

I love this deal. Yes $10M+ a year is a lot in new money, but it is a shorter commitment. They'll be paying him top money when he's 28, 29, and 30 (the new years added). They will not be paying him when he's 31 or 32 based on his performance when he is 27. That is a great thing.

This also lets them take some of the cap hit now. Every other team looks for ways to push cap hits back while NE finds ways to take future hits now. The worst-case scenario is that they just push them back to where they would have normally hit. It's all about options and flexibility.

I'm happy for Warren. He is set for life now. He could have gotten a big contract when he hit free agency at 28, but the money will probably still be there when he's 31. In sports someone is always willing to pay you for what you've done rather than what you can be expected to do.
