PS, that might turn out to be THE move of the 07 offseason. Okay that and AD.

The national media will be saying exactly that in a year or two, mark my words.

Wow if those #s are right then Warren probably left a lot of money on the table. However, if the last 2 years of his old deal get ripped up, he probably makes it back that way.

Did we find a loophole in the new CBA or something, this offseason has been nuts!! :rocker:

This is very reasonable money given that the cap will keep going up in 2 years and Warren could surely get more at that time (even with the bump for 2 years left on original contract) considering his rapid improvment.

What this points out to me once again is how much the players, mostly, love playing in NE for Belichick and with the other players.

This move is great for the Pats and Warren...just simply wonderful.

With this extension, we'll have Seymour, Wilfork, and Warren together at least until the spring of 2010. Awesome. :woohoo:

Oh, I guess I'm a bit of a dip. I was under the impression this deal was a bit EXPENSIVE. You guys think it's below-market? Please expound, I'd love to be wrong.

Danny Boy is right...the Patriots are total cheapskates. After all, they are saving a bundle by extending Warren now instead of letting him go to free agency or a contract year.

By 2009, with potentially a Pro Bowl or two under his belt, he would have gotten truckloads of cash.

5 years, 5+ million/year - Adalius Thomas averaged 7 million on his deal. Yeh it's early with his rookie deal, but with Ty playing Pro Bowl level - a steal.

Is my math off - 36/5 = 7+ million/year not 5.

Fellers,

What this says to me is that these players understand that there is more here than just cash. There really are intangibles that go with any job, and football is no different.

Here, in New England, they have a top-tier franchise that consistently wins. Yes, they got knocked out by Indy, but they are always in the mix, always considered a threat to take it all. That means a lot to folks.

You think Ty Law might not be thinking about what he left here after his time with the Jets and Chiefs? The cash is nice, but his chances for the HOF took a nosedive after he left here. Even if his stats had dropped, he still would've had the residual effect of being with a winning franchise.

Ah well. This is a really smart move by the front office. Having thise 3 signed and onboard means less worries for the next year or two, means they can groom folks to take over down the pike, and lets them work on being an even more effective front 3, and that's a darned scary thought.

Lastly, this sort of a deal is just as much a respect for being treated fairly and honestly by the management. Many a free agent has signed here for less because of the candid and honest example of the coach. He doesn't mince words, doesn't make promises he can't keep, and lays it out, square and up front with the player. Who wouldn't feel good about that?

Respects,

I am just stoked!

Warren would have gotten more on the open market.

He took less then what free agency would have paid him. But he would have had to wait two years for that.

So he gets it two years earlier, and in the end if he stays healthy and performs at his current level, he probably has a second big payday left in his career.

So in the end he could very well make more money this way!

Either way this just made my night.

I think I might just go order a Warren Jersey!

Excellent! I was worrying about getting both Warren and Wilfork reupped... the fact that they'd re-sign Warren now makes me feel that its a priority and very possible to have them all back.

As I said on one of the Samuel threads awhile back, we can't view the Samuel situation in a vacuum... it is possible its a question of signing Samuel or not signing Wilfork or Warren long term.

If I have to choose one of the three to do without in the future - Samuel, Wilfork, or Warren - I'd do without Samuel every time. Warren and Wilforl are much more critical to the success of the D

Well, as PFnV mentioned, compare it to Freeney's deal.

Freeney's getting over $11 million a year, including $30 million in guarantees. Now he's a better player, but Warren very good for us in our system. Any way you look at it, we got a deal.

Outstanding point!

I'd love to keep Samuel. But if I am choosing two of the three you mentioned, I also keep Warren and Wilfork.

Hands down!

Beyond brilliant. I am happier today than I was about any other offseason event, including the draft and the free agent binge. I feel privileged that Ty Warren plays for my team and I thank the Krafts for having the generosity and foresight to sign such a quality human being, on and off the field, to a long term deal.

Think about it though, Warren didn't have much leverage as dominant as he was last year. If he doesn't wanna sign for the discount then he gets paid nothing (comparatively) for the next 2 years, then the Pats tag him the 3rd year and at that point hes pushing 30. Might as well get this deal now....

Awesome way to end a good day. So glad the Pats played this smart. They knew they'd definantly lose him if we even dared let talent like that hit the market. EXCELLENT MOVE!!

There's a pretty good analysis of the deal from Breer up on his blog:

http://news.bostonherald.com/blogs/patriots/

What I found interesting:

The numbers may seem a tad low for an elite defensive lineman. But here’s what needs to be looked at: Warren was due just $2.515 million over the next two years. What that means is that if the deal runs its course, Warren, in essence, is reaping $33.485 million for adding three years on to his contract.

If Freeney were a Patriot he would probably be an outside linebacker, so it is really hard to compare the two.

Freeney is one of the most dominating pass rushers I have seen, though he didn't look as good last season as the year before. He is a liability against the run.

I will give you Freeney is the better player, simply because his speed and pass rushing ability are so over the top.

But as a prototypical 3-4 end, I think Warren is the more well rounded player.

Either way when you average out the annual salary of the two (and I realize that probably isn't entirely acurate) what you have is
Freeney: 11 mil per year (some else posted this, I assume it is correct)
Warren: 7.2 Mil

I don't see Freeney being practically 4 mil a year better.
