People don't seem to remember how badly Brady and Cassel played in the preseason. It's stunning to judge Mallet off of that. Brady threw 4 interceptions in his last preseason game of 2001, and Cassel looked abysmal in his preseason games. Judging a QB by his preseason games is crazy.
Although it worked out ok for Cassell, generally speaking looking horrible in the pre-season is NOT a proven path to success
In fact I'd say looking horrible in pre-season and playing well in the real season is more than the exception than the rule
Like it or not, Mallett is not good enough to prevent Belichick from seeking to upgrade the backup position with a 2nd round pick
